Radiologic evaluations affecting surgical technique in ureteropelvic junction obstruction.

Ureteropelvic junction obstructions can be explored by radiographic methods including ultrasonography, intravenous pyelography, radionuclide scanning, magnetic resonance imaging and computerized tomography. The decision to operate on an ureteropelvic stricture is best given by the results of a radionuclide scan, which can demonstrate the obstruction. The operative technique is influenced by the presence of a polar artery, as this presence represents a danger when endopyelotomy is performed. The presence of a polar artery may be demonstrated by computerized tomography using helicoidal reconstru

Application of Nuclear Medicine Techniques in Musculoskeletal Infection: Current Trends and Future Prospects.

Nuclear medicine has become an indispensable discipline in the diagnosis and management of musculoskeletal infections. Radionuclide tests serve as a valuable diagnostic tool for patients suspected of having osteomyelitis, spondylodiscitis, or prosthetic joint infections. The choice of the most suitable imaging modality depends on various factors, including the affected area, potential extra osseous involvement, or the impact of previous bone/joint conditions. This review provides an update on the use of conventional radionuclide imaging tests and recent advancements in fusion imaging scans for…

[Perthes' disease in scintigraphy - early diagnosis, course and therapeutic consequences].

A four year study on radionuclide imaging in Perthes's disease is reported. The results reveal that radionuclide imaging facilitates the earliest diagnosis possible as well as the differentiation against other affections of the hip. In eleven cases (diagnoses ascertained by X-ray follow up or biopsy) the duration of the course of Perthes' disease was shortened and the ultimate outcome was improved because of the early onset of therapy. Follow up examinations with radionuclide imaging and quantification of uptake reveal the extent of revascularisation of the necrosis of the femoral head and the…

Targeted radionuclide-drug conjugates: Current status and perspectives.

Radionuclide drug conjugates (RDCs) are emerging molecular platforms for diagnostic imaging, targeted radionuclide therapy, and precision-oncology theranostics. Theranostic applications typically employ matched diagnostic and therapeutic radionuclides conjugated to the same or closely related targeting scaffolds. An RDC generally comprises a targeting ligand, a linker, a chelator, and a radionuclide, thereby enabling selective tumor targeting for either diagnostic imaging or targeted radiotherapy depending on the conjugated radionuclide. This review summarizes recent advances in RDC design, wi

Gamma scintigraphy in the delivery, biodistribution and targeting of therapeutic agents.

The established clinical role of radionuclide imaging includes the diagnosis and monitoring of a wide range of clinical conditions. The therapeutic use of radionuclides has centred on a relatively small number of pathological conditions, particularly within the field of oncology. More recently there has been growing interest in the use of radionuclide imaging in drug evaluation and research (RIDER). Studies have been undertaken in order to increase the understanding of the in in vivo behaviour of pharmaceutical dosage forms in addition to the in vivo behaviour of molecular and cellular anti-tu…

From Diagnosis to Therapy-PET Imaging for Pheochromocytomas and Paragangliomas.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Pheochromocytoma and paraganglioma (PPGLs) are neuroendocrine tumors with diverse clinical presentations. PPGLs can be sporadic but often are associated with various syndromes, which can have variable clinical presentations. A thorough workup is therefore critical for staging, treatment, and follow-up. Imaging is an essential part of the workup and diagnosis of PPGLs. RECENT FINDINGS: Improvements in cross-sectional imaging with radionuclides have increased specificity and sensitivity for identifying and treating PPGLs. Furthermore, a variety of targets on PPGLs has allowed

Increasing the accuracy of lung perfusion scintigraphy in children with bidirectional Glenn circulation.

BACKGROUND: In children who have undergone a bidirectional Glenn procedure without antegrade or additional pulmonary blood flow, we have often noted a discrepancy between apparent lung perfusion on scintigraphy and superior vena cava angiography when evaluating right and left pulmonary blood flow. We found a tendency for radionuclide, tracer 99mTc-MAA, when administered through a single upper extremity vein, to preferentially accumulate in the ipsilateral lung. OBJECTIVE: In the present study, we examined whether the ratio of right-to-left pulmonary flow varied when 99mTc-MAA was administered

Emergency radionuclide demonstration of Meckel's diverticulum in a patient with perforated ulcer and massive rectal bleedings.

A 10-month-old infant was treated for life-threatening rectal bleeding caused by a perforated ulcer in Meckel's diverticulum. Radionuclide imaging with 99mTc-pertechnetate was used to demonstrate the diverticulum preoperatively. Early intervention is desirable to avoid uncontrollable bleeding or complications such as perforation in cases of Meckel's diverticula. Routine 99mTc-pertechnetate imaging as recommended today requires prolonged fasting, and its use in emergency situations may be questioned. This case, however, illustrates the usefulness of radionuclide imaging on an emergency basis as…

Color Doppler ultrasound compared to a radionuclide scanning of spermatic cord torsion in a canine model.

High resolution color doppler ultrasound can simultaneously display blood flow superimposed on detailed gray scale anatomic images. Using a single-blind study design, nine adult male dogs underwent intravaginal spermatic cord torsion and subsequent evaluation with technetium 99M-pertechnetate radionuclide, and color doppler ultrasound imaging techniques. Torsions of 90 to 720 degrees were created surgically, followed by examination with each modality at one hour (four animals), and four hours (five animals) following the procedure. Testicular torsion was diagnosed if perfusion was absent or ma

Contrast venography vs. radionuclide venography: a study of discrepancies and their possible significance.

In 51 instances, patients underwent radionuclide venography with technetium 99m-labeled macroaggregated albumin followed by contrast venography. The criteria used for diagnosis of a positive radionuclide venogram (flow pattern and retention of radionuclide) were evaluated. Cases in which there were discrepancies between the two studies were analyzed. Multiple factors were found to result in a lack of correlation between the two studies. These are: failure to recognize nonfilling of the deep venous system on the radionuclide venogram, disparate distribution of the venographic imaging agents, pr

Postinfarction left ventricular pseudoaneurysm: echocardiographic diagnosis and prolonged survival in three patients.

Both echocardiography and radionuclide angiography have been proposed as noninvasive modalities for the diagnosis of left ventricular pseudoaneurysm. In the only three cases seen at our institution over the past five years, this diagnosis was missed with radionuclide blood pool imaging, while two-dimensional echocardiography demonstrated the typical features of a pseudoaneurysm. Our patients were asymptomatic and diagnosis was made incidentally 4 to 6 years after myocardial infarction. Although the patients survived an extended period without surgery, the reported incidence of rupture is high,

Evaluation of CSF leaks: high-resolution CT compared with contrast-enhanced CT and radionuclide cisternography.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Radiologic evaluation of CSF leaks is a diagnostic challenge that often involves multiple imaging studies with the associated expense and patient discomfort. We evaluated the use of screening noncontrast high-resolution CT in identifying the presence and site of CSF rhinorrhea and otorrhea and compared it with contrast-enhanced CT cisternography and radionuclide cisternography. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the imaging studies and medical records of all patients who were evaluated for CSF leak during a 7-year period. Forty-two patients with rhinorrhea and/or oto

Tellurium-118 as a novel radionuclide for long-term positron emission tomography.

Positron emission tomography (PET) is a powerful imaging modality that tracks positron-emitting radionuclides, enabling non-invasive and high-resolution visualization of biological targets and processes. However, conventional PET tracers possess short half-lives, which limits their utility for long-term pharmacokinetic studies of slow-clearing agents such as antibodies. To address this unmet need, we developed and evaluated tellurium-118 (118Te), a long-lived radionuclide (T₁/₂ = 6.0 days) that decays via electron capture to produce antimony-118 (118Sb), a short-lived positron emitter (T₁/₂ =

The spleen: diagnosis of splenic diseases using radiolabeled tracers.

The coupling of hematologic data with radionuclide studies of the spleen has provided information as to the functioning of the organ in a variety of disease states. The major radionuclide studies have been presented in terms of the type of information derivable and the various conditions that can result in fairly similar image presentations. By utilizing the imaging results in conjunction with other available data, a more coherent view emerges of the role of the spleen.

Parathyroid adenomas and hyperplasia. Dual radionuclide scintigraphy and bone densitometry studies.

Dual radionuclide imaging of the neck (Tc-99m pertechnetate and TI-201 thallous chloride) was performed in 22 patients with chemical evidence of hyperparathyroidism (elevated blood calcium and parathormone [PTH] levels). Of these, 19 of 22 had localization of a TI-201 "excess" area on radiothallium-radiotechnetium subtraction images. In 13 patients who have had operative confirmation at this writing, the dual radionuclide imaging was positive in 12 (12/13 = 92.3%). One patient had two parathyroid adenomas, both of which were seen on the images; thus, overall detection was 13 out of 14 or 92.8%…

Tc-99m diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid (DTPA)-human serum albumin (HSA) radionuclide lymphography for detecting the location of chyluria.

The cause of chyluria cannot be easily detected by CT scan or other imaging methods, except conventional lymphography, but Tc-99m diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid radionuclide lymphography clearly revealed the location of chyluria in the left renal pelvic area. Radionuclide lymphography is one of the choices in investigating chyluria due to its noninvasive and simple technique.
