Diseases Transmitted by Less Common House Pets.

Beside dogs and cats, the most common pets worldwide, an increasing number of pocket pets and exotic pets are making their way to more and more households, especially in North America and Europe. Although many of these animals make appropriate pets, they also can be a source of many zoonotic diseases, especially in young children and immunocompromised individuals. Some of these diseases can be life threatening, such as rabies, rat bite fever, and plague. Some others are quite common, because of the frequency of the pathogens harbored by these species, such as salmonellosis in reptiles and amph

[Investigation on the epidemiology of Far-East tick-borne spotted fever in the Northeastern area of China].

OBJECTIVE: To study the infection rate, epidemiological features of Far-East tick-borne spotted fever in the Northeastern area of China and to provide evidence for prevention and control. METHODS: Nine cities from the three Northeastern provinces were chosen. Human serum, rat, serum, free tick sample as well as blood from suspected patients were determined by indirect immuno-fluorescence assay. Rickettsiae was identified by guinea pigs plant method. RESULTS: The overall rate of infection among human beings was 17.46%, with R. heilongjiangensis antibody the major one among the nine cities. Th

Rare case of intracranial hemorrhage associated with seoul virus infection diagnosed by metagenomic next-generation sequencing.

BACKGROUND: Seoul virus (SEOV) is a Hantavirus and the causative pathogen of Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome (HFRS). Diagnosing SEOV infection is difficult because the clinical presentations are often undistinguishable from other viral or bacterial infections. In addition, diagnostic tools including serological and molecular assays are not readily available in the clinical settings. CASE REPORT: A 57-year-old male presented with fever and a sudden loss of consciousness in November 2019. Computed tomography (CT) scan showed subdural hematoma, subfalcine herniation, and brain infarction.

An Evaluation of Removal Trapping to Control Rodents Inside Homes in a Plague-Endemic Region of Rural Northwestern Uganda.

Rodents pose a significant threat to human health, particularly in rural subsistence farming communities in Africa, where rodents threaten food security and serve as reservoirs of human pathogens, including the agents of plague, leptospirosis, murine typhus, rat-bite fever, Lassa fever, salmonellosis, and campylobacteriosis. Our study focused on the plague-endemic West Nile region of Uganda, where a majority of residents live in Uganda government-defined poverty, rely on subsistence farming for a living, and frequently experience incursions of rodents into their homes. In this study, we show t…

Silent Carriers: The Role of Rodents in the Emergence of Zoonotic Bacterial Threats.

Rodents are recognized as significant reservoirs for a broad range of zoonotic pathogens, including bacteria, viruses, and parasites, many of which have substantial implications for human and animal health. The intensifying interaction between humans and rodent populations, fuelled by urbanization, climate change, and global trade, has amplified the risk of zoonotic disease transmission. This review compiles and examines current knowledge on key rodent-borne bacterial diseases, including leptospirosis, rat-bite fever, plague, salmonellosis, tularemia, Lyme disease, rickettsioses, Babesiosis, a…

[Rat bite disease with meningoencephalitic involvement].

Reported is the case of a 32 years old man, who developed a severe condition with recurrent fever episodes, lymphadenopathy, liver and spleen enlargement, and severe headaches 6 weeks after having been bitten by a rat. The headaches even increased during the further course. Psychological tests indicated an increased instability and irritability. The brain scan revealed diffuse cerebral ischemias (on the basis of an increased cerebrovascular resistance). Following the treatment with penicillin, the symptoms cleared almost completely. Although the pathogenic organism could not be identified, the

Streptobacillus felis, a member of the oropharynx microbiota of the Felidae, isolated from a tropical rusty-spotted cat.

Streptobacillus felis is a fastidious microorganism and a novel member of the potentially zoonotic bacteria causing rat bite fever. Since its description, this is the second isolation of S. felis in a diseased member of the Felidae. Interestingly, the strain from this study was isolated from a zoo held, rusty-spotted cat (Prionailurus rubiginosus), with pneumonia, thereby indicating a possible broader host range in feline species. A recent preliminary sampling of domestic cats (Felis silvestris forma catus) revealed that this microorganism is common in the oropharynx, suggesting that S. felis

PROLONGED MAINTENANCE OF SPIROCHETES AND FILTRABLE VIRUSES IN THE FROZEN STATE.

1. Observations are reported on the virulence of various types of spirochetes and filtrable viruses after storage at - 787deg;C. for periods up to 3 years. 2. Five specimens of Treponema pallidum belonging to 4 different strains, and 7 specimens of T. pertenue belonging to 5 different strains were tested after storage for approximately 3 years. With one exception each specimen contained actively motile treponemes, and all specimens were highly pathogenic for rabbits. Many other specimens of these spirochetes stored for shorter periods were also tested with similar results. 3. Relapsing fever s

Development of Rift valley fever encephalitis in rats is mediated by early infection of olfactory epithelium and neuroinvasion across the cribriform plate.

The zoonotic emerging Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) causes sporadic disease in livestock and humans throughout Africa and the Saudi Arabian peninsula. Infection of people with RVFV can occur through mosquito bite or mucosal exposure during butchering or milking of infected livestock. Disease typically presents as a self-limiting fever; however, in rare cases, hepatitis, encephalitis and ocular disease may occur. Recent studies have illuminated the neuropathogenic mechanisms of RVFV in a rat aerosol infection model. Neurological disease in rats is characterized by breakdown of the blood-brain

Multifocal pyogenic arthritis and osteomyelitis with bacteremia caused by Streptobacillus notomytis: A case report and comprehensive literature review.

Streptobacillus notomytis, recently recognized as a distinct species from Streptobacillus moniliformis-the primary causative agent of rat-bite fever-has been implicated in rare human infections. To date, there are no documented cases of femoral and tibial osteomyelitis attributable to this pathogen. Herein, we report a case of multifocal pyogenic arthritis and osteomyelitis involving the femur and tibia with bacteremia caused by S. notomytis, alongside a review of human infections associated with this organism. A 73-year-old woman initially presented with left knee pain at another hospital, wh…

Comparison of media with and without 'Panmede' for the isolation of Streptobacillus moniliformis from blood cultures and observations on the inhibitory effect of sodium polyanethol sulphonate.

Fastidious anaerobe broth and brain-heart infusion cysteine broth supplemented with 'Panmede' (a papain digest of ox liver) 2.5% supported the recovery of five Streptobacillus moniliformis strains from simulated blood cultures. Other media tested in parallel--brain heart infusion cysteine broth without 'Panmede' and Brewer's thioglycollate broth--were unreliable. Sodium polyanethol sulphonate (Liquoid) 0.05%, inhibited five isolates of S. moniliformis, including isolates from patients with Haverhill Fever. Occasionally, Liquoid 0.025% was also inhibitory and a heavy inoculum of one strain, NCT
