Prediction value of preoperative findings on meningioma grading using artificial neural network.

OBJECTIVES: Meningioma is the most common brain tumor in adults. Grade 1 meningiomas have excellent prognoses, but grades 2 and 3 usually have worse outcomes, higher recurrence rates, and higher mortality rates. Preoperative determination of tumor grade may be helpful in deciding the type of surgery and the rate of resection. Blood markers have been used to predict the rate of malignancy and prognosis of tumors in different regions, including the brain. The current study investigated the use of blood markers on predicting meningioma grade. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients with newly diagnosed m

Abnormal neural network connectivity in heart failure with reduced and mild-ranged ejection fraction patients: an independent component and dynamic functional network connectivity analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Heart failure (HF) is frequently accompanied by cognitive and affective impairments, yet the neural mechanisms underlying these comorbidities remain insufficiently understood. This study aimed to investigate alterations in static and dynamic functional connectivity (FC) within large-scale brain networks in patients with reduced (HFrEF) and mid-range (HFmrEF) ejection fraction. METHODS: Independent component analysis (ICA) was used to identify resting-state networks (RSNs) and FC disparities between HF patients and healthy controls (HCs) within the RSNs. The ICA, sliding window a

SpikeSEE: An energy-efficient dynamic scenes processing framework for retinal prostheses.

Intelligent and low-power retinal prostheses are highly demanded in this era, where wearable and implantable devices are used for numerous healthcare applications. In this paper, we propose an energy-efficient dynamic scenes processing framework (SpikeSEE) that combines a spike representation encoding technique and a bio-inspired spiking recurrent neural network (SRNN) model to achieve intelligent processing and extreme low-power computation for retinal prostheses. The spike representation encoding technique could interpret dynamic scenes with sparse spike trains, decreasing the data volume. T

Early life stress induces brain-wide electrical network predisposition to migraine.

BACKGROUND: Migraine is a disorder of severe, recurrent headaches and debilitating sensory, cognitive and affective symptoms, often triggered by stress. Early life stress in childhood has been shown to increase the likelihood of migraine in adulthood in humans. Calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) has been shown to reliably and acutely induce migraine or migraine-like behavior in both humans and rodent models. Here we investigate the impact of early life stress and CGRP on migraine-related neural circuitry in order to better understand the mechanisms by which early life stress predisposes ne

Visual working memory for real-world objects is resistant to visual but vulnerable to semantic interference.

Visual working memory has greater capacity for maintaining meaningful objects than simple stimuli. This has been attributed to real-world object representations' higher dimensionality protecting their visual features from interference by those of other objects. However, object meaning could simultaneously create new, semantic sources of interference, but this possibility remains untested. Here, we addressed this question by quantifying low-level and high-level item similarity of real-world objects using a recurrent neural network model, as well as quantifying semantic similarity based on human

Central Reading of Ulcerative Colitis Clinical Trial Videos Using Neural Networks.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Endoscopic disease activity scoring in ulcerative colitis (UC) is useful in clinical practice but done infrequently. It is required in clinical trials, where it is expensive and slow because human central readers are needed. A machine learning algorithm automating the process could elevate clinical care and facilitate clinical research. Prior work using single-institution databases and endoscopic still images has been promising. METHODS: Seven hundred and ninety-five full-length endoscopy videos were prospectively collected from a phase 2 trial of mirikizumab with 249 pat

Pathological neural and immune synapses in glioblastoma progression: mechanisms and therapeutic opportunities.

Glioblastoma (GBM), a high-grade glioma, is the most common primary brain tumor in adults, with a dismal prognosis and a very high recurrence rate. Major challenges to effective treatment arise from the tumor's locally aggressive, diffusely infiltrative nature and extensive intratumoral heterogeneity. Recent advances in cancer neuroscience have uncovered bidirectional neuron-glioma interactions including the formation of functional neuron-glioma synapses (NGS). Neuronal activity drives tumor growth and its synaptic integration into neural circuits; tumor-induced circuit remodeling reciprocally

Comparison of Ground Reaction Forces and Net Joint Moment Predictions: Skeletal Model Versus Artificial Neural Network-Based Approach.

Artificial neural networks (ANNs) are becoming a regular tool to support biomechanical methods, while physics-based models are widespread to understand the mechanics of body in motion. Thus, this study aimed to demonstrate the accuracy of recurrent ANN models compared with a physics-based approach in the task of predicting ground reaction forces and net lower limb joint moments during running. An inertial motion capture system and a force plate were used to collect running biomechanics data for training the ANN. Kinematic data from optical motion capture systems, sourced from publicly availabl

Bayesian Computation through Cortical Latent Dynamics.

Statistical regularities in the environment create prior beliefs that we rely on to optimize our behavior when sensory information is uncertain. Bayesian theory formalizes how prior beliefs can be leveraged and has had a major impact on models of perception, sensorimotor function, and cognition. However, it is not known how recurrent interactions among neurons mediate Bayesian integration. By using a time-interval reproduction task in monkeys, we found that prior statistics warp neural representations in the frontal cortex, allowing the mapping of sensory inputs to motor outputs to incorporate

Improved self adaptive differential evolution optimized BP neural network for short term entry passenger flow prediction in urban rail transit.

To address the issues of traditional BP neural networks being prone to local optima and exhibiting limited prediction accuracy in short-term station entry passenger flow prediction for urban rail transit, this study proposes an intelligent prediction method based on Improved Self-Adaptive Differential Evolution optimized BP Neural Network (ISADE-BPNN). First, the research object is defined as hourly station entry passenger flow, with analysis of its spatiotemporal characteristics and primary influencing factors. Second, a passenger flow data collection platform is constructed using Service-Ori

Metastable attractors explain the variable timing of stable behavioral action sequences.

The timing of self-initiated actions shows large variability even when they are executed in stable, well-learned sequences. Could this mix of reliability and stochasticity arise within the same neural circuit? We trained rats to perform a stereotyped sequence of self-initiated actions and recorded neural ensemble activity in secondary motor cortex (M2), which is known to reflect trial-by-trial action-timing fluctuations. Using hidden Markov models, we established a dictionary between activity patterns and actions. We then showed that metastable attractors, representing activity patterns with a

Reconstructing radial stem size changes of trees with machine learning.

Like many scientists, ecologists depend heavily on continuous uninterrupted data in order to understand better the object of their study. Although this might be straightforward to achieve under controlled laboratory conditions, the situation is easily complicated under field conditions where sensors and data transmission are affected by harsh weather, living organisms, changes in atmospheric conditions etc. This often results in parts of the data being corrupted or missing altogether. We propose the use of the most recent machine-learning techniques to reverse such data losses in multi-channel

Machine learning model with output correction: Towards reliable bradycardia detection in neonates.

Bradycardia is a commonly occurring condition in premature infants, often causing serious consequences and cardiovascular complications. Reliable and accurate detection of bradycardia events is pivotal for timely intervention and effective treatment. Excessive false alarms pose a critical problem in bradycardia event detection, eroding trust in machine learning (ML)-based clinical decision support tools designed for such detection. This could result in disregarding the algorithm's accurate recommendations and disrupting workflows, potentially compromising the quality of patient care. This arti

Transformational Clinical Matrix-Expanded: Metatheoretical Framework for Conceptualizing Dysfunctional Processes and Psychopathology.

Complex psychopathology, particularly when associated with adverse developmental experiences and complex trauma, involves multiple cognitive, affective, behavioral, interpersonal, and neurobiological processes that may be difficult to organize within single-theoretical or symptom-based models. The present paper introduces the Transformational Clinical Matrix-Expanded (TCM-XP), a transdiagnostic and metatheoretical framework developed to organize these processes within a developmental and integrative perspective. The TCM-XP comprises seven interrelated domains: Adverse and Dysfunctional Experie

Reservoir computing for system identification and model predictive control.

Model predictive control (MPC), widely used for real-time control of complex dynamical systems, operates by repeatedly solving an optimization problem over a receding time horizon. Its success hinges on dynamical models that are accurate yet efficient enough for rapid online computation. Frequently, the governing models of complex systems are either unknown or computationally inefficient, forcing MPC to rely on data-driven surrogate models. Echo state networks (ESNs), a class of recurrent neural networks trained through computationally efficient ridge regression, are well-suited for this role …

Study on the infrared dynamic evolution characteristics of different joint inclination phyllite under uniaxial compression.

The destructive behavior of rocks and the evolution behavior of cracks are highly correlated. With the continuous development process of crack, the stress state of rock is constantly broken until entirely failed, so it is necessary to study the spatial and temporal behavior characteristics of the crack in the process of rock destruction. In this paper, the destruction process of phyllite specimens is analyzed by thermal imaging technology, and the temperature evolution process of the crack is studied to explore the infrared characteristics of the crack evolution process. Furthermore, a model f

Automatic Detection of EEG Epileptiform Abnormalities in Traumatic Brain Injury using Deep Learning.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a sudden injury that causes damage to the brain. TBI can have wide-ranging physical, psychological, and cognitive effects. TBI outcomes include acute injuries, such as contusion or hematoma, as well as chronic sequelae that emerge days to years later, including cognitive decline and seizures. Some TBI patients develop posttraumatic epilepsy (PTE), or recurrent and unprovoked seizures following TBI. In recent years, significant efforts have been made to identify biomarkers of epileptogenesis, the process by which a normal brain becomes capable of generating seizu

Gait-based neurodegenerative disease classification using multimodal temporal-spectral representations and a dual-branch CNN.

Neurodegenerative diseases (NDDs) often cause gait impairments with overlapping motor symptoms, complicating multi-class discrimination. This study proposes a lightweight dual-branch convolutional neural network integrating recurrence plots and spectrogram representations of vertical ground reaction force signals to classify Parkinson's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Huntington's disease, and healthy controls. Evaluated on the Gait in NDDs Dataset comprising 64 subjects, the proposed framework achieved 96.15% accuracy, outperforming recurrence-based (94.19%) and spectrogram-based (95.
