Oculoplastic considerations for refractive procedures.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Refractive surgery is one of the most popular elective procedures performed in the world. Given that dry eye is a common complaint following keratorefractive surgery, evaluation, and treatment of periocular conditions that further predispose the patient to dry eye symptoms is an important part of the presurgical assessment. Periocular conditions and surgeries can also affect the ocular surface and keratometry, and should be addressed. For example, ptosis, orbital fat herniation, ectropion, and eyelid masses have been shown to induce corneal topography changes and astigmatism

Association Between Eosinophilic Esophagitis and Coded Ocular Diagnoses: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

Background: Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is a chronic immune-mediated disease that is increasingly recognized as a systemic inflammatory condition. Its potential association with subsequent coded ocular diagnoses has not been well characterized in large-scale longitudinal studies. Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study using the TriNetX Global Collaborative Network, which aggregates de-identified electronic health records from multiple international healthcare systems. Adults aged ≥18 years with at least two clinical encounters between 2005 and 2024 were included. Patients with E

Refractive Alterations in Marfan Syndrome: A Narrative Review.

Marfan syndrome (MFS) is a genetic disorder that affects the connective tissue in several systems, with ocular, cardiovascular, and skeletal system manifestations. Its ocular manifestations include ectopia lentis (EL), myopia, astigmatism, and corneal abnormalities. This review examines refractive alterations related to MFS such as EL, microspherophakia, lens coloboma, altered corneal biomechanics (flattening, thinning, and astigmatism), and myopia and their impact on visual acuity. The pathogenesis of these manifestations stems from mutations in the FBN1 gene (encoding fibrillin-1). Moreover,

Myopic anisometropia: ocular characteristics and aetiological considerations.

Anisometropia represents a unique example of ocular development, where the two eyes of an individual, with an identical genetic background and seemingly subject to identical environmental influences, can grow asymmetrically to produce significantly different refractive errors. This review provides an overview of the research examining myopic anisometropia, the ocular characteristics underlying the condition and the potential aetiological factors involved. Various mechanical factors are discussed, including corneal structure, intraocular pressure and forces generated during near work that may c

Average paraxial power of a lens and visual acuity.

To provide a solution for average paraxial lens power (ApP) of a lens. Orthogonal and oblique sections through a lens of power [Formula: see text] were reduced to a paraxial representation of lens power followed by integration. Visual acuity was measured using lenses of different powers (cylinders of - 1.0 and - 2.0D) and axes, mean spherical equivalent (MSE) of S + C/2, ApP and a toric correction, with the order of correction randomised. A digital screen at 6 m was used on which a Landolt C with crowding bars was displayed for 0.3 s before vanishing. The general equation for a symmetrical len

Development and Testing of a Compact Autorefractor Based on Double-Pass Imaging.

Autorefraction is an objective way to determine the refractive error of the eye, without the need for feedback by the patient or a well-educated practitioner. To make refractive measurements more accessible in the background of the growing prevalence of myopia, a compact autorefractor was built, containing only few optical components and relying on double-pass imaging and the physical properties of the point-spread function and digital image processing instead. A method was developed to analyze spherical defocus as well as the defocus and angle of astigmatism. The device was tested using calib

Simulated effect of corneal asphericity increase (Q-factor) as a refractive therapy for presbyopia.

PURPOSE: To determine the theoretical effect of an increase in the negative Q-factor (hyperprolateness) on the refractive state and its effect on presbyopia treatment. METHODS: Ray tracing software was used to simulate the Navarro eye model. To simulate refractive therapy, corneal Q-factor ranged from 0 to -1.50. Refractive state of the model eye was defined as the target vergence required to maximize retinal image quality according to several image quality metrics. The change of refractive state produced by pupil constriction from 6 to 2 mm was estimated. RESULTS: For 0 ≥ Q ≥ -0.6, spherica
