Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) isolated from chicken meat and giblets often produces staphylococcal enterotoxin B (SEB) in non-refrigerated raw chicken livers.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is responsible for several difficult-to-treat infections and staphylococcal food poisoning (SFP). This study was conducted to investigate the prevalence and enterotoxigenicity of MRSA in broiler chicken meat and giblets. A total of 5.5% (8/144) of the examined samples were contaminated with mecA positive/mecC negative MRSA, with staphylococcal counts of approximately 102 colony forming units (CFU)/g in breast, leg and gizzard samples and approximately 3.3 × 103 CFU/g in frozen liver samples. Most MRSA isolates (75%, 6/8) harboured the staphylo

Preservative effects of gelatin encapsulated cinnamaldehyde nano-emulsion on refrigerated grass carp flesh: Specific inhibition of proteolytic bacteria and enhanced quality maintenance during late storage period.

This study developed a gelatin-encapsulated cinnamaldehyde nano-emulsion (GCN), assessed its antibacterial activity against proteolytic bacteria, and explored its preserving effects on microbial, biochemical, and sensory quality of refrigerated grass carp. In bacteria-inoculated flesh models, GCN decreased the relative abundance of proteolytic Shewanella putrefaciens and exhibited a responsive demulsification behavior specifically in the presence of S. putrefaciens. In refrigerated grass carp flesh, GCN more efficiently suppressed the growth of total viable counts, retarded the increase of TCA

Carbon Dots From Farmed Fish Blood as Novel Preservatives: Antioxidant, Antimicrobial Activities, and Shelf Life Extension of Refrigerated Slices From Asian Seabass Without and With Prior Bleeding.

Fish blood, an underutilized fish-processing byproduct, can serve as a sustainable precursor for multifunctional carbon dots (CDs). However, CDs synthesis from fish blood and the use of CDs for food preservation have not been explored. CDs were synthesized from different fractions of Asian seabass blood, including whole blood (WB-CDs), plasma (PB-CDs), and blood cells (CB-CDs). Physicochemical, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and preservative properties were evaluated. All synthesized CDs exhibited nanoscale dimensions, with good dispersion and distinct morphology. All CDs possessed UV-shielding c

A predictive model that describes the effect of prolonged heating at 70 to 90 degrees C and subsequent incubation at refrigeration temperatures on growth from spores and toxigenesis by nonproteolytic Clostridium botulinum in the presence of lysozyme.

Refrigerated processed foods of extended durability such as cook-chill and sous-vide foods rely on a minimal heat treatment at 70 to 95 degrees C and then storage at a refrigeration temperature for safety and preservation. These foods are not sterile and are intended to have an extended shelf life, often up to 42 days. The principal microbiological hazard in foods of this type is growth of and toxin production by nonproteolytic Clostridium botulinum. Lysozyme has been shown to increase the measured heat resistance of nonproteolytic C. botulinum spores. However, the heat treatment guidelines fo

A Short Review on the Evolution of Magnetocaloric La(Fe,Si)13 and Its Fabrication through Melt Spinning.

Energy-efficient refrigeration technology needs to advance ineluctably due to rising energy consumption and diminishing fossil fuel and primitive hydrocarbon reserves. Further, the existing gas compression method releases huge amount of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) that deplete the ozone layer. This is a global concern, which demands an immediate remedial technology. As a potential solution to the problem of sustainability and a means of meeting the ever-increasing demand for energy, environmentally friendly and socially responsible renewable energy sources could serve as an ideal replacement fo

Thermal Analysis of Paraffin-Embedded Tissue Blocks for Anatomic Pathology Processes.

We analyze temperature dynamics in anatomic pathology samples to identify the most efficient refrigeration method and to predict the time available for optimal sectioning before sample heating, thus getting appropriate information for a correct diagnosis by anatomopathologists. A thermal finite element (FE) analysis was carried out with comsolmultiphysics to evaluate temperature variations in paraffin-embedded tissues, i.e., muscle, bone and fat, and the corresponding thermal stresses. Experiments with different tissues and thermocouple-based measurements allowed validating the FE simulations.
