Social support needs of bereaved parents and family members after perinatal loss: A qualitative study.

Perinatal loss is a profoundly distressing experience for many families. While family and friends are often primary sources of informal support for bereaved parents, they may find it challenging to provide the support parents need. This study explores the social support experiences of parents and family members navigating perinatal bereavement in Australia with their informal social networks, drawing on semi-structured interviews with 20 parents and 5 family members. Reflexive thematic analysis identified three themes, along with seven sub-themes reflecting how informal support was enacted, ne

Empowering digital public health: a study on the mechanisms by which the application of digital technology drives social entrepreneurial intentions in the health sector among university students.

Amidst the tide of the rapid development of digital public health, digital technology has become a core tool driving university students to address social pain points such as health inequality and engage in social innovation. Based on social innovation theory, this study constructs a multiple mediation model of "digital technology application--digital health practice literacy--psychological capital--social entrepreneurial intention," aiming to explore the internal capability and psychological transmission pathways through which digital technology empowerment influences university students' soc

Social skills interventions for the autism spectrum: essential ingredients and a model curriculum.

This article outlines the ingredients the authors feel are critical to making social skills interventions successful for children with autism spectrum disorders. The authors described basic principles for teaching social skills that capitalize on the strengths of such children, while specifically addressing their deficits. The authors applied these widely used principles to group social skills intervention. In particular, social skills groups for children with ASD need to break down complex social behaviors into concrete steps and rules that can be memorized and practiced in a variety of setti

Further Analysis of the Predictive Effects of a Free-Operant Competing Stimulus Assessment on Stereotypy.

We conducted five experiments to evaluate the predictive validity of a free-operant competing stimulus assessment (FOCSA). In Experiment 1, we showed that each participant's repetitive behavior persisted without social consequences. In Experiment 2, we used the FOCSA to identify high-preference, low-stereotypy (HP-LS) items for 11 participants and high-preference, high-stereotypy (HP-HS) items for nine participants. To validate the results of the FOCSAs (Experiment 3), we used a three-component multiple schedule to evaluate the immediate and subsequent effects of an HP-LS stimulus, an HP-HS st

[The untold suffering. Psychosocial consequences of tongue tumor].

It is evident from literature that is no clear picture of the psychosocial factors that play a role in the way patients with tongue neoplasms cope with their defects and their treatment. The most significant component of the impact of postoperative disfigurement and dysfunction appears within a social context where the drastic alteration in anatomic contour interrupts the visual impression ordinarily provided by the face in social interation. Physological, psychological, and social adaptation to postsurgical defects can indeed be facilitated with proper intervention. The deepest and initial su

Juvenile delinquents revisited. Adult criminal activity.

We examined the subsequent criminal activities of delinquent boys classified as having either socialized conduct disorder, undersocialized conduct disorder, aggressive type, or undersocialized conduct disorder, unaggressive type. A follow-up study of more than ten years revealed profound differences in the likelihood of criminal convictions or incarcerations between socialized and undersocialized delinquents. The socialized delinquents have less chance of being either convicted of a crime or being imprisoned. This difference supports the previous studies that demonstrated that these classifica

Perceived societal meritocratic climate and self-stigma among adolescents in conflict with the law: the mediating role of collective self-esteem and social disconnection.

INTRODUCTION: This research investigated the relationship between perceived meritocratic climate and self-stigma among adolescents in conflict with the law across two studies. METHODS: Study 1 (N = 322) employed a cross-sectional survey; Study 2 (N = 254) used an experimental manipulation of perceived (non)meritocratic climate. RESULTS: In Study 1, perceived meritocratic climate positively predicted self-stigma, and an exploratory serial mediation via collective self-esteem and social disconnection was observed. In Study 2, the serial mediation was not replicated; instead, the effect was med

The addict, abstinence, and the family.

The drug addict generally has an extremely difficult time terminating drug use and remaining abstinent. A partial explanation can be found in an investigation of the relative meaning of the drug for the addict within his social context rather than viewing the drug simply as a pharmacological agent. The idea that addiction is a social phenomenon within the addicts family suggests a relationship between the functioning of the families of addicts and their inability to tolerate abstinence. Because the abuse of heroin or barbiturates by one family member can result in "rewards" for all family memb

Neurobehavioral and reinforcing effects of pregabalin in mice.

Pregabalin misuse is increasing, but its psychostimulant and rewarding properties remain unclear, especially regarding sex differences and interactions with opioids. The objectives of this study are to investigate pregabalin's behavioral and neurochemical effects in male and female mice, including its impact on cognition, social interaction, reinforcement, and cross-sensitization with morphine. CD-1 mice received pregabalin (30-90 mg/kg, i.p.) acutely or for 5 days. Locomotor activity, Y-maze performance, social behavior, and conditioned place preference (CPP) were assessed. Brain monoamine le

Measures of behavioral function predict duration of video game play: Utilization of the Video Game Functional Assessment - Revised.

Background Internet gaming disorder (IGD) was introduced in the DSM-5 as a way of identifying and diagnosing problematic video game play. However, the use of the diagnosis is constrained, as it shares criteria with other addictive orders (e.g., pathological gambling). Aims Further work is required to better understand IGD. One potential avenue of investigation is IGD's relationship to the primary reinforcing behavioral functions. This study explores the relationship between duration of video game play and the reinforcing behavioral functions that may motivate or maintain video gaming. Methods

Temperament and school-aged children's coping abilities and responses to stress.

To measure children's temperament and coping abilities, we administered the Stress Impact Scale to sixty 9- to 12-year-old children. Trained observers also completed an observational rating scale of coping behavior, the Coping Inventory, for each of the participants. The Stress Response Scale and Middle Childhood Temperament Questionnaire were completed by the mothers of the participants. Results showed that activity level was most predictive of effective coping as observed in the school environment. Dimensions of temperament that were most closely associated with less difficult responses to s

The propensity for schedule-induced polydipsia is related to differences in conditioned avoidance behaviour and in defense reactions in a defeat test.

In line with previous research showing that animals predisposed to develop schedule-induced polydipsia when submitted to intermittent distribution of food show differential behavioural and neurochemical characteristics, the present experiments investigated the nature of defense reactions to aversive situations in rats that do or do not develop schedule-induced polydipsia. It was found that rats that engage in excessive drinking during intermittent feeding display more rapid active avoidance learning in a 2-way shuttle-box and show less freezing when confronted with an aggressive resident male

Infants' discrimination of moving and stationary objects.

An operant technique was used to train 10-wk.-old infants on a simultaneous discrimination task with a checkerboard cube and a bull's-eye sphere presented in a stationary form. Discrimination testing with the objects in motion and with the objects stationary indicated that infants are able to discriminate between simultaneously presented objects whether stationary or in motion. The results are contrasted to T. G. R. Bower's assessment of infants' utilization of features in perceiving moving objects.

Social learning pathways in the relation between parental chronic pain and daily pain severity and functional impairment in adolescents with functional abdominal pain.

Having a parent with chronic pain (CP) may confer greater risk of persistence of CP from childhood into young adulthood. Social learning, such as parental modeling and reinforcement, represents one plausible mechanism for the transmission of risk of CP from parents to offspring. Based on a 7-day pain diary in 154 pediatric patients with functional abdominal CP, we tested a model in which parental CP predicted adolescents' daily average CP severity and functional impairment (distal outcomes) via parental modeling of pain behaviors and parental reinforcement of adolescent's pain behaviors (media

Tuning in to real-time social interactions in macaques.

Movement synchronization between individuals has been implicated in reinforcing their cohesion. How might such interindividual motor entrainment be controlled by the social brain? The answer remains elusive owing largely to the lack of suitable animal models in which direct neural recordings are available. Here, we show that macaque monkeys exhibit social motor entrainment without human prompting. We found that repetitive arm movements for horizontal bar sliding were phase coherent between two monkeys. The nature of motor entrainment was specific to animal pairs, consistent across days, depend

Social media as an effective therapeutic tool for addressing obsessive-compulsive disorder: a case study.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a chronic but very treatable medical condition. Adhering to the therapy plan is considered one of the biggest challenges for OCD patients, especially when communities are insecure due to armed conflicts and political upheavals. This paper documents the results of using social media platforms (especially Facebook Messenger, which provides free internet access) to manage the symptoms of a young female with chronic OCD. The results suggest that social media can be a potentially effective therapeutic tool, mainly in situations where armed conflicts, displacem

The cultural construction of preterm birth in the United States.

This commentary explores four features of the cultural construction of pregnancy and childbirth in the United States: risk categorization as an aspect of reproductive governance, medicalization, intensive mothering with its implications for gender stratification, and the definition of personhood as beginning at conception. The cultural construction of preterm births (those that end before gestation is complete at about 37 weeks) is interwoven with beliefs about risk in pregnancy. Health risk categories overlap with socially stigmatized characteristics and behaviors, opening sub-groups of women

Relationship between schedule-induced polydipsia and amphetamine intravenous self-administration. Individual differences and role of experience.

It has been suggested that drug abuse belongs to a larger class of addictive behaviors, including smoking, eating or gambling, which are mediated by common processes. Since laboratory animals can be induced to develop drug self-administration as well as indulge in compulsive eating or drinking, the present experiments were designed to find out if the same animals were susceptible to both behaviors. Only certain rats develop amphetamine intravenous self-administration (SA), and this susceptibility can be predicted from their enhanced locomotor response in a novel environment. Furthermore, exces

Role of the pituitary-adrenal hormones in the acquisition of schedule-induced polydipsia.

Adrenalectomized female rats failed to develop schedule-induced polydipsia (SIP). Dexamethasone (DEX) injections failed to reinstate SIP in adrenalectomized rats. They did not prevent intact rats from acquiring SIP but interfered with subsequent expression of this behavior. In contrast, corticosterone, the rats' normally occurring glucocorticoid, fully restored the acquisition and subsequent expression of SIP in adrenalectomized rats. This strongly suggests that corticosterone plays an essential role in the normal acquisition and development of this behavior. Data are interpreted in the contex

Training preschool children to recruit natural communities of reinforcement.

Four normal and four deviant children aged four-to-six years were taught to judge the quality of their academic work in a preschool classroom, and to prompt or cue their teachers to comment about the quality of that work. When these skills did not generalize spontaneously to other teachers in concurrent natural situations, generalized responding was taught by the experimenter, in multiple-baseline design across subjects. This generalization programming enabled the children to contact a sometimes dormant, but readily available natural community of teacher praise and reinforcement, i.e., to recr
