Social media recruitment enhances participant diversity in dermatology clinical trial: findings from the SAFA trial.

Recruitment and retention of participants remain critical challenges in clinical trials, often requiring innovative approaches to ensure sufficient enrolment and sustained engagement. Social media advertising offers the potential to reach target populations quickly by leveraging demographic, geographic and interest-based targeting. This mixed-methods observational study evaluates participant experiences and the effectiveness of various recruitment routes within a trial of a treatment for acne. Demographic variables, including age, ethnicity, acne severity and acne duration, were stratified pri

Pilot Trial of Neuromuscular Stimulation in Human Subjects with Chronic Venous Disease.

INTRODUCTION: Neuromuscular stimulation (NMES) has been shown to improve peripheral blood flow in healthy people. We investigated the effect of bilateral leg NMES on the symptoms of chronic venous disease. METHODS: Forty subjects were recruited from four groups: healthy, superficial insufficiency, deep insufficiency, and deep obstruction. Haemodynamic venous measurements were taken from the right femoral vein with ultrasound, laser Doppler fluximetry from the left hand and foot. Devices were then worn for 4-6 hours per day, for 6 weeks. Haemodynamic measurements were repeated at week 6. Quali

Longitudinal Clinical Trial Recruitment and Retention Challenges in the Burn Population: Lessons Learned From a Trial Examining a Novel Intervention for Chronic Neuropathic Symptoms.

Long-term trials are key to understanding chronic symptoms such as pain and itch. However, challenges such as high attrition rates and poor recruitment are common when conducting research. The aim of this work was to explore these issues within a long-term randomized control trial using transcranial direct current stimulation to treat pain and itch. This parallel double blinded, placebo-controlled randomized trial was comprised of 15 transcranial direct current stimulation visits and 7 follow-up visits. Participants were over the age of 18, had a burn injury that occurred at least 3 weeks befo

Brief Report: Safety of Frequent Blood Sampling in Research Participants in an Acute HIV Infection Cohort in Thailand.

INTRODUCTION: Anemia is a potential adverse effect of phlebotomy during participation in research. Clinical studies of acute HIV infection (AHI) require frequent phlebotomy to maximize scientific yield, but this participant population may also be at increased risk for anemia and other adverse events. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to describe baseline and longitudinal hemoglobin changes among participants with AHI. METHODS: Participants with AHI (n = 202) were enrolled in a prospective cohort study in Thailand. AHI was diagnosed using pooled nucleic acid testing and sequential HI

Richard Pearson Strong and the iatrogenic plague disaster in Bilibid Prison, Manila, 1906.

In November 1906, Richard Pearson Strong, then head of the Philippine Biological Laboratory, inoculated 24 men--inmates of Manila's Bilibid Prison--with a cholera vaccine that somehow had been contaminated with plague organisms; 13 men died. The governor-general of the Philippines appointed a general committee to investigate the affair, and the U.S. Senate demanded information about the episode. Although the Senate, the secretary of war, and even the president were kept informed of developments, no mainland investigations ensued. The general committee concluded that Strong was negligent for no

Developing an index to measure the voluntariness of consent to research.

The goals of the current study were to expand the content domain and further validate the Coercion Assessment Scale (CAS), a measure of perceived coercion for criminally involved substance abusers being recruited into research. Unlike the few existing measures of this construct, the CAS identifies specific external sources of pressure that may influence one's decision to participate. In Phase 1, we conducted focus groups with criminal justice clients and stakeholders to expand the instrument by identifying additional sources of pressure. In Phase 2, we evaluated the expanded measure (i.e., end

Female survivors of child sexual abuse: finding voice through research participation.

It is unclear whether survivors of trauma are at risk of emotional or psychological distress when they participate in research because there is little data on the subjective experience of research study participants and how they make meaning from their participation in research. This qualitative descriptive study explored the experience of research participation by survivors of childhood sexual abuse. We interviewed 12 female survivors and identified themes. Participants noted both positive personal and societal benefits of study participation and reported no harm due to their research partici

Using Participatory Methods to Develop the Prediabetes-Related Stress Scale (PRSS).

BackgroundPrediabetes is a risk factor for type 2 diabetes. The transition from prediabetes to type 2 diabetes is inequitable, with Latinos reporting an increased risk than other groups. Stress can affect this transition; however, we have no means of measuring prediabetes-related stress.Research Design and Study SampleWe used group concept-mapping, a participatory mixed-methods approach to collect data from English- and Spanish-speaking Latino adults (18+ years old) living with prediabetes, or clinical providers, in the United States. Participants were invited to multiple activities. First, br

Participant motivation typologies as correlates of study participation and retention in randomized controlled trials targeting cognitive aging through computerized cognitive training.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Participants' motivations may explain why they participate in Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) research. Drawing on the Activator, Motivator, Outside mediator, Re-enforcer (AMOR) model of research engagement, this article utilized a mixed methods design to (a) explore participants' reasons for participating and, in some cases, withdrawing from computerized cognitive training studies and (b) connect these reasons to study retention. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Our convenience sample included community-dwelling adults (N = 423) between 55 and 88 years

Age-Specific Barriers and Facilitators to Research Participation Amongst African Americans in Observational Studies of Memory and Aging.

BACKGROUND: Black/African Americans experience a high burden of Alzheimer disease and related dementias yet are critically underrepresented in corresponding research. Understanding barriers and facilitators to research participation among younger and older African Americans is necessary to inform age-specific strategies to promote equity in studies of early- and late-onset neurodegenerative diseases. STUDY DESIGN: Survey respondents (n = 240) rated barriers and facilitators of research participation. Age-specific differences were evaluated using nonparametric Kruskal-Wallis tests across respo

Non-participation and adjustment for bias in case-control studies of periodontitis.

Periodontal researchers frequently use case-control studies, but information on participation rates and the reasons for participation are often missing in the publications, thus hindering the assessment of the validity of those studies. A nested case-control study based on a well-defined population was used to (i) describe the patterns of participation; (ii) show how some associations can be biased; and (iii) illustrate how inverse probability weights can be applied to reduce bias. Differential subject participation was quantified using the ratio between participation for each level and the ov

Identifying underrepresented groups in oncology clinical trials using routinely collected data in an English academic trial setting.

BACKGROUND: To facilitate equitable access to novel treatments, cancer trial participants should represent as far as possible those that will receive the treatment in practice. We can identify groups who rarely participate in cancer trials by collecting demographic data from participants. In the UK, there is no standardised practice around demographic data capture, leading to inconsistent collection across trials. A lack of systematically collected and published quantitative data from participants in UK cancer trials may limit our ability to identify underrepresented groups. METHODS: We revie

Motivators and barriers to Latinas' participation in clinical trials: the role of contextual factors.

OBJECTIVE: Latinas are underrepresented in clinical trials despite the rise in Hispanic population. This study examines the factors associated with Latinas' willingness to participate in preventive breast cancer randomized clinical trials (RCTs). METHODS: Women self-identifying as Latina, over age 40, with no prior history of breast cancer were eligible. Using the Behavior Model for Vulnerable Populations, we administered a survey (n=168) to assess predisposing (e.g., knowledge), enabling (e.g., trust) and need factors (e.g., risk perception). Intention to participate was defined using a leni

Participant responses to retrospective surveys of child maltreatment: does mode of assessment matter?

This study examines the impact that different methods of assessing child maltreatment history may have on adult participants. A total of 334 female undergraduate students were randomly assigned to complete a retrospective measure of child sexual and physical abuse in one of three conditions: paper-and-pencil questionnaire, face-to-face interview, or computer-administered survey. Disclosure rates of abuse, psychological distress and mood change, preferences for assessment format, and perceptions of confidentiality were examined across the three assessment formats. Although disclosure did not va
