Paradoxical Vocal Fold Movement Disorder is where the larynx exhibits paradoxical vocal cords closure during respiration, creating partial airway obstruction. Causes of vocal fold movement disorder are multifactorial, and patients describe tightness of throat, difficulty getting air in, have stridor, and do not respond to inhalers. We propose using transnasal laryngoscopy examination, which will show narrowing of vocal cords on inspiration, and The Pittsburgh Vocal Cord Dysfunction Index with a cutoff score of ≥4 to distinguish vocal fold movement disorder from asthma and other causes of strid

A model of the chemoreceptor mediated control of breathing is analysed. Hypoxia is simulated as low equilibrium arterial oxygen both at altitude and at sea level. Conditions for stable and unstable equilibria are examined. Transition to instability leads to periodic breathing and the model predicts that this can cause arterial oxygen to oscillate asymmetrically about the equilibrium in some cases, causing the average to rise. Periodic forcing functions have been applied to cerebral blood flow with the same effect on arterial oxygen. Such asymmetric oscillations leading to enhanced oxygenation

Analysis of mitochondrial function has broad applicability in many research specialties. Neurodegenerative disorders such as chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) often exhibit damaged mitochondria or reduced mitochondrial respiratory capacity. Isolation of intact mitochondria for protein analysis or respiration measurements has been previously reported in numerous model organisms. Here, we describe an adaptation of previous protocols to isolate intact functional mitochondria from Drosophila melanogaster for use in a model of CIPN. Whole Drosophila are ground in isolation buffer, a

Respiratory activity is an important vital sign of life that can indicate health status. Diseases such as bronchitis, emphysema, pneumonia and coronavirus cause respiratory disorders that affect the respiratory systems. Typically, the diagnosis of these diseases is facilitated by pulmonary auscultation using a stethoscope. We present a new attempt to develop a lightweight, comprehensive wearable sensor system to monitor respiration using a multi-sensor approach. We employed new wearable sensor technology using a novel integration of acoustics and biopotentials to monitor various vital signs on

Aging triggers several abnormalities in muscle glycolytic fibers including increased proteolysis, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and apoptosis. Since the mitochondria are the main site of substrate oxidation, ROS production and programmed cell death, we tried to know whether the cellular disorders encountered in sarcopenia are due to abnormal mitochondrial functioning. Gastrocnemius mitochondria were extracted from adult (6 months) and aged (21 months) male Wistar rats. Respiration parameters, opening of the permeability transition pore and ROS production, with either glutamate (amin

A Pressure Bed Sensor (PBS) can offer an unobtrusive method for sleep monitoring. This study focuses on the detection of the sleep related breathing disorders using a PBS in comparison to the methods used in a sleep laboratory. A newly developed PCA modeling approach for the eight sensor signals of the PBS is evaluated using the Reduced Respiratory Amplitude Index (RRAI) as a central measure. The method computes the respiration amplitude with the Hilbert transform, and then detects the events based on a 20% amplitude reduction from the baseline signal. A similar calculation was used for the sl

Sleep-related breathing disorder or sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) encompasses central sleep apnea (CSA), obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), and sleep-related hypoventilation or hypoxemic syndromes. SDB is common in neurologic conditions that affect the central and/or peripheral nervous systems. Patients with neurologic conditions are at risk for SDB due to a combination of factors such as muscular weakness, damage to areas of the brain that control respiration, use of sedating medications, and weight gain from limited physical activity. This article discusses recognition and treatment of SDB as

A syndrome of disordered hypothalamic function with abnormal control of temperature, appetite, and thirst, hyperprolactinaemia, and inappropriate vasopressin release is described in a 13-year-old boy who, in addition, had insensitivity to pain and a more general disorder affecting mood, sleep, and control of respiration. A disturbance of the opioid peptide system is postulated. Naloxone reversed central analgesia, altered urine fluid and electrolyte excretion, modified the hormonal response to gonadotrophin-releasing and thyrotrophin-releasing hormones, and improved the auditory and visual rea

Motor neurone disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder leading to severe disability and death. It is clinically characterised by mixed upper and lower motor neurone involvement affecting bulbar, limb, and respiratory musculature. Recent guidelines have established diagnostic criteria and defined management of the condition. In a proportion of familial amyotrophic lateral sclerosis there is a mutation in the gene encoding the enzyme copper/zinc superoxide dismutase 1; this has allowed mutation screening and generated considerable laboratory based research. The diagnosis must be given

Obstructive sleep apnoea is a highly prevalent but under-diagnosed disorder. The gold standard for diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnoea is inpatient polysomnography. This is resource intensive and inconvenient for the patient, and the development of ambulatory diagnostic modalities has been identified as a key research priority. SleepMinder (BiancaMed, NovaUCD, Ireland) is a novel, non-contact, bedside sensor, which uses radio-waves to measure respiration and movement. Previous studies have shown it to be effective in measuring sleep and respiration. We sought to assess its utility in the dia
