Suppression of bulboreticular unit responses to noxious stimuli by analgesic mesencephalic stimulation.

The responses of 302 neurons in the medial medullary reticular formation (MRF) to a variety of noxious and innocuous somatic stimuli were studied in anesthetized and awake rats. In addition, the effects of analgesic electrical stimulation in the mesencephalon (MES) on unit responses were examined. Tail shock was the most effective stimulus, exciting more than 80% of all units recorded. This stimulus was considered separately during data analysis, since it could not be classified as noxious or innocuous. Noxious somatic stimuli (including pinch, firm pressure, pin prick, and radiant heating of …

The one-and-a-half syndrome--a unilateral disorder of the pontine tegmentum: a study of 20 cases and review of the literature.

The one-and-a-half syndrome is a clinical disorder of extraocular movements characterized by a conjugate horizontal gaze palsy in one direction plus an internuclear ophthalmoplegia in the other. The syndrome is usually due to a single unilateral lesion of the paramedian pontine reticular formation or the abducens nucleus on one side (causing the conjugate gaze palsy), with interruption of internuclear fibers of the ipsilateral medial longitudinal fasciculus after it has crossed the midline from its site of origin in the contralateral abducens nucleus (causing failure of adduction of the ipsila…

Efferent connections of the habenular nuclei in the rat.

The efferent connections of the medial (MHb) and lateral (LHb) habenular nuclei in the rat were demonstrated autoradiographically following … nto paramedian midbrain regions including median and dorsal raphe nuclei, and to adjacent tegmental reticular formation. Sparse addition LHb projections pass to the pretectal area, superior colliculus, nucleus reticularis tegmenti pontis, parabrachial nuclei and locus coeruleus. No LHb projections appear to involve the interpeduncular nucleus. All of these connection …

[Sites of seizure discharges after intracerebroventricular injection of anisodamine and the antagonism by diazepam in rabbits].

Anisodamine is a tropine alkaloid isolated from Scopolia tangutica Maxim. To determine the original sites of anisodamine seizure discharge, … urface-positive spikes. Multiple spikes then appeared in the hippocampus, caudate nucleus, midbrain reticular formation and frontal cortex. Diazepam 1.5-2.5 mg/kg did not inhibit the spike discharges from the amygdala, but did inhibit the discharges from other sites as well as clonic convulsions. When the dosage of diazepam was increased to 4.5 mg/kg, the spike disch …

Brainstem microstimulation activates sympathetic fibers in pudendal nerve motor branch.

A bilateral spino-bulbo-spinal circuit conveys information from/to the male urogenital tract and perineal muscles. This is the first electrophysiological report of another descending pathway, one which conveys output from the medullary reticular formation (MRF) to activate postganglionic sympathetic fibers contained within the motor branch of the pudendal nerve (PudM). In anesthetized rats, long latency (> 150 ms) discharges were elicited in the PudM following ipsilateral or contralateral microstimulation of the MRF. These firing bursts were not observed in rats after sectioning the lower lumb…

Nuclear localization of aldosterone in rat brain cells assessed by autoradiography.

Autoradiographic studies with 3H aldosterone demonstrate nuclear concentration of hormone in neurons of the hippocampus, septum, allocortical regions and brain stem reticular formation and motor nuclei of cranial nerves and in the meninges. The results suggest that mineralocorticoids have wide ranging effects on different parts of the central nervous system.

Wernekink Commissure Syndrome: A Rare Cause of Bilateral Cerebellar Syndrome.

PURPOSE: Focal signs are a big deal in neurology and are among the most important clues leading to diagnosis and localization. Wernekink commissure syndrome is due to lesions in the caudal paramedian midbrain involving the entire decussation of the superior cerebellar peduncles, resulting in the clinical hallmark of a bilateral cerebellar syndrome. CASE REPORT: A 79-year-old man presented with sudden, severe unsteadiness associated with slurring of speech, binocular double vision, and bilateral hand tremor. Examination showed right INO, moderately severe dysarthria, bilateral dysmetria and dy

The cholinergic system-dependent myoclonus of the baboon Papio papio is a reticular reflex myoclonus.

Neurophysiological studies were performed on four Papio papio baboons presenting with nonepileptic myoclonus (a startle response resembling stimulus-sensitive jerk). Investigations of the EEG, back-averaged EEG, and somatosensory evoked potentials revealed the absence of cortical correlates preceding the jerks, and exclusion of cerebral cortex involvement. No long-latency reflexes could be recorded in these animals. The jerks were symmetric when evoked by unilateral stimulation in normal baboons as well as in a split-brain animal. Polymyographic records showed that the first muscle involved du

The role of the specific and nonspecific afferent systems in the mechanism of changes in evoked cortical responses in the presence of vibration.

The interrelationship of the activity of specific and nonspecific afferent systems in the mechanism of changes in the electrical activity of the cortex under the influence of vibration was studied under chronic experimental conditions. The character of the postvibrational shifts in the vestibulo- and reticulocortical evoked responses in the presence of the isolated and combined disengagement of the specific (vestibular) and nonspecific afferent systems of the brain was investigated. It was established that vestibular afferentation plays a significant role in the mechanism of postvibrational sh

Neurochemically dissimilar anxiolytic drugs have common effects on hippocampal rhythmic slow activity.

Previous experiments have shown that anxiolytic drugs reduce the frequency of hippocampal rhythmic slow activity, induced by high frequency stimulation of the reticular formation and flatten the function relating threshold septal stimulation to the frequency of driven rhythmic slow activity. All of the drugs involved are known to augment GABAergic transmission. The present experiments investigated the effects of the novel anxiolytic compound buspirone which, unlike conventional anxiolytics, does not interact with GABA, yet is a clinically effective anxiolytic. Buspirone (0.156-40 mg/kg, i.p.) …

The rostral mesencephalon in Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease.

The rostal mesencephalon at the level of the posterior commissure was studied by light microscopy in two patients with idiopathic Parkinson's disease, one patient with Alzheimer's disease, and one patient with senile dementia of Alzheimer's type. In the Parkinsonian cases, the rostral part of the nucleus of Edinger Westphal disclosed Lewy bodies in 3% of the neurons, neurofibrillary degeneration in 2% of the neurons, and a 54% neuronal loss. In Alzheimer's disease, 2% of Edinger Westphal neurons contained neurofibrillary degeneration, whereas in senile dementia of Alzheimer's type only rare ne

The neurobiology of the narcoleptic syndrome.

Relevant electroencephalographic, psychopharmacologic, and genetic research reports are described in support of a neurobiological explanation of the narcoleptic syndrome. Despite increased support in this realm, no single neurobiological theory has won unanimous approval among sleep researchers, which has led toward speculation that the condition may be heterogeneous in nature. A multifactorial perspective, including psychological as well as neurobiological influences, appears to be the most productive model for research. Future investigation of sleep disorders utilizing such a model may enhan

Responses of medullary reticulospinal and other reticular neurons to somatosensory and brainstem stimulation in anesthetized or freely-moving ovariectomized rats with or without estrogen treatment.

The medical medullary reticular formation (mMRF) is probably involved in controlling lordosis, a feminine mating reflex which requires both estrogen priming and appropriate somatosensory input(s). We have recorded single-unit activity of antidromically identified reticulospinal (RS) and unidentified (UI) neurons in mMRF of ovariectomized rats with or without estrogen treatment to investigate neurohormonal mechanisms regulating lordosis. The units were recorded in both acute and chronic preparations, the latter involving implanted "floating" wire electrodes to allow the influence of estrogen on…
