[Central retinal vein occlusion as the first symptom of ovarian cancer].

CASE REPORT: A healthy 57-year-old woman presented with decreased vision in her right eye. Dilated fundus examination revealed central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO). The laboratory test results for hypercoagulability state showed an abnormal protein S. A few months later she developed an ovarian malignancy. DISCUSSION: This case illustrates an association between CRVO and ovarian tumour. Coagulation disorders in cancer may be a mechanism for CRVO.

Development of central retinal vein occlusion in dural carotid-cavernous fistula.

We investigated a 46-year-old woman with central retinal vein occlusion complicating dural carotid-cavernous fistula, resulting in severe loss of visual acuity. Venous stasis retinopathy observed on the first examination progressed severely so that central retinal vein occlusion with retinal neovascularization developed 3 months later. A transvascular embolization discontinuing the feeders from the external carotid artery improved the retinal circulation and the visual acuity. These results indicate that the cause of the progression from venous stasis retinopathy to central retinal vein occlus…

Quality of Life in Patients with Retinal Vein Occlusion: A Review of the Literature.

BACKGROUND: Retinal vein occlusion (RVO) is the second most common retinal vascular disorder after diabetic retinopathy and represents a significant cause of visual loss worldwide. Beyond visual impairment, RVO can profoundly affect patients' wellbeing and overall vision-related quality of life (QoL). Increasing evidence indicates that vision-related disability contributes to increased levels of anxiety and social limitations in affected individuals. This narrative review synthesizes current evidence on QoL outcomes in patients with RVO, highlights factors influencing psychological outcomes, a…

Potential of Sulodexide in the Treatment of Diabetic Retinopathy and Retinal Vein Occlusion.

Retinal vascular diseases, such as diabetic retinopathy or retinal vein occlusion, are common causes of severe vision loss. Central to the pathophysiology of these conditions are endothelial dysfunction, inflammation, capillary leakage, ischemia, and pathological neoangiogenesis. Capillary damage leads to leakage and the development of macular edema, which is associated with vision loss and requires complex treatment. Sulodexide, a glycosaminoglycan composed of heparan sulfate and dermatan sulfate with high oral bioavailability, exhibits several favorable pharmacologic properties, including an…

Prevention and Treatment of Retinal Vein Occlusion: The Role of Diet-A Review.

Retinal vein occlusion (RVO) is the second most common retinal disorder. In comparison to diabetic retinopathy or age-related macular degeneration, RVO is usually an unexpected event that carries a greater psychological impact. There is strong evidence to suggest that cardiovascular diseases are the most common risk factors in this pathology and it has long been known that a higher consumption of fish, nuts, fruits, and vegetables has a protective effect against these types of conditions. In the last several years, interest in plant-based diets has grown in both the general population and in t…

Association of glaucoma with risk of retinal vein occlusion: A meta-analysis.

To summarize epidemiological evidences on the association between glaucoma and the risk of retinal vein occlusion (RVO). Relevant studies were identified by searching in PubMed, EMBASE and Cochrane until February 2018. Fifteen eligible observational studies were aggregated in this analysis. All results were analysed and pooled using random effects models with 95% confidence intervals (CI). In all studies, the odds ratio (OR) of glaucoma as a risk factor for RVO was 4.01 (95% CI: 3.28-4.91). In RVO subtype-differentiated subgroup analyses (six studies), the pooled OR showed that glaucoma was as…

Retinal vein thrombosis: The Internist's role in the etiologic and therapeutic management.

Retinal vein occlusion is a common and important cause of vision loss. In general, knowledge about this condition is scant within an internist's practice but the condition is relevant because of its association with other chronic ailments. A diagnosis of RVO should prompt the investigation of conditions needing chronic management in these patients. In this review we summarize the clinical presentation of RVO, its classification, associated risk factors, and treatment focused in the internist's scope of practice.
