BACKGROUND: Parasitic conjoined twin is a rare but well-known entity with unclear embryopathogenesis. Abnormal conjoined twinning can result in an externally attached parasitic twin (PT), an enclosed foetus in foetu, or a mature teratoma. The treatment requires complete excision and reconstruction of local anatomy which is not always straightforward.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: PT cases presenting over 12 years were analysed. Patients with complete data, histopathological diagnosis and follow-up were included in the study. During follow-up, specific complications and related investigations were co

Ultrasound (US) is the first-line imaging modality for evaluating azotemic patients for urinary obstruction and renal size. US is also valuable for distinguishing congenital variants and simple cystic lesions from renal masses. Doppler US is effective in detection of renal calculi and evaluation of vascular pathology. Unfortunately, renal US is limited in distinguishing causes of medical renal disease. The kidneys have a complex internal architecture with a highly variable appearance on US. This article illustrates non-neoplastic renal conditions, including normal and embryological variants, p

Contrast-enhanced sonography is unquestionably the scientific highlight of any ultrasound congress at present. Recent results of studies on contrast media in the liver indicate that the diagnosis of tumours and metastases has reached the standard of CT and MRT and may even surpass it. The sessions dealing with contrast sonography in Graz are therefore a good indicator of the general enthusiasm and increasing acceptance for this technique and its prevalence. The talks delivered and the posters presented also point out difficulties in spreading this new technique and applying it to new indicatio

Urachal anomalies are usually found in early childhood or just after birth. These usually involve patent ductus urachus, urachal cyst, umbilical-urachal sinus or vesicourachal diverticulum. Very rarely are urachal anomalies found in adults, usully as an infected urachal cyst. We are presenting a case of surgically removed giant urachal retroperitoneal cyst that was found by chance during the abdominal ultrasound examination of a 22 year old man who was initially treated for idiopathic hypertension.

This unusual clinical case adds itself to the limited list of existing reports of retroperitoneal bronchogenic cysts in the international literature. It emphasizes the difficulties encountered in making a preoperative diagnosis, since these lesions can be described as both solid and cystic masses. A 69-year-old man underwent surgery to remove an expanding mass diagnosed as originating in the adrenal gland and discovered during clinical investigation for other indications. The lesion was excised only after adrenalectomy whereupon its cystic nature was revealed. Retroperitoneal bronchogenic cyst

A rare case of Castleman's disease of retroperitoneum is reported. The patient was an operated case of serous papillary carcinoma ovary. She was found to have an abdominal mass during follow-up. The mass was considered to be metastatic in origin and was resected. Histologically, it was diagnosed as a case of Castleman's disease.

The technique used for abdominal hysterectomy does not lend itself well to a laparoscopic approach because vital structures will be difficult to visualize and retroperitoneal spaces difficult to open. An entirely different approach is required. An operative technique for laparoscopic hysterectomy is based on a systematic dissection of the retroperitoneum in a very precise sequence of operative steps. It provides complete control of the operative field and allows visualization of all important retroperitoneal structures. The technique is simple to learn, and requires no special surgical skills …

Castleman's disease is a disorder of the lymph tissue, of undetermined etiology and with preferentially mediastinal location, although other lymphatic and extra-lymphatic locations are also possible. This entry appears under two varieties: the most frequent, hyalovascular type which generally does not have associated systemic symptoms, and the plasmocellular type associated to multisystemic symptoms in up to 50% cases, such as fever, anaemia, hypergammaglobulinemia, etc. Additional examinations beyond those usually available are not enough to establish a certainty diagnosis against other types

CASE: A 52-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with hypotension after falling from the fifth floor of an apartment building. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography showed liver injury with extravasation of contrast material from the hepatic artery, and extrahepatic portal venous injury with extravasation and pseudoaneurysm. Intra-abdominal hemorrhage was not observed, and bleeding was confined to the retroperitoneal space. Hepatic arteriography showed extravasation, while portal venography showed pseudoaneurysm but no extravasation. After transarterial embolization, the patient's vital …

Operative retroperitoneoscopy provides a less traumatic alternative to transperitoneal laparoscopy for the minimal access surgery of retroperitoneal structures. Although open and closed techniques have been described for achieving access, the former allows the creation of a larger initial retroperitoneal workspace with a greater margin of safety and in a shorter space of time.
