The use of haystacks by wolves may facilitate the transmission of sarcoptic mange.

Wildlife that use anthropogenic resources often come into conflict with humans, e.g. due to damaged property, habituation or transmission of pathogens, amongst them Sarcoptes scabiei, the aetiological agent of sarcoptic mange, an emerging panzootic skin disease. This study examines the use of haystacks intended for supplementary feeding of European bison (Bison bonasus) by wolves (Canis lupus) with sarcoptic mange and the potential role of this behaviour in skin parasite transmission and human-wolf conflict. Hay samples from the beds used by wolves were found to harbour S. scabiei mites, even

Everyday Conflict in Families at Risk for Violence Exposure: Examining Unique, Bidirectional Associations with Children's Anxious- and Withdrawn-Depressed Symptoms.

Exposure to family conflict during childhood increases risk for the development of anxiety and mood problems, though the potential for bidirectionality in this association remains unknown. It is also unclear whether nonviolent family conflict is related to children's anxious- and withdrawn-depressive symptoms within high-risk family contexts, independent of more severe events such as children's exposure to violent victimization. Participants included 1,281 children and their caregivers identified as being at high risk for family violence, interviewed prospectively at ages 6, 8, and 10 about fa

Time course of the inhibitory tagging effect in ongoing emotional processing. A HD-tDCS study.

When a cueing procedure that usually triggers inhibition of return (IOR) effects is combined with tasks that tap semantic processing, or involve response-based conflict, an inhibitory tagging (IT) emerges that disrupts responses to stimuli at inhibited locations. IT seems to involve the executive prefrontal cortex, mainly the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), in cognitive conflict tasks. Contrary to other inhibitory effects, IT has been observed with rather short intervals, concretely when the stimulus onset asynchrony (SOA) between the prime presented at the cued location, and the

Teacher-Student Relationship Quality and Classroom Climate From the Student Perspective: Adaptation of the SPARTS-E in the Spanish Context7.

BACKGROUND: The quality of the affective bond between teachers and their students is recognised as a key determinant of children's socio-emotional adjustment, classroom climate and academic engagement. Spain, however, lacks student-reported measures grounded in attachment theory. This study therefore adapted and validated the Student Perception of Affective Relationship with Teacher Scale (SPARTS) for Spanish primary education and examined its associations with classroom climate and teacher perceptions. METHODS: A forward-back translation and pilot testing produced a 25-item Spanish version (

The role of social role strain, psychological resources and perceiving diabetes as a priority with self-care in women with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

BACKGROUND: The burden of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) has increased globally and a significant number of Malaysian women are being affected by this disease. Self-care plays a vital role in improving glycemic control and preventing complications. However, women with diabetes face barriers to practising good self-care. This study aimed to determine factors associated with self-care in women with T2DM: social role strain, psychological resources (problem-focused coping and social support) and perception of diabetes as a priority. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among women wit

Dementia and mental handicap: attitudes, emotional distress and caregiving.

Against the current climate of hospital closure programmes and community care, attitudes to caregiving were examined in three groups of carers, namely mothers caring for a mentally handicapped child, mothers caring for a mentally handicapped adult and daughters caring for a parent with dementia. An 'attitude questionnaire' was developed by the author and administered, postally, to the three groups. Daughters were found to be more likely than the mothers to see their caring role in a negative way and were more inclined to favour institutional care. Possible reasons for this are discussed. The r

Unpacking the daily dynamics of parenting strain: A 15-day diary study of caregiving role overload, depressive symptoms, and parental burnout among parents of autistic children.

OBJECTIVES: To explore the day-to-day dynamics between daily caregiving role overload and daily depressive symptoms among parents of autistic children, and to examine gender differences in these variables' average levels and day-to-day dynamics, as well as whether such differences help explain parental burnout. METHODS: We recruited parents of autistic children from autism intervention centers using convenience sampling (N = 210; 81.9% mothers) in mainland China. Parents completed a brief online diary survey each evening across 15 weekdays over three consecutive weeks to assess daily depressi

First-time postpartum motherhood during armed conflict: experiences, challenges, coping, and support needs among women with mobilized partners.

Armed conflict creates profound challenges for first-time mothers navigating the early postpartum period without the presence of their partners. The abrupt loss of expected support, combined with heightened fear and prolonged uncertainty, intensifies emotional vulnerability and disrupts maternal adjustment to early parenthood. Despite extensive research on trauma and crisis, little is known about how large-scale armed conflict shapes first-time mothers' lived postpartum experiences and their engagement with care systems. This study aimed to explore these experiences among women who gave birth

The mediating effects of parental hope and psychological resilience on social support and decision conflict in children with hypospadias.

INTRODUCTION: The most common congenital genital abnormality of the urinary system in infants is hypospadias; its frequency is rising to 0.33 percent globally. Surgical reconstruction is the most effective treatment for hypospadias.Parents, as surrogate decision-makers for children, frequently experience decision-making conflicts when making decisions. Stress is neither a straightforward stimulus nor a simple response. However, a stressor (stimulus) caused by life events and influenced by numerous intermediate factors including personality, social support, and psychosomatic symptoms or disease

Remaking the 'angry Narcanned subject': Affording new subject positions through take-home naloxone training.

Naloxone is a medication used to reverse opioid overdose. Alongside its lifesaving effects, it also has a reputation for producing distress, aggression and occasionally violence upon administration. This article analyses how take-home naloxone (THN) training initiatives address naloxone's reputation for producing aggression and conflict, and how new subject positions emerge in the context of this training. While the role of naloxone in producing aggression has been discussed in a range of research, this work emphasises that such conflict is neither inevitable nor even likely because it is cont

Knowledge hiding in organizational crisis: The moderating role of leadership.

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused organizational crises leading to shutdowns, mergers, downsizing or restructuring to minimize survival costs. In such organizational crises, employees tend to experience a loss or lack of resources, and they are more likely to engage in knowledge hiding to maintain their resources and competitive advantage. Knowledge hiding has often caused significant adverse consequences, and the research on knowledge hiding is limited. Drawing upon the Conservation of Resources and Transformational Leadership theories, a conceptual framework was developed to examine knowledge

Does the quality of the relationship to parents and peers predict mental health service use during adolescence? A prospective community study.

Adolescents frequently seek emotional support from parents and peers when experiencing psychological distress. The quality of these relationships may therefore influence their help-seeking behavior and access to professional care, but it is yet unknown whether the quality of the relationship to parents and peers prospectively predict adolescent mental health service use. Guided by the Behavioral Model of Health Service Use, the present study examined whether perceived relationship quality-specifically closeness and conflict with mother, father, and best friend-prospectively predicted use of sp

Parental expressed emotion, family conflict, and symptom severity in adolescent offspring of parents with mood disorders.

BACKGROUND: Levels of expressed emotion (EE) in caregivers are associated with recurrence risk in individuals with mood disorders. In adolescent offspring of parents with mood disorders, we examined the longitudinal associations between parental EE, family conflict and youths' mood states during a trial of family-focused therapy (FFT). METHODS: Participants (N = 62; mean 15.7 yrs. ± 1.6) had current depressed mood, mood instability, and a parent with a history of depression or bipolar disorder.
