The clinical presentation of the viral enteric pathogens in newborn infants has not been adequately examined. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical characteristics of viral intestinal infections in newborn infants. Clinical data of all term and preterm infants admitted to our tertiary neonatal intensive care unit from 1998 to 2007 with clinical signs of gastroenteritis (GE) or necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) were retrospectively reviewed and compared between infants with different viral enteric pathogens in stool specimens. In 34 infants with signs of GE or NEC, enteropathogenic v

To determine the aetiology of diarrhoea in children younger than 5 years hospitalised for acute enteritis and to evidence the chief clinical aspects in correlation with different aetiological agents, a total of 402 children with acute diarrhoea were examined between February 2003 and December 2006 in the Paediatric Department of Sondrio Hospital. Faecal samples were collected and processed by routine microbiological and biochemical tests. For all patients the clinical signs and symptoms on admission were evidenced. Most of the patients (310/402, 77.1%) were infected by rotavirus, while of the

Although two rotavirus vaccines have been licensed and approved by WHO and FDA; other parallel therapeutic strategies are needed to reduce the mortality and morbidity of rotavirus induced diarrhea worldwide. Since rotaviruses utilize the host cell machinery for their replication, study was initiated to identify host proteins which positively regulate rotavirus infection. To overcome the possible variations in host response due to existence of large variety of genotypes and human-animal reassortants, the total gene expression profile of HT29 cells infected with either simian (SA11) or bovine (A

Rotaviruses are now regarded as important causes of diarrhoea in man, cattle, pigs, mice, and possibly other animals. Characteristically, di … e lactase concentrations are generally higher than those of adult animals, seem more susceptible to rotavirus infections. Implications of the hypothesis include possible new approaches to laboratory cultivation of rotaviruses, which should be more successful in cells selected for surface lactase activity, and the suggestion that the epidemiology of human rotavirus inf …

American journal of transplantation : official journal of the American Society of Transplantation and the American Society of Transplant Surgeons2015eng
Although rotavirus is usually recognized as the most common etiology of diarrhea in young children, it can in fact cause severe diseases in organ transplantation recipients irrespective of pediatric or adult patients. This comprehensive literature analysis revealed 200 cases of rotavirus infection with 8 related deaths in the setting of organ transplantation been recorded. Based on published cohort studies, an average incidence of 3% (187 infections out of 6176 organ recipients) was estimated. Rotavirus infection often causes severe gastroenteritis complications and occasionally contributes to

Viral infections lead to expeditious activation of the host's innate immune responses, most importantly the interferon (IFN) response, which manifests a network of interferon-stimulated genes (ISGs) that constrain escalating virus replication by fashioning an ill-disposed environment. Interestingly, most viruses, including rotavirus, have evolved numerous strategies to evade or subvert host immune responses to establish successful infection. Several studies have documented the induction of ISGs during rotavirus infection. In this study, we evaluated the induction and antiviral potential of vip

Enteric virus infections were studied in two children with congenital T-cell immunodeficiency. One patient (LC) with cartilage hair hypoplasia developed persistent diarrhea and malabsorption following acute gastroenteritis. Electron microscope (EM) examination of feces revealed excretion of rotavirus for more than 450 days with concurrent astrovirus infection for at least 225 days, associated with the persistent diarrhea. Prolonged infection with poliovirus type 2 following vaccination had previously been noted in this patient. The second patient (DT), with the CHARGE association and DiGeorge

Diarrhea is a major cause of childhood morbidity and mortality in developing countries, and the majority of infections are of viral etiology. We aimed to compare the etiological prevalence of the major enteric viruses in an urban and a rural setting in southern Vietnam. We simultaneously screened fecal specimens from 362 children in Ho Chi Minh City and Dong Thap province that were hospitalized with acute diarrhea over a 1-month-long period for four viral gastrointestinal pathogens. Rotavirus was the most common pathogen identified, but there was a differential prevalence of rotavirus and noro

MicroRNA (miRNA) expression is significantly influenced by viral infection, because of either host antiviral defences or proviral factors resulting in the modulation of viral propagation. This study was undertaken to identify and analyse the significance of cellular miRNAs during rotavirus (SA11 or KU) infection. Sixteen differentially regulated miRNAs were identified during rotavirus infection of which hsa-miR-142-5p was up-regulated and validated by quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Exogenous expression of miR-142-5p inhibitor resulted in a significant reduction of viral titer indicati

BACKGROUND: Intussusception, a condition where one segment of intestine invaginates into another, occurs predominantly in infants and young children. A number of potential causes have been identified including infectious agents and rotavirus vaccination. Following the introduction of rotavirus vaccination of infants in Western Australia, a laboratory surveillance programme testing notified intussusception cases for infectious agents was commenced. This led to a PCR-based study of the association between gastrointestinal viruses and intussusception.
OBJECTIVES: Conduct viral testing on stool s

Group A rotavirus (RVA) is a major cause of severe gastroenteritis in infants and young children globally, despite the availability of live-attenuated vaccines. Challenges such as limited efficacy in low-income regions, safety concerns for immunocompromised individuals, and cold-chain dependency necessitate alternative vaccine strategies. Subunit vaccines, which use specific viral proteins to elicit immunity, provide a safer and more adaptable approach. This review highlights biotechnological advancements in producing subunit vaccines, focusing on recombinant expression systems like bacterial,

In 1999, since the Rotashield, the first generation of oral Rotavirus vaccine has been confirmed that there is a link to intussusception, mainly occurs in 7 days after first dose. With the second generation of RV vaccine has been listed globally and intussusception monitoring has continued. This study reviewed the current phase Ⅲ clinical and post-marketing studies of rotavirus vaccines on the market and found that the two most widely used rotavirus vaccines, RV1 and RV5, were found the risk of intussusception increased within 7 days of ORV. The Lanzhou lamb rotavirus vaccine (LLR), which manu

Rotavirus (RV) is one of the leading causes of severe childhood gastroenteritis in children <5 years of age. Several countries have successfully implemented vaccination against RV disease; however, hesitancy to include RV vaccination in the national immunization program exists and relates, among other reasons, to the results of international post-licensure studies of RV vaccines that established an increased risk of intussusception (IS) in infants following immunization. IS is one of the major causes of bowel obstruction in infants between 4 and 10 months of age. Some studies have investigated
