Rumination and behavioural factors in Parkinson's disease depression.

OBJECTIVE: Parkinson's disease is associated with high rates of depression. There is growing interest in non-pharmacological management incl … asuring mood, motor disability and core psychological variables, including maladaptive assumptions, rumination, cognitive-behavioural avoidance, illness representations and cognitive-behavioural responses to symptoms. RESULTS: Regression analyses revealed that a small number of psychological factors accounted for the majority of depression variance, over and above tha …

Predictive Roles of Fear of Missing Out and Rumination in Depression Among ICU Nurses.

BACKGROUND: Nurses working in intensive care units (ICUs) experience occupational stress, which increases their vulnerability to psychological disorders such as depression. Depression among ICU nurses not only affects their mental well-being but may also impair the quality of patient care. Two psychological factors, fear of missing out (FoMO) and rumination, have been proposed as psychological contributors to depression. However, their predictive roles among ICU nurses remain insufficiently explored. AIM: To evaluate the predictive roles of FoMO and rumination in depression among ICU nurses.

Cognitive vulnerability in moderate, mild, and low seasonality.

This study examined the association between cognitive vulnerability factors and seasonality. Students (N = 88), classified based on the Seasonal Pattern Assessment Questionnaire as experiencing moderate (n = 26) or mild (n = 32) seasonality, and nondepressed, low-seasonality controls (n = 30) completed explicit (i.e., dysfunctional attitudes, automatic negative thoughts, seasonal attitudes, and rumination) and implicit (i.e., implicit associations test) measures of cognitive vulnerability at one winter and one nonwinter assessment. Relative to low- and mild-seasonality participants, moderate-s

Ethical dilemmas and legal ambiguity in China: a chain mediation model linking suicide rumination, legitimization, and acceptance among acutely-ill adults.

BACKGROUND: This study explores the complex intersection of euthanasia, legal ambiguities, cultural attitudes, and the psychology of suicide among seriously ill patients in China. It addresses the lack of clear legislation on euthanasia and doctor-assisted killing, the impact of cultural and philosophical beliefs, and the evolution of legal and ethical perspectives on suicide. Additionally, it examines the psychological aspects of suicide ideation in acutely-ill patients, focusing on factors like familial burden and loss of dignity. METHOD: A survey was conducted with 356 Chinese adults, aged

Psychological interventions for pre-event and post-event rumination in social anxiety: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Pre-event and post-event rumination have been consistently identified by cognitive models as important maintaining factors in Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD). This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to investigate the effectiveness of psychological treatment in reducing pre-event and post-event rumination in adults with social anxiety. A comprehensive literature search identified 26 eligible studies, with 1524 total participants. Psychological treatments demonstrated large significant within-group effect sizes (from pre- to post-treatment) in reducing pre-event rumination (g = 0.86) and p

Cognitive predictors of stress-induced mood malleability in depression.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Basic attentional control, negative biases in attention and interpretation, and rumination are all cognitive processes associated with depression; however, less is known about their predictive role in depressive mood reactivity and -recovery in response to stress, and their relation to severity of depression. DESIGN & METHODS: We experimentally induced stress based on an autobiographical imagery script in a sample of 92 participants with Major Depressive Disorder with or without comorbid anxiety disorders. We used simple regression analysis for investigating the roles

Perseverative cognition and vagally mediated heart rate variability in laboratory studies: A series of meta-analyses.

Perseverative cognition (PC), including worry and rumination, is linked to adverse health outcomes and reduced vagally-mediated heart rate variability (vmHRV) among healthy subjects. While PC-vmHRV associations across resting, reactivity, and recovery conditions represent distinct regulatory mechanisms, they have not been meta-analyzed separately. This study conducted six meta-analyses to examine within- and between-subjects effect sizes across resting, reactivity, and recovery conditions. Web of Science, PubMed, and PsycINFO were searched for laboratory studies of healthy samples including PC

The ecological validity of trait-level rumination measures among women with binge eating symptoms.

PURPOSE: Cognitive rumination is a transdiagnostic construct that has been increasingly studied in the context of eating disorders (EDs). While this literature has consistently linked trait-level general and ED-specific forms of rumination to ED psychopathology, it is not clear whether trait-level measures are independently related to symptoms in daily life. Therefore, the present study used ecological momentary assessment (EMA) to assess the ecological validity of trait measures of general rumination and ED-specific rumination, and assess the degree to which ruminative brooding and reflection

How Do Traditional and Cyber Victimization Affect Sleep Quality among College Students? The Chain Mediating Role of Rumination and Anxiety.

Previous studies have shown that peer victimization has a negative effect on sleep quality. However, there is limited understanding of how peer victimization affects sleep quality. According to the theoretical model of the stress-sleep relationship, stressors, such as peer victimization, affect individuals' sleep quality by affecting their cognitive processes and emotional responses. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the cognitive (rumination) and emotional (anxiety) mechanisms of the relationship between peer victimization (traditional and cyber victimization) and sleep quality. Usin

The impact of adolescent clinical depression and depressive symptoms on moral thinking: based on process dissociation approach.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is a critical period for moral development, and depression significantly impacts this process by altering cognitive and emotional processing, affecting the resolution of moral dilemmas. Rumination, closely linked to depression, also influences emotional and cognitive processing during moral judgments. METHODS: Study 1 examined 34 depressed adolescents and 36 healthy controls who completed the Beck Depression Inventory-Short Form and Beck Anxiety Inventory, followed by 20 moral dilemmas from the Process Dissociation (PD) procedure. Study 2 (n = 568) explored subclinical

Brief mindfulness, mental health, and cognitive processes: A randomized controlled trial.

The present study evaluated the impact of a brief mindfulness training program on emotional regulation, cognitive rumination, psychological well-being, and depressive symptoms. This is an experimental study, through a randomized controlled trial. A total of 103 people enrolled on a voluntary basis, of whom 51 were randomly selected to participate in the experimental group and 52 in the control group without intervention (on the waiting list). It is established that a brief, four-session mindfulness training program significantly increases psychological well-being and significantly reduces the

Mindfulness and rumination: stress pathways for caregivers of persons living with dementia.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Family caregivers of persons living with dementia face caregiving demands that heighten risk for anxiety, depressive symptoms, and perceived stress. Although caregiving distress is well documented, less is known about the cognitive processes that link anxiety to psychological distress, or whether mindfulness-based interventions affect these processes. This study examined rumination as a cognitive mediator linking anxiety with these outcomes and tested whether mindfulness training moderated this association. Cognitive-behavioural factors that predict sleep disturbance 4 years later.

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive models have identified a number of factors that maintain sleep disturbance. It is unknown whether similar factors lead to initial onset. This study tested whether three cognitive-behavioural factors: ruminative style, somatic sensitivity, and behavioural avoidance predicted sleep disturbance onset at four-year follow-up. METHODS: Participants (n=4,042) were assessed using a) a composite measure of Somatic Sensitivity, b) the Ruminative Style Scale, c) the Behavioural Inhibition Scale of the BISBAS and d) sleep-related items from the Goldberg Depression and Anxiety Scale.

Long-term outcomes of an internet-delivered cognitive enhancement intervention targeting residual cognitive deficits after major depressive disorder: a 2-year follow-up of an open trial.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive deficits are common and disabling residual symptoms following major depressive disorder (MDD) and are related to increased risk of relapse. Residual cognitive deficits should thus be considered an important target for treatment. However, few have reported long-term outcomes of interventions targeting residual cognitive deficits. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to (1) investigate change between pre-treatment and 2-year follow-up assessments in cognitive deficits, rumination, and symptoms of MDD after an internet-delivered intervention targeting residual cognitive deficits; (2

The Relationship Between Creativity and Intrusive Rumination Among Chinese Teenagers During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Emotional Resilience as a Moderator.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has not only resulted in immeasurable life and property losses worldwide but has also impacted individuals' development, especially teenagers. After the COVID-19 pandemic, individual rumination as an important cognitive process should be given more attention because of its close associations with physical and mental health. Previous studies have shown that creativity as an antecedent variable can predict people's mental health or adaptation. However, few studies have focused on the relationship between creativity and individual cognitive rumination after tra

Effects of Anger Rumination on Different Scenarios of Anger: An Experimental Investigation.

Anger rumination has been defined as a repetitive thinking style focused on causes and consequences of anger. Different studies have shown the role of anger rumination as a maintaining factor for emotional arousal and stress that can lead to behavioral dysregulation. The present study aims at investigating whether the role of anger rumination in increasing anger is different with respect to different anger scenarios. Moreover, effects of anger rumination on anger will be compared with the effects of 2 different thinking styles (cognitive reappraisal and distraction). Participants were asked to

Effects of rumination and distraction on working memory performance in individuals with depressive tendencies and trait anxiety.

BACKGROUND: Rumination prolongs depressive mood and impairs executive functioning including working memory and attentional control, even in healthy individuals. Distraction can potentially counteract these effects; however, many experimental paradigms have relied on neutral, self-unrelated content and have failed to reflect the self-focused nature of everyday rumination or the possible benefits of emotionally meaningful distractions. This study investigated the effects of rumination and positive and neutral distractions based on personally relevant content on working memory performance in heal

Tracking Rumination as a Stable Habit (TRASH); Scale Modification and Convergent Validity in a Clinical Sample of Youth With a History of Depression.

Rumination is a cognitive habit involving repetitive negative thinking (RNT). It is a risk factor for depression and develops during late childhood. Targeted interventions to reduce rumination are critical for reducing risk for and impact of depression. Therefore, quick and sensitive scales are needed to capture concrete, quantifiable changes in rumination habit. We developed and evaluated the Tracking Rumination As a Stable Habit (TRASH) measure, to align with Rumination-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (RF-CBT). The scale was derived, modified and expanded on from the Habit Index of Nega

Regulating Rumination by Anger: Evidence for the Mutual Promotion and Counteraction (MPMC) Theory of Emotionality.

Unlike the strategy of cognitive regulation that relies heavily on the top-down control function of the prefrontal cortex (PFC), which was recently found may be critically impaired in stressful situations, traditional Chinese philosophy and medicine views different types of emotionality as having mutual promotion and counteraction (MPMC) relationships, implying a novel approach that requires less cognition to emotional regulation. Actually, our previous studies have indicated that anger responses could be successfully regulated via the induction of sadness, and this efficiency could not be inf
