Lonely minds in lonely bodies: Loneliness as insufficient psychological and neurophysiological self-other overlap.

Loneliness affects the health and wellbeing of a substantial proportion of the global population, posing a major public health concern. Loneliness, despite being an emotional state experienced within oneself, represents a sense of isolation from other individuals beyond the self. Most contemporary psychological research on emotion, especially in adults, takes an individualistic approach and is limited in accounting for "other" minds when studying the mind of a "self." On the other hand, studies of the neurophysiology of loneliness have mostly focused on presenting the biological correlates of

From Reified Identity to Relational Ipseity: Hermeneutic Phenomenology, Language Pragmatics, and Contemplative Practices of Self-Deconstruction.

This article presents a theoretical and conceptual analysis of self-deconstruction in contemporary contemplative and clinical practices. It argues that psychological suffering is not primarily related to the existence of the self as such, but to its ontological and linguistic reification as a fixed identity, corresponding to idem-identity and to what Heidegger described as an ontology of presence (Vorhandenheit). Drawing on hermeneutic phenomenology, the self is reconceptualized as ipseity (selfhood): a relational, temporal, and performative mode of being-in-the-world. From this perspective, s

The impact of bionic prostheses on users' self-perceptions: A qualitative study.

Bionic devices for reestablishing or augmenting users' capabilities (e.g., bionic prostheses or exoskeletons) are becoming increasingly common. While prior research examined how such devices affect others' perceptions of their users, little is known about how these devices affect users' self-image and -perception, and the corresponding theory is scarce. To account for this gap, we conducted semi-structured interviews with users of bionic upper limb prostheses to obtain insights into their self- and meta-perceptions. Results of our qualitative analysis indicate that using bionic prostheses infl

Neoliberal Misfits: Reconceptualizing Debility in the Critical Medical Humanities.

In recent years, the concept of debility has gained a lot of attention. In critical theory and in the critical medical humanities, the concept has come to refer specifically to the general ill-health of ordinary lives under neoliberal capitalism; as such, it has triggered a surge of interest in large-scale affective assemblages that incapacitate multitudes of bodies. This article proposes neoliberal misfit as a conceptual tool to remedy the dissolution of subjectivity in these discussions. Pushing back against Jasbir Puar specifically, it argues that processes of debilitation produce a particu

Identity in bipolar disorder: Self-worth and achievement.

This article considers self and self-concept in bipolar disorder. Bipolar disorder, defined on the basis of manic symptoms, is a highly debilitating psychopathology. It is heavily grounded in biology but symptom course is still very responsive to psychological and social forces in the lives of persons who have the disorder. This review assumes an overall view of the self that is typical of personality psychology: self as traits, self as goals and aspirations, and ongoing efforts to attain those goals. In this review, we will discuss two different facets of self and identity in bipolar disorder

[Psychological impact of acne vulgaris].

Through its visible clinical aspect, acne induces a significantly impaired body image which is not correlated to clinical severity. This diminished body image and the resulting psychosocial behaviour must be considered to optimize the treatment. In addition, depressive disorders related to bodily concern are frequently observed during adolescence period and faced with these bodily transformations, acne can be a source of anxiety. It is therefore important to spot the symptoms of depression and indeed treat them if they are persistent, because they impair "self-image" and have an influence on t

[How I treat ... hypertrichosis].

Hypertrichosis can result from various origins and exhibit diverse clinical presentations. Any etiological treatment, when available, does not always lead to regression of the excess in pilosity. Most often, hypertrichosis represents a real esthetic burden and affects the patient's self-esteem. Currently the laser epilation technique offers new and promising therapeutic possibilities.

Associations of self-esteem in people with epilepsy.

PURPOSE: This systematic review aimed 1) to identify and examine research on factors associated with self-esteem in people with epilepsy (PWE), 2) to provide a quality assessment of these studies, and 3) to make recommendations for clinical practice and future research. METHODS: Systematic searches were conducted on three databases: Scopus, PsycINFO, and Medline, in January 2023. Additional publications were sought by backwards and forward citation searches. Studies meeting inclusion criteria were quality assessed before data extraction. RESULTS: Twenty-six articles were included, with a tot

Cognitive and motivational factors of argument evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Argument evaluation, including recognizing argument structures and fallacies, is crucial for academic success, yet many university students struggle with these abilities. Drawing on the motivational model of integrative processing and expectancy-value theory, this study examined how distal motivational factors (topic involvement, need to evaluate, academic self-concept in argumentation) relate to proximal appraisals (expectancy of success, task value, emotional cost) and, in turn, to argument evaluation. METHOD: Data from 675 preservice teachers were analyzed using structural equa

Echoes of the self: A neurophenomenological journey into the shifting realms of selfhood in neutral hypnosis.

Neutral hypnosis offers a valuable state for researchers interested in the nature of consciousness. By minimizing external influences and suggestions, it allows for the investigation of the intrinsic qualities of hypnotic consciousness and its relationship to normal waking states. Studies have shown that neutral hypnosis can result in a significant shift in self-perception. Self-consciousness in neutral hypnosis is often characterized by distortions in the sense of self, fluctuations in self-awareness, and alterations in the experience of agency and body ownership. However, despite these clear

The role of personal identity for sports and exercise across the life span: Mediating processes and determinants.

In this article, I discuss the role of personal identity for engagement in physical exercise. While being a most powerful determinant of an individual's level of physical exercise, the identity of a person is still a distal predictor that does not immediately translate into specific behaviours. Important questions thus relate to the processes that mediate effects of personal identity on behaviour and developmental outcomes. Cybernetic models focusing on negative feedback loops (discrepancy detection and corrective processes) provide only a limited understanding of these processes, and have to

Assessment of self-awareness after severe acquired brain injury: A systematic review and recommendations for a new classification of offline self-awareness.

Impairment in self-awareness (ISA) is an important obstacle in neurorehabilitation of severe acquired brain injury (ABI) patients since it can cause failure in adopting adequate compensatory strategies, or the implementation of ineffective or dangerous behaviors. Accordingly, it should be assessed as early and accurately as possible, even if, to date, no consensus exists on how best to measure SA, and on its explanatory models. The present systematic review aimed to address: (a) to which extent ISA has been assessed in studies enrolling severe ABI patients; (b) whether studies on assessment of

Why conspiracy theorists are not always paranoid: Conspiracy theories and paranoia form separate factors with distinct psychological predictors.

Paranoia and belief in conspiracy theories both involve suspiciousness about the intentions of others but have rarely been studied together. In three studies, one with a mainly student sample (N = 496) and two with more representative UK population samples (N = 1,519, N = 638) we compared single and two-factor models of paranoia and conspiracy theories as well as associations between both belief systems and other psychological constructs. A model with two correlated factors was the best fit in all studies. Both belief systems were associated with poor locus of control (belief in powerful other

Self and identity in social anxiety disorder.

Models of social anxiety (SA) place the self as an organizing and causal center involved in the maintenance of this condition. An integrative conceptual framework for the understanding of the self is used to review the literature on the self in SA. Two main distinctions are emphasized: the self-as-a-subject (I-self) versus self-as-an-object (Me-self), and the evolutionary-based distinction of social rank versus affiliation. We argue that (a) although much progress has been made in understanding the association between SA and Me-self, the association between SA and I-self remains largely unexpl

Guidelines for treatment of chronic depression in the aphasic patient.

This article defines the language disorder of aphasia and the motor speech disorders of apraxia of speech and the dysarthrias. Discussion includes depression and the five definable sets of behaviors related to the phenomenon: motor-expressive behaviors, affective, cognitive, motivational, and somatic, and the relationship of self-concept to both depression and visual and verbal thought. Detailed discussion of treatment of chronic depression inpatients with non-organic reactive factors is presented. These include positive reinforcement of desirable behaviors, avoidance of verbal punishment, lab

Widening the Reach: The Broad Impact of Unguided Self-Help for Eating Disorders.

A systematic review and meta-analysis conducted by Linardon and colleagues on 27 controlled trials using pure self-help for the prevention and treatment of eating disorders, reported small benefits for co-occurring difficulties such as anxiety, depression, distress and self-esteem. The findings were strongest for pre-selected samples considered at risk or who were symptomatic, and are consistent with literature from other areas indicating that focused interventions have a positive impact on comorbid difficulties. The meta-analysis raises questions about the optimal approach to address comorbid
