Self-Monitoring and Self-Efficacy in Patients with Chronic Kidney Disease During Low-Sodium Diet Self-Management Interventions: Secondary Analysis of the ESMO and SUBLIME Trials.

BACKGROUND: Patients with chronic kidney disease are often requested to engage in self-monitoring sodium (i.e. salt) intake, but it is currently unknown how self-monitoring would empower them. This study aims to assess: (1) how frequent self-monitoring tools are being used during low-sodium diet self-management interventions; (2) whether self-efficacy (i.e. trust in own capability to manage the chronic disease) is associated with self-monitoring frequency; and (3) whether higher self-monitoring frequency is associated with an improvement in self-efficacy over time. METHOD: Data from two multi…

Pain management in inflammatory bowel disease: feasibility of an online therapist-supported CBT-based self-management intervention.

BACKGROUND: Chronic pain is a poorly managed symptom of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) has an evidence base in functional gastrointestinal conditions and chronic pain. This study aimed to test the feasibility and acceptability of a 9-week online facilitator-supported CBT intervention, tailored for people with chronic IBD-related pain. DESIGN: A single-arm pre-post design with nested qualitative interviews was used. Twenty individuals with IBD and chronic pain were recruited through an online IBD charity and had consented to research in a previous survey

Are Common Sense Model constructs and self-efficacy simultaneously correlated with self-management behaviors and health outcomes: A systematic review.

This systematic review answered two questions among adults with chronic conditions: When included in the same statistical model, are Common Sense Model constructs and self-efficacy both associated with (1) self-management behaviors and (2) health outcomes? We followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines and included 29 articles. When included in the same statistical model, Common Sense Model constructs and self-efficacy were both correlated with outcomes. Self-efficacy was more consistently associated with self-management behaviors, and Common Sens…

The effect of a lay-led, group-based self-management program for patients with chronic pain: a randomized controlled trial of the Danish version of the Chronic Pain Self-Management Programme.

The Stanford Chronic Pain Self-Management Programme (CPSMP) consists of 6 2½-hour weekly workshops focusing on how to manage pain in daily life. The workshops are facilitated by 2 workshop leaders of whom at least 1 must suffer from a long-term pain condition. The program is highly structured and manualized. Only few controlled trials testing the effect of CPSMP exist. Enrolled in the study were 424 adults from 19 Danish municipalities, (72% women; age: 25-93 years) with pain of any etiology and great variation in pain history (0-50 yrs). Of these, 216 were randomized to a lay-led version of t…

The Emerging Roles of AI in Self-Directed Stress Management: Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Stress is widespread and carries substantial mental health, social, and economic burdens. Yet, access to clinician-led stress management remains constrained by service capacity, cost, and stigma. In response, artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled tools have rapidly proliferated as scalable, self-directed options. However, evidence on how these systems support stress management outside formal clinical settings remains fragmented. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review aimed to synthesize empirical evidence on how AI-enabled technologies are used for self-directed stress management. We ma

Multifunctional Self-Pumping Janus Dressing for Exudate Management and Diabetic Wound Healing.

Diabetic chronic wounds are often accompanied by excessive wound exudate maceration, which prolongs the inflammatory phase and increases the risk of infection. Such a complex wound microenvironment imposes more stringent requirements on multifunctional wound dressings. A multifunctional Cur Janus nanofibrous dressing is developed by integrating an electrospun poly(ε-caprolactone)/gelatin hydrophilic layer with a curcumin (Cur)-loaded PCL hydrophobic layer. Janus structure with asymmetric wettability, which exhibited unidirectional liquid transport properties both in vitro and in vivo. Its uniq

Engagement with gestational diabetes self-management: a qualitative study from the UK.

INTRODUCTION: Optimal management of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is essential to reduce risks for mother and child. Women with GDM have a tenfold higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes (T2D), particularly those from ethnically diverse or socioeconomically disadvantaged groups. This can be reduced through lifestyle change and annual screening but there is a paucity of data from the UK exploring engagement. Aims were to (1) explore GDM experiences among a diverse sample of UK women and (2) identify factors which could help women engage with GDM self-management guidance during pregnancy…

An Injectable, Self-Expanding Hemostatic Foam for Field-Compatible Postpartum Hemorrhage Management.

Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) remains the leading cause of maternal mortality worldwide and a major contributor to global morbidity. Although several interventions exist in high-income countries, current solutions often suffer from poor field-compatibility, limited efficacy, complex application, insufficient hemostatic support, and difficult removal. Here, a hemostatic foam designed for field compatibility and made from stable precursors, together with an easy-to-use delivery device for treating life-threatening PPH is introduced. The device enables rapid, user-friendly generation and intrauteri
