Prospective study of trigeminal sensibility after whiplash trauma.

Trigeminal sensory impairment is frequent in whiplash cases. The pathophysiology is unknown. The purpose of the present investigation was to prospectively study the trigeminal sensibility for temperature and vibration and to evaluate their relationship with the clinical symptoms. Thirty-four of 43 patients with whiplash injury were investigated through quantitative sensory tests with a mean of 6 weeks and 71 months after injury. Sensory disturbances over the trigeminal skin area persisted over the years ( r = 0.764. p < 0.000). At follow-up, a significant correlation ( r = 0.614, p < 0.000) wa

[Sensory disorders in patients with replanted upper extremities].

A study was made of the clinical characteristics and the dynamics of the recovery of different type sensitivity in 87 patients who had undergone replantation of amputated large segments of the upper limbs. No differences were revealed in the dynamics of the recovery of painful and tactile sensations. During the first year after trauma, the articular muscular sensation outstripped the painful and tactile ones. Investigation of discrimination sensitivity acquires significance only half a year after trauma, namely after the recovery of the painful sensitivity. The choice of the methods and scope

Mid-facial sensation following craniofacial surgery.

During mid-face advancement and correction of orbital dystopia, the infraorbital nerves are always stretched and displaced by the orbital floor osteotomies and bone displacement, and are at risk of damage. We have found no published work that has investigated the function of the infraorbital nerves following elective craniofacial procedures. In this study the cheek sensation and tooth sensibility in 20 patients who have had either mid-face advancement or correction of orbital dystopia was assessed. The function of the infraorbital nerve is largely undisturbed by the osteotomies and bone displa

Contact allergy to cinnamon: case report.

Allergic contact stomatitis is a rare disorder that is unfamiliar to most clinicians. The vast majority of cases are associated with consumption of products containing cinnamaldehyde or cinnamon essential oil, which are used as flavourings because of their pleasant taste and sensation of freshness. We report here the case of a patient who was diagnosed with alllergic contact stomatitis due to cinnamon-flavoured chewing gum. The clinical features of allergic contact stomatitis, which may occur indiscriminately on any of the oral mucosa, include edema and erythroplakic, ulcerous or hyperkeratoti

The role of catastrophic misinterpretation of bodily sensations and panic self-efficacy in predicting panic severity.

This study investigated the role of both negative and positive cognitions in predicting panic severity in an international sample of patients diagnosed with panic disorder (with and without agoraphobia). One hundred and fifty-nine patients were administered the Brief Bodily Sensations Interpretation Questionnaire (BBSIQ), the Self-efficacy to Control Panic Attacks Questionnaire, and the Panic and Agoraphobia Scale (PAS) prior to receiving treatment. Regression analyses indicated that both catastrophic misinterpretation of bodily sensations and panic self-efficacy independently predicted panic

Pathophysiology and management of sensitive skin: position paper from the special interest group on sensitive skin of the International Forum for the Study of Itch (IFSI).

The special interest group on sensitive skin of the International Forum for the Study of Itch previously defined sensitive skin as a syndrome defined by the occurrence of unpleasant sensations (stinging, burning, pain, pruritus and tingling sensations) in response to stimuli that normally should not provoke such sensations. This additional paper focuses on the pathophysiology and the management of sensitive skin. Sensitive skin is not an immunological disorder but is related to alterations of the skin nervous system. Skin barrier abnormalities are frequently associated, but there is no cause a

Understanding dizziness. How to decipher this nonspecific symptom.

Dizziness is a common but often nonspecific symptom. Through careful history taking and physical examination, primary care physicians can usually determine the type of sensation (vertigo or light-headedness) and its source. Although most causes of dizziness are benign, disorders of the central nervous system tend to be ominous and require immediate referral to a specialist.

[Gastroenterology and FSS].

Functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) such as functional dyspepsia (FD) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) are included in functional somatic syndromes (FSS), which are designated as medically unexplained physical symptoms. Pathopysiology of these diseases are characterized by multi-functional disorders of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract including psychosomatic sensation, brain-gut interaction, autonomic nervous systems, motility disorders, local inflammation, and visceral perception. However, the standard therapy for these diseases is not established, since predominant factors among t

[Burning mouth syndrome].

Burning mouth syndrome is characterized by a painful burning or stinging sensation affecting the tongue or other areas of the mouth without obvious signs of an organic cause on physical examination. A burning mouth sensation can occur in several cutaneous or systemic diseases that must be ruled out prior to making a diagnosis of burning mouth syndrome, since this term is used exclusively to refer to idiopathic forms and is included within the cutaneous sensory disorders. In most cases, patients with burning mouth syndrome have accompanying psychologic or psychiatric conditions. Consequently, t

Genito-sensory analysis in women with arousal and orgasmic dysfunction.

INTRODUCTION: Diagnosis and treatment of female sexual dysfunction (FSD) are currently based on subjective female reports and physical examination. The GenitoSensory Analyzer (GSA) is a quantitative sensory testing tool designed to quantify vibratory and thermal sensation in the vagina and clitoris in a reproducible manner, and may therefore contribute to the diagnosis and management of FSD. AIM: To address the question of whether women with arousal and/or orgasmic sexual disorders have genital sensory abnormalities as measured by the GSA. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Thresholds for warm, cold, an

Mechanisms of change in cognitive therapy for panic disorder with agoraphobia.

The purpose of this study was to test the predictions of an integrated cognitive and behavioral model of agoraphobic avoidance in patients with chronic panic disorder and agoraphobia during the process of observed therapeutic change. Treatment was residential with the majority (n=165, 88%) receiving cognitive therapy, while the remaining 23 (12%) received guided mastery therapy. The results of latent variable path modeling of the changes occurring over the course of this treatment suggested that the anxiety elicited by bodily sensations influenced catastrophic beliefs, which, in turn, increase

Relationship Among Sensory Over-Responsivity, Problem Behaviors, and Anxiety in Emerging Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Despite the highly prevailing rate of sensory over-responsivity, problem behaviors, and anxiety among emerging adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), little is known about the nature of their experiences. While previous studies have indicated potential relationships among these conditions, their connections still need to be clarified. This study aimed to examine the relationships between sensory over-responsivity, problem behaviors, and anxiety. METHODS: Fifty-seven emerging adults with ASD (Mage = 21.4, SD = 2.5; males = 80.7%) were recruited. The Adult Sensory Profile - C

Effects of parental mental health and family environment on impulsivity in preadolescents: a longitudinal ABCD study®.

INTRODUCTION: Impulsivity is a known risk factor for the development of substance use disorders and other psychiatric conditions that is influenced by both genetics and environment. Although research has linked parental mental health to children's impulsivity, potential mediators of this relationship remain understudied. The current investigation leverages the large national Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study to assess the mediating role of family conflict - an important social context for youth development - in the relationship between parental mental health and youth impulsi

Early report on brain arousal regulation in manic vs depressive episodes in bipolar disorder.

OBJECTIVES: The arousal regulation model of affective disorders attributes an important role in the pathophysiology of affective disorders to dysregulation of brain arousal regulation. According to this model, sensation avoidance and withdrawal in depression and sensation seeking and hyperactivity in mania can be explained as auto-regulatory attempts to counteract a tonically high (depression) or unstable (mania) arousal. The aim of this study was to compare brain arousal regulation between manic and depressive bipolar patients and healthy controls. We hypothesized that currently depressed pat

Serotonin and its role in colonic function and in gastrointestinal disorders.

Serotonin (5-HT) is most commonly thought of as a neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. However, the predominant site of serotonin synthesis, storage, and release is the enterochromaffin cells of the intestinal mucosa. Within the intestinal mucosa, serotonin released from EC cells activates neural reflexes associated with intestinal secretion, motility, and sensation. Two important receptors for serotonin that are located in the neural circuitry of the intestines are the 5-HT(3) and 5-HT(4) receptors; these are the targets of drugs designed to treat gastrointestinal disorders. 5-HT(3
