Delivering brief warrior renew over video teleconferencing to women veterans with military sexual trauma: A pragmatic trial.

This program evaluation examines effectiveness and acceptability of an eight-session brief warrior renew treatment protocol, modified and delivered over video teleconferencing to women veterans who have experienced military sexual trauma. Due to social distancing to prevent the spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), there was a need to adapt and develop a virtual protocol for warrior renew to reach veterans who would otherwise not have access to care. Group exercises were redesigned for video, and class outlines were sent to participants over email. Pre- and postgroup assessments of th…

Training Male Sexual Abuse Survivors as Peer Leaders to Deliver Motivational Interviewing and Trauma-Informed Affirmative Care.

This paper provides a description and evaluation of training male sexual abuse survivors to deliver Motivational Interviewing (MI) and Motiv … ed good adherence to the MI and MI-AC conditions. Results suggest that men with lived experience of sexual trauma effectively learned to deliver MI and/or MI-AC to SGM male survivors in online groups. These interventions have the potential to expand the reach of limited services for this population as well as reduce their depression and assist in SGM men with h …

Child Sexual Abuse as Lifespan Trauma Within the Context of Intimate Partner Violence: Experiences of Caribbean Women.

Background: There is a dearth of research which explores sexual abuse from perspectives of Caribbean women, despite its high prevalence in the region. While sexual violence is universal, tackling it requires a deep understanding of the contextual specificities in which it arises and of the intersections of gender with other sources of oppression and marginalisation. It also calls for the recognition that intimate partner violence against women is not separate from, but linked to violence against girls, not only because both are forms of gender-based violence but because together they speak to

An initial investigation of the association between distress intolerance and posttraumatic stress within military sexual trauma survivors.

OBJECTIVE: Researchers have recently found several links between distress intolerance (DI), the perceived inability to withstand aversive emotional and somatic states, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms. Despite this well-established relationship, DI has yet to be examined among victims of military sexual trauma (MST), a population known to have increased rates of PTSD. Thus, the purpose of the current study was to examine overall rates of DI, as well as the relationship between DI and PTSD symptom and cluster severity using an outpatient sample of MST survivors. METHOD: The sa…

Maternal and Child Sexual Abuse History: An Intergenerational Exploration of Children's Adjustment and Maternal Trauma-Reflective Functioning.

Objective: The aim of the current study was to investigate associations, unique and interactive, between mothers' and children's histories of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) and children's psychiatric outcomes using an intergenerational perspective. Further, we were particularly interested in examining whether maternal reflective functioning about their own trauma (T-RF) was associated with a lower likelihood of children's abuse exposure (among children of CSA-exposed mothers). Methods: One hundred and eleven children (M age = 9.53 years; 43 sexual abuse victims) and their mothers (M age = 37.99;

Using Structured and Unstructured Data to Refine Estimates of Military Sexual Trauma Status Among US Military Veterans.

Sexual trauma survivors are reluctant to disclose such a history due to stigma. This is likely the case when estimating the prevalence of sexual trauma experienced in the military. The Veterans Health Administration has a program by which all former US military service members (Veterans) are screened for military sexual trauma (MST) using a questionnaire. Administrative data on MST screens and a change of status from an initial negative answer to positive and natural language processing (NLP) on electronic medical notes to extract concepts related to MST were used to refine initial estimates o…

Examining the relationship between higher educational attainment, trauma symptoms, and internalizing behaviors in child sexual abuse survivors.

The trauma symptoms of child sexual abuse (CSA) survivors don't end with the abuse, or even with the advent of adulthood. Instead, these symptoms can persist into all the realms of a survivor's life, including education, which sets the foundation for career advancement. This retrospective study of adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse (n=260) examined the relationships between trauma symptoms, dissociation, dissociative amnesia, anxiety, depression, sleep problems and higher education attainment. The purpose of this study was to determine if these factors are associated with higher educati

Case Reports: STAIR for Strengthening Social Support and Relationships Among Veterans With Military Sexual Trauma and PTSD.

Military sexual trauma (MST) is associated with high rates of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and multiple comorbid symptoms. In addition, women Veterans with MST report negative perceptions of social support, poor relationships, and difficulties in social and role functioning. Treatments for PTSD do not provide interventions to improve social or relationship functioning and do not consistently produce positive benefits regarding these outcomes. This article presents a series of case studies in which an intervention focused on building social support and relationship skills is delivered …

Retrieval inhibition of trauma-related words in women reporting repressed or recovered memories of childhood sexual abuse.

Several authors have argued that survivors of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) who report to have repressed their traumatic memories are more skilled in forgetting emotional stimuli than survivors who have always remembered the abuse. The current experiment employed a list-wise directed forgetting task to investigate whether women reporting repressed (n = 16) or recovered (n = 23) memories of CSA are better at forgetting disturbing material, relative to women reporting having always remembered their abuse (n = 55) or reporting no history of abuse (n = 20). We found no support for the hypothesis th

Group Therapy for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms Among Veterans With Military Sexual Trauma: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: Military sexual trauma (MST) is associated with substantial psychiatric sequelae, but treatment options lack evidence-based protocols tailored to this specific trauma. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of a MST-focused treatment using an 8-week virtual delivery format compared with an active control treatment to reduce symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This randomized clinical trial compared Warrior Renew (MST-focused group) with Health and Wellness (active control group) at baseline, week 8 (after treatment), and week 16 (foll…

Military sexual trauma and mental health counseling: Effects on resilience over time among recent-era U.S. veterans.

Military sexual trauma (MST) is prevalent and causes numerous deleterious effects on survivors. This study investigated the association between mental health counseling (MHC) and resilience among a large cohort of U.S. veterans who served in support of military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan following the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Data were collected over 6.5 years (Wave 1: n = 9,566, Wave 8: n = 2,970). Female veterans who experienced sexual harassment, β = -.12, and both sexual harassment and unwanted sexual contact, β = -.21, had lower baseline resilience scores. For male v…

Trauma-Informed Care for Intimate Partner Violence and Sexual Assault: Simulated Participant Cases for Emergency Medicine Learners.

INTRODUCTION: Emergency medicine (EM) providers often care for patients who present with concerns related to sexual assault (SA) or intimate partner violence (IPV). However, many providers feel uncomfortable discussing SA and IPV with patients. We aimed to design a curriculum using trauma-informed care principles to improve self-assessed competency in caring for this patient population. METHODS: EM learners, including residents, EM physician assistant fellows, and medical students, attended a 25-minute didactic session introducing the concept of trauma-informed care and important questions to

Sexual and Gender Minority Status Predicts Additional Variance in PTSD Symptoms After Accounting for Conventional Trauma Exposure.

OBJECTIVE: Sexual and gender minority (SGM) populations have substantially higher rates of most psychopathologies. Several theoretical models have been proposed attributing the disparities to either a) additional stressors related to their minoritized status (i.e., minority stress) or b) that stressors interact with a pre-existing vulnerability. A parallel body of research posits minority stress as a form of trauma and connects discrimination to Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). METHOD: The present study attempts bridge these two areas of literature by testing if SGM status-a proxy for m

Feasibility Trial of a Newly Developed Brief Psychological Trauma Intervention for Children Surviving Sexual Abuse in India.

Given the alarming increase in incidences of child sexual abuse (CSA), the present study was conceived to conduct a feasibility trial for a brief CSA-focused cognitive-behavioral intervention for children. A quasi-experimental single-group pre-post design with convenient sampling was adopted. The intervention module was administered to 20 children aged 7-13 years (M = 10.4, SD = 1.3) with a CSA history. The intervention was spread across a minimum of six required sessions and a maximum of 12 sessions held weekly for approximately 90 to 120 minutes' duration to restore the child's functioning a

Developing an Understanding of Complex Trauma Among Child Sexual Assault Survivors in South Africa: Implications for Practice.

South Africa has extraordinarily high levels of CSA with profound immediate and long-term mental health outcomes. This study aimed to investigate the mental health adjustment of children who experienced CSA and accessed support services using mixed methods. Structured interviews using validated mental health screening tools were conducted with children, between the ages of 7-18 years at three intervals over a 10-month period. Semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted with primary caregivers to explore their views on the child's adjustment, and a validated parenting measure was used

Developing a trauma focused cognitive behavioral therapy application for adolescents with problematic sexual behaviors: A conceptual framework.

Sexual abuse (SA) perpetration is a significant public health problem; SA perpetration is most likely to emerge during adolescence and youth ages 13 to 17 account for a significant portion of all child sexual abuse. While research shows that these youth have high rates of adversity, once they have engaged in problem sexual behavior (PSB), their own trauma histories are often ignored with treatment primarily focused on reducing risk for reoffending. Although sexual re-offense rates among adolescents with PSB are very low, the rates of non-sexual recidivism are considerably higher; with almost h

The effect of military sexual trauma on competitive employment status following veterans health administration supported employment services.

Military sexual trauma (MST) is prevalent, and some initial evidence suggests it is associated with impaired employment outcomes. The Veterans Health Administration (VHA) offers supported employment (SE) and Community-Based Employment Services (CBES), which consist of individualized employment support integrated with mental health treatment. The objective of this study was to examine the prevalence and effect of MST on competitive employment outcomes following participation in SE or CBES. Participants were a national set of Veterans who participated in VHA SE or CBES services between 2015 and …

Non-supportive responses to adolescents who have experienced sexual abuse: Relations with self-blame and trauma symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Youth who have experienced sexual abuse sometimes also experience non-supportive responses, such as accusations of lying, from people in their family and social environment. Little is known about how such responses from different sources (caregivers, friends, other adults) correlate with one another and operate together in the prediction of youth problematic thinking, such as self-blame, and trauma symptoms. OBJECTIVE: To better understand how non-supportive responses from different sources relate to one another and contribute to youth problems following sexual abuse. PARTICIPANT
