Spatial and temporal gait characteristics of elderly individuals during backward and forward walking with shoes and barefoot.

Backward walking (BW) is an inherent component of mobility and function in daily activities, particularly indoors, when it is more likely that a person is barefoot. No studies to date have compared the spatio-temporal characteristics of BW with and without shoes in elderly individuals. This study compared spatio-temporal measures of BW and forward walking (FW) among elderly individuals while barefoot or wearing shoes. Forty-seven elderly individuals (13 men and 34 women, 76.7±7.7years of age) were evaluated. Participants were requested to walk at a comfortable, self-selected pace across the GA

Do corrective shoes improve the development of the medial longitudinal arch in children with flexible flat feet?

BACKGROUND: Flexible flatfoot, as the most prevalent foot deformity in pediatric population still has no standardized strategy for its management hence some orthopedic surgeons have the tendency to use orthotic devices. The objective of this study is to evaluate whether orthotic shoes effect the natural course of the developing medial longitudinal arch in children diagnosed with moderate flexible flatfoot. METHODS: Fourty-five children (33 boys and 12 girls) with moderate flexible flatfoot were enrolled in this study. They were followed up for 34.6 ± 10.9 months (24-57 months). Patients in gr

Physical training in boots and running shoes: a historical comparison of injury incidence in basic combat training.

For many years, U.S. Army soldiers performed physical training (PT) in a modified duty uniform and combat boots. The belief that PT in combat boots was associated with injuries lead to the introduction of running shoes for PT in 1982. A historical comparison was conducted examining injuries before and after the change to running shoes in Basic Combat Training (BCT). Searches in literature databases and other sources identified 16 studies with quantitative data on injury incidence during 8-week BCT cycles. Employing studies with similar injury definitions (n = 12), injury incidence was compared

Orthopaedic shoes improve gait in a Charcot-Marie-Tooth patient: a combined clinical and quantified case study.

The aim of this study was to assess the extent to which orthopaedic shoes improved gait in a patient with Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease and to show how the latest gait analysis tools available can help to assess and quantify the efficacy of this treatment. The case of a 55-year-old woman with CMT disease is described. She complained mainly of pain and frequent falling. The physical examination and the clinical gait analysis showed the presence of bilateral foot drop, high-stepping and varus. Treatment based on physical therapy and orthopaedic shoes was prescribed. In order to assess the cl

A Retrospective Analysis of Distal Shoe Space Maintainers Placed in a Specialised Paediatric Dental Clinic.

Background: Space management after the premature extraction of second primary molars remains a challenge. Distal Shoe space maintainers (DSSMs) have been recommended after such extraction before the eruption of first permanent molars (FPMs) to prevent space loss and subsequent complications. There is lack of evidence for their clinical use and possible complications after their insertion. Therefore, this study aims to investigate survival rates and complications of DSSMs. Methods: Digital patients' records were retrospectively screened for inserted DSSMs between 2014 and 2022, identifying 190

A Smart Shoe System for Gait Analysis and Remote Monitoring in Parkinson's Disease-A Validation Study.

Continuous gait monitoring is important in Parkinson's Disease (PD) as gait deteriorates with disease progression and responses to treatment vary over time. Wearable sensor systems offer a practical alternative to laboratory-based gait assessment for real-world monitoring. This study aimed to (1) validate spatiotemporal gait parameters derived from the NUSHU smart shoe system against the Vicon motion capture system in healthy older adults and individuals with PD, and (2) assess whether measurement agreement was maintained during active vibrotactile feedback delivery. Thirty-two participants (1

An Investigation of Foot Temperature Deviations in Individuals with Diabetes: Insights from Wearable In-Shoe Technology.

Plantar foot temperature is a valuable indicator of diabetes-related complications, but traditional assessment methods, such as infrared thermography and contact thermometers, require unshod feet and controlled conditions, limiting their practicality for continuous monitoring. In this study, we employ a smart insole with 21 embedded temperature sensors to capture plantar temperature data from shod feet. We introduce a novel approach that leverages per-foot relative temperature values-normalized to the foot's mean-rather than absolute values or inter-foot asymmetry. Using data collected during

The Effect of Shoe Insole Stiffness Modifications on Walking Performance in Older Adults: A Feasibility Study.

Shoes or insoles embedded with carbon fiber materials to increase longitudinal stiffness have been shown to enhance running and walking performance in elite runners, and younger adults, respectively. It is unclear, however, if such stiffness modifications can translate to enhanced mobility in older adults who typically walk with greater metabolic cost of transport compared to younger adults. Here, we sought to test whether adding footwear stiffness via carbon fiber insoles could improve walking outcomes (eg, distance traveled and metabolic cost of transport) in older adults during the 6-minute

Perception of Running Shoe Cushioning: Determining the Correspondence between Subjective Assessment and In-vitro Measurement.

Running shoes, and in particular insoles, are the first interface between runners and running surface. Different insole attenuation properties may vary perception of cushioning and, accordingly, the effect on muscle adaptation. The aim of this study is to find the just noticeable difference between four insole materials, and investigate the parameters of in-vitro measurement of impact testing to predict cushioning comfort. Nineteen (n = 19) male participants were recruited from the sports center at the Technical University of Munich with a mean age of 23.89 (SD = 2.31), weight of 73.52 kg (SD

Symmetry of Shoe Size and Calf Girth in Children With Treated Idiopathic Clubfoot: A Longitudinal Study.

BACKGROUND: Treatments for idiopathic clubfoot focus on obtaining a functional foot, typical gait pattern, and activity participation. Patients and families are also concerned about practical considerations regarding shoe wear and the appearance of the calf. The purpose of this study was to quantify whether children treated for idiopathic clubfoot have symmetry differences in shoe size and calf girth when presenting with unilateral versus bilateral involvement. METHODS: Participants with a diagnosis of idiopathic clubfoot (treated with Ponseti or French functional methods) were prospectively

Influence of shoe torsional stiffness on foot and ankle biomechanics during tennis forehand strokes.

Tennis shoe characteristics need to minimise the risk of athletes suffering ankle injuries and improve players' feet performance. This study aims to evaluate the influence of shoe torsional stiffness on running velocity, stance duration, ground reaction forces and ankle biomechanics during two different tennis forehand runs and strokes. Ten right-handed advanced male tennis players performed two specific tennis forehand runs and strokes at maximal effort (a shuttle run with a defensive open stance forehand - SRDF and a lateral jab run with an offensive open stance forehand - JROF) with four di

Comparison of skin and shoe marker placement on metatarsophalangeal joint kinematics and kinetics during running.

This study investigated the effects of marker placement (skin- vs shoe-mounted) on metatarsophalangeal joint (MTP) kinematics and kinetics during running. Fifteen trained men ran on a 15-m track at 10 and 13 km/h with three (low, standard and high stiffness) shoe longitudinal bending stiffnesses (LBS). Reflective markers were fixed on the shoe upper, and on the skin using holes cut in the shoe. Three-dimensional marker positions and ground reaction forces were recorded at 200 and 2000 Hz, respectively. Kinematic and kinetic parameters were analyzed using one-dimensional metrics (statistical pa

Augmenting Virtual Reality Terrain Display with Smart Shoe Physical Rendering: A Pilot Study.

Haptic terrain rendering is limited in existing Virtual Reality (VR) systems. This article describes integration of the Smart Shoe (SS) for physical terrain display with the TreadPort VR system. The SS renders both gross sloped terrain and subtle sensations of stepping on small objects or uneven surfaces. The TreadPort projects terrain on the floor and the SS renders terrain that the user steps upon via motion tracking. The research is motivated towards eventually providing gait training for people with Parkinson's Disease (PD), hence this work presents a pilot study evaluating haptic terrain

Acute shoe effects on Achilles tendon loading in runners with habitual rearfoot strike pattern.

OBJECTIVES: Although the overuse injury rate of the Achilles tendon (AT) for running is high, the effect of shoe conditions on AT loading remains unclear. Hence, this study aims to determine the mechanical properties of AT during running under different shoe conditions (minimalist vs. conventional shoes). DESIGN: This work is a controlled laboratory study. METHODS: Sixteen healthy male rearfoot strike runners were recruited to complete over ground running trials at 3.33 m/s (±5%) under two shoe conditions (minimalist shoes: INOV-8 Bare-XF 210; conventional shoes: NIKE AIR ZOOM PEGASUS 34). The effectiveness of shoe modifications and orthotics in the conservative treatment of Civinini-Morton syndrome: state of art.

Civinini Morton's Syndrome (CMS), better known as Morton's Neuroma, is a benign enlargement that typically affects the third common digital branch of the plantar nerve. It is a common cause of metatarsalgia leading to debilitating pain. It prefers the female gender, with a female to male ratio of 5:1 and an average age of 50 years at time of surgery. Precise aetiology remains under debate, with four etiopathogenetic theories often cited in the literature. Clinical symptoms, physical exam and instrumental evidence are important in assessing and grading the disease. Biomechanics seem to play an
