The Work and Social Adjustment Scale (WSAS): An investigation of reliability, validity, and associations with clinical characteristics in psychiatric outpatients.

OBJECTIVE: This study, the first to assess the reliability and validity of the Work and Social Assessment Scale (WSAS) in Norwegian routine mental health care, examines differences in functional impairment based on sick leave status, psychiatric diagnosis, and sex. METHOD: Including 3573 individuals from community mental health services (n1 = 1157) and a psychiatric outpatient clinic (n2 = 2416), exploratory factor analysis (EFA) on subsample 1 and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) on subsample 2 were utilized to replicate the identified factor structure. RESULTS: EFA supported a one-factor…

Do Acute Illness Perceptions Moderate the Association of Pre-Collision Welfare Benefits and Later Neck Pain or Disability Following Whiplash Trauma? A Prospective Multicentre Cohort Study.

Objectives: Whiplash trauma is a worldwide significant public health issue, with post-collision chronic pain and physical and mental disabil … sion. Further, we obtained register data on the number of weeks on three types of welfare benefits (sick leave benefits, unemployment benefits, and social assistance benefits) for a five-year period before the collision. Multiple logistic regression was applied. Results: 740 patients were included. We did not find a significant moderating effect of illness p …

Diagnosis-specific Cumulative Incidence of Return-to-work, Resignation, and Death Among Long-term Sick-listed Employees: Findings From the Japan Epidemiology Collaboration on Occupational Health Study.

BACKGROUND: While it is essential to understand how long is sufficient for return-to-work when designing paid sick-leave systems, little att … 14.2% by 1.5 years. CONCLUSION: Return-to-work and resignations occurred commonly within 1 year of sick leave among long-term sickness absentees in the Japanese private companies. Our findings may assist occupational physicians and employers in developing effective social protection schemes.

Prediction of Work Impact in Axial Spondyloarthritis by the Work Instability Scale: A Prospective Cohort Study of 101 Patients.

OBJECTIVE: Axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) may have an effect on work. The Ankylosing Spondylitis Work Instability Scale (AS-WIS) assesses d … f ≥ 11 (0-20 scale). At follow-up, adverse work outcomes (AWO) were grouped as moderate (short-term sick leave) or severe AWO (long-term sick leave, disability, unemployment). Univariable and multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed to explain AWO. RESULTS: Of 101 patients, mean age 45 (SD 9) years, 52% male, disease duration was 14 (SD 8) …

Multidisciplinary Intervention and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for Return-to-Work and Increased Employability among Patients with Mental Illness and/or Chronic Pain: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: People on long-term sick leave often have a long-lasting process back to work, where the individuals may be in multiple and recurrent states; i.e., receiving different social security benefits or working, and over time they may shift between these states. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of two vocational rehabilitation programs, compared to a control, on return-to-work (RTW) or increased employability in patients on long-term sick leave due to mental illness and/or chronic pain. METHODS: In this randomized controlled study, 427 women and men were allocated to…

Different work capacity impairments in patients with different work-anxieties.

PURPOSE: Persons with work-anxieties are especially endangered for work capacity impairment and sick leave. Work capacity impairment is not directly due to symptoms but due to illness-related capacity disorders. Work capacity impairments can be described on different dimensions (e.g., social interaction, decision making and judgment, endurance, mobility). Understanding the type of work capacity impairment is important for reintegration interventions. This is the first study to investigate work capacity impairment in risk patients with different work-anxieties. METHODS: Two hundred and forty-f…

Risk factors for the rapid increase in risk of acute coronary events in patients with new-onset rheumatoid arthritis: a nested case-control study.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate risk factors for acute coronary syndrome (ACS) in patients with new-onset rheumatoid arthritis (RA). METHODS: We performed a nested case-control study of patients with incident RA included in the Epidemiological Investigation of RA study. Cases with ACS were identified using Swedish national health registers and matched with up to 5 controls without ACS, based on incidence density-based sampling. Information on potential exposures (clinical disease activity, serologic features, genetic markers, comorbidities, pharmacotherapies, and sick leave) was collected from medi…

Burden of Tick-Borne Encephalitis, Sweden.

In recent decades, the incidence of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) in Sweden has increased. To calculate the burden of disease over a 17-year period, we analyzed data from the Swedish National Health Data Register for TBE cases diagnosed during 1998-2014. We compared healthcare use and sick leave associated with 2,429 persons with TBE with a referent cohort of 7,287 persons without TBE. Patients with TBE were hospitalized for significantly more days during the first year after disease onset (11.5 vs. 1.1 days), logged more specialist outpatient visits (3.6 vs. 1.2 visits), and logged more sick …

Treatment of low-energy tibial shaft fractures: plaster cast compared with intramedullary nailing.

We analyzed data from 87 patients who had displaced closed or open grade I simple or spiral wedge tibial shaft fractures caused by low-energy impact. Fifty-four patients were treated with plaster cast and 33 with intramedullary locking nail (IMLN). Delayed union only occurred in 8 patients after plaster cast treatment. Forty-two patients in the IMLN group and one in the plaster cast group suffered from anterior knee pain. Final treatment outcome, healing time, hospitalization time and duration of sick leave were assessed on the basis of 25 matched pairs of patients. Mean healing time, hospital…

Characterising disability in patients with long COVID-does gender matter? an analytic cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Long COVID affects patients' daily functioning and activity participation. However, gender-specific differences remain insufficiently explored despite well-documented effects of gender on health outcomes. This study examines gender differences in sociodemographic characteristics, employment status, sick leave, and mental fatigue among individuals with long COVID. Furthermore, this study explores self-reported and prioritised problems with activities of daily living (ADL) across genders and compares patterns between women and men. We hypothesised that traditional gender roles would …

The injury panorama in a Swedish professional ballet company.

We performed a combined retro- and prospective study of injuries in a Swedish professional, classical ballet company during 5 consecutive years. There were 390 injuries incurred by 98 dancers over a 5-year period, i.e., 0.6 injuries/1000 dance hours. Most injuries were considered to be due to overuse. The median sick leave was 2.3 weeks per injury. The foot and ankle region is vulnerable in classical ballet dancers, and overuse injuries can result in long periods of sick leave. Of the dancers employed for more than 1 year 95% were suffered injuries during the study period. We found considerabl…
