[Perception of and psychological coping with medical technology. How does the patient perceive percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty?].

BASIC REMARKS: Since, as a result of technological progress, ever more interventions are being carried out in the conscious patient without anesthesia or sedation, psychological coping is an important aspect. METHODS: Over a period of one year, all patients undergoing coronary artery dilatation at the University Hospital, Frankfurt, were admitted to the study in which the patients and their spouses, as well as the physicians involved were questioned (individual questioning, questionnaires, interviews). In addition, a catamnestic follow-up examination was performed. RESULTS: In addition to nu

[Polyarthritis patients with and without detected rheumatoid factor: a comparison of the psychological personality].

The study examined again the question whether the presence of rheumatoid factor in rheumatoid arthritis (rh.A.) patients has a bearing on their personality scores. For this purpose 20 seropositive rh.A. patients were compared by means of the FPI-R (Freiburg Personality Inventory) with 20 rh.A. patients in whom the rheumatoid factor was absent. Groups were matched for sex and age; severity and duration of disease were taken into account as covariates. The covariates showed significant correlations with some personality variables. Diagnostic subgroups, however, did not differ in any of the FPI s

[Value and characteristics of physical medicine and health resort medicine in advanced age].

Physical medicine and spa medicine both have the impetus of rehabilitation in common. In addition, they share the therapeutical orientation toward the performance capacity of organs and functional systems, as well as to activities of daily living, the consideration of chronobiological rules of training and adaptation, and an acknowledging of the fact that diseases and, therefore, the basics of rehabilitation are constantly changing. With increasing age the relation of therapy to function resp. rehabilitation becomes increasingly important. Gerontorehabilitation is distinguished from general re

Somatic complaints in childhood tic disorders.

Twenty-six children diagnosed with chronic tic disorders (18 with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome and 8 with chronic motor tic disorder) were studied for unexplained physical complaints. Compared to normal controls, an excess of somatic complaints was found in the tic disorders group; this was similar to an excess of somatic complaints in a mixed psychiatric clinic group. Medication produced no significant effect on somatic complaints for patients in the tic and psychiatric clinic groups. Within the tic disorders group, no significant correlation was found between the increased somatic complain

Primary fibromyalgia syndrome--a variant of depressive disorder?

Primary fibromyalgia syndrome (PFS) is a form of connective tissue rheumatism, characterized by diffuse chronic pain in periarticular tissue, for which no organic cause can be identified. The present study examined the personal and family history, clinical and psychodynamic features of 40 PFS patients, and compared them to a matched control group of patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis. Depression, either in the past or at present, was seen significantly more often among PFS patients that among controls. Dependence and passivity, idealization of family relationships, obsessive-compulsi

Psychiatric consultations with depressed medical inpatients: a randomized controlled cost-effectiveness study.

Nonspecific, supportive psychiatric consultations were performed with a random sample of thirty-three general medical inpatients scoring thirteen or more on the Beck Depression Inventory. The control group consisted of thirty-five patients, matched for sex, marital status, somatic history, and seriousness of illness. The number of patients receiving no analgesic and/or psychotropic medication in the consult group (39%) was significantly greater than that in the control group (17%). When compared with their mean BDI score on admission, the BDI score just before discharge had decreased significa

Life stress and psychosomatic symptoms among 14 to 16-year old Finnish adolescents.

School children (N = 2013) completed questionnaires in class on three occasions over a period of 17 months. Life stress data for 12 months were gathered retrospectively in the last questionnaire. Life events and interpersonal problems were associated with psychosomatic symptoms. In terms of change in symptoms, the impact of life events and interpersonal problems was demonstrated in boys but not in girls. Though boys with a history of no events or problems had lower symptom scores than girls, boys with a history of many events or problems caught up with the girls by the end of the follow-up per

Depression and hypochondriasis in family practice patients with somatization disorder.

The relationships specified in DSM-III between somatization disorder and depression, and somatization disorder and hypochondriasis require further validation and easier methods of detection for use by primary care physicians. The authors investigated hypochondriacal and depressive symptoms in 13 family practice outpatients with somatization disorder. Pain complaints and depressive symptomatology were present in over 75% of this group, while hypochondriacal symptoms were present in 38%. The mean score on the somatization scale of the Hopkins Symptom Check List (HSCL-90) was greater than that re

Brodifacoum rodenticide ingestion in a patient with shigellosis.

Factitious disorders are characterized by the intentional feigning or induction of signs and/or symptoms in order to assume the sick role. The spectrum of diseases and symptoms simulated is extensive. Although some patients may seek only the gratifications of the sick role, typically patients seek health care for their afflictions. We report the case of a woman with a history of numerous unexplainable illnesses and laboratory findings who had shigellosis. On routine evaluation, a severe prothrombin coagulopathy was discovered and later determined to be caused by brodifacoum, a "superwarfarin" …

Deep insights into the mechanism of isorhamnetin's anti-motion sickness effect based on photoshoproteomics.

Isorhamnetin has recently been found to exhibit a remarkable anti-motion sickness effect, yet the underlying mechanism is still unclear. Herein, network pharmacology was employed to conduct a preliminary analysis on the possible biological processes involved. Results showed that common targets were localized in membranes, mitochondria, and glutamatergic synapses. In particular, protein phosphorylation, protein serine/threonine/tyrosinase activity and signal transduction might play a role in isorhamnetin's anti-motion sickness effect. Thus, mice phosphoproteomics analysis was further performed

[Motion sickness in motion: from carsickness to cybersickness].

- Motion sickness is not a disorder, but a normal response to a non-normal situation in which movement plays a central role, such as car travel, sailing, flying, or virtual reality.- Almost anyone can suffer from motion sickness, as long as at least one of the organs of balance functions. If neither of the organs of balance functions the individual will not suffer from carsickness, seasickness, airsickness, nor from cybersickness. - 'Cybersickness' is a form of motion sickness that is stimulated by artificial moving images such as in videogames. Because we are now exposed more often and for lo

An appraisal of the value of vitamin B12 in the prevention of motion sickness.

Unpublished reports have suggested that hydroxycobalamin (B12, i.m.) prevents motion sickness. Some biomedical evidence supports this contention in that B12 influences the metabolism of histidine and choline; dietary precursors to neurotransmitters with established roles in motion sickness. Susceptibility to motion sickness was evaluated after B12 (1000 micrograms, i.m.). Subjects initially completed vestibular function and motion sickness susceptibility tests to establish normal vestibular function. The experimental motion stressor was a modified coriolis sickness susceptibility test. Subject

Anticholinergic Versus Antihistaminic Treatment for Simulator Sickness Prevention.

Flight simulators have an essential role in aircrew training. Occasionally, symptoms of motion sickness, defined as simulator sickness, develop during these sessions. Preventive methods for motion sickness have been investigated thoroughly; however, only a few studies have examined preventive treatments for simulator sickness. The aim of this study was to examine the efficacy of scopolamine (an anticholinergic drug) compared with cinnarizine (an antihistaminic drug) for helicopter simulator sickness prevention. A validated simulator sickness questionnaire (SSQ) score was used to determine the

[Coping strategies in laryngectomy patients].

BACKGROUND: Over the last few years, paradigms for judging the results of treatment of tumor patients have shifted. In addition to characteristics such as the complete excision of the tumor and the duration of patient survival, restoring the quality of life has become an equally important aim. There is still a lack of systematic (and sufficient) research on coping strategies as a means of dealing with malignant tumors of the head and neck. PATIENTS AND METHOD: In a cross-sectional study, 25 laryngectomees, whose voices had been successfully restored with a Provox voice prosthesis, were examine

Effects of amygdala or hippocampus lesion on hypergravity-induced motion sickness in rats.

We examined the effects of amygdala lesion (AL) or hippocampal lesion (HL) on hypergravity-induced motion sickness in rats. Rats do not vomit, but the behavior known as pica, the eating of non-nutritive substances such as kaolin, can be used as an index of motion sickness. In the present study, hypergravity-induced kaolin intake and apomorphine-induced kaolin intake were measured before and after brain lesions. After AL, hypergravity-induced kaolin intake and the ratio of the hypergravity- to apomorphine-induced kaolin intakes were decreased. These results indicate that AL suppressed motion si

Sex-disease dimorphism underpins enhanced motion sickness susceptibility in primary adrenal insufficiency: a cross-sectional observational study.

Environmental motion can induce physiological stress and trigger motion sickness. In these situations, lower-than-normal levels of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) have been linked with increased susceptibility to motion sickness in healthy individuals. However, whether patients with primary adrenal insufficiency, who typically have altered ACTH levels compared to the normal population, exhibit alterations in sickness susceptibility remains unknown. To address this, we recruited 78 patients with primary adrenal insufficiency and compared changes in the motion sickness susceptibility scores f

[Evaluating the quality of life of 42 heart transplant patients and candidates: a cross-sectional study].

OBJECTIVE: Although evaluation of heart transplant candidates and recipients is usually based on objective clinical variables, self-assessment has been proved to be an important component of treatment evaluation. Quality of life is a multidimensional concept, a mix of objective and subjective measures, that could reflect the adjustment to the illness and its treatment. Few studies have reported on quality of life in heart transplantation candidates. This exploratory study, conducted in Bordeaux (France), was designed to assess both objectively and subjectively the quality of life in heart tran

[High altitude cerebral oedema].

Acute mountain sickness and high altitude cerebral edema are specific pathologies of high altitude exposure. The usual symptoms of acute mountain sickness are headache, nausea, vomiting, insomnia, lassitude, dizziness and ataxia. High altitude cerebral oedema is a severe state of acute mountain sickness with, in addition, alteration of mental status and consciousness. The pathophysiology of these 2 diseases are essentially due to an increase of intracranial pressure directly dependent of an increase of cerebral volume. Molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying acute mountain sickness and hi
