Rouleaux formation in sickle cell traits.

Rouleaux formation of washed red blood cells (r.b.c.s) from subjects with sickle cell trait (HbAS) was measured by the rapid coagulation method. The r.b.c.s were suspended in the donor's native plasma or in 1.3% dextran in phosphate-buffered Ringer solution at pHs of 6.5, 7.4 and 8.2. HbAS cells showed more rouleaux formation than HbAA (normal) cells in plasma (P less than 0.005). Plasma fibrinogen concentration of HbAS and HbAA subjects did not differ significantly (mean 2.9, s.d. 0.7 g l-1 for both groups). In the dextran solution, HbAS cells were more aggregable at pH 6.5 but less at pH 8.2…

Frequency distribution of sickle cell anemia, sickle cell trait and sickle/beta-thalassemia among anemic patients in Saudi Arabia.

BACKGROUND: Notwithstanding, the growing incidence of sickle cell hemoglobinopathies (SCH) such as sickle cell anemia (SCA) or sickle cell disease, sickle/beta-thalassemia; the exact prevalence remains obscure in Saudi Arabia. Hence, this study is an attempt to determine the frequency of SCA and sickle cell trait (SCT) among all anemic patients with SCH treated at the King Abdul-Aziz Medical City (KAMC), Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Furthermore, the hemoglobin (Hb) S and other Hb patterns (Hb AS and Hb F) were also estimated in SCA and SCT patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Results of Hb capillary ele…

Health outcomes and services in children with sickle cell trait, sickle cell anemia, and normal hemoglobin.

The health effects of sickle cell trait among children are unknown. We compared select health outcomes and health services utilization among children with sickle cell trait, sickle cell anemia (SCA), and normal hemoglobin. Newborn screening records were used to identify children with sickle cell trait and SCA born in Michigan (1997-2014) who were enrolled in Michigan Medicaid for ≥1 year from 2012 to 2014. Each select health outcome (acute otitis media, acute respiratory infections, fever, invasive pneumococcal disease, pneumonia and influenza, renal complications, spleen problems, stroke) was…

Craniofacial geometric morphometrics in the identification of patients with sickle cell anemia and sickle cell trait.

OBJECTIVE: The aims of this study were to identify the main characteristics regarding the shape and size of the craniofacial region in patients with sickle cell anemia (SCA) and sickle cell trait (SCT) and in unaffected patients using geometric morphometrics and to check the efficiency of this method. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A cross-sectional analytical study of 45 patients (15 in each group) was performed. Lateral radiographs of the skull were used for the analysis. Seventeen landmarks and semilandmarks were placed for the measurements. The Pocrustes analysis of variance (ANOVA), regression an…

Endothelial cell interactions with sickle cell, sickle trait, mechanically injured, and normal erythrocytes under controlled flow.

Increased adhesive forces between sickle erythrocytes and endothelial cells (EC) have been hypothesized to play a role in the initiation of vasoocclusion in sickle cell anemia. Erythrocyte/human umbilical vein EC interactions were studied under controlled flow conditions for normal (AA), homozygous sickle cell (SS), sickle cell trait (AS), mechanically injured normal, and "high-reticulocyte control" RBC by using video microscopy and digital image processing. The number of adherent RBC was determined at ten-minute intervals during a washout period. Results indicate that SS RBC were more adheren…

Prevalence of sickle cell trait and HbC-trait in Blacks from low socioeconomic conditions.

In the present investigation we did not observe age or sex differentials in the prevalence of sickle cell or HbC-traits in Black males or females of low socioeconomic status. When our data were compared to those of others, we found no evidence for a socioeconomic differential in the prevalence of these traits.

Hemoglobin synthesis studies of a family with alpha-thalassemia trait and sickle cell trait.

The ratio of total globin alpha to beta chain synthesis was determined in reticulocytes isolated from the blood of the members of a black family, some of whom had sickle cell trait with low blood HbS concentrations (25-30%). The results support the hypothesis that sickle cell trait individuals with low HbS concentrations also carry a gene for alpha-thalassemia.

Are sickle cell anaemia and sickle cell trait predictive factors for periodontal disease? A cohort study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Periodontal diseases are associated with bacterial challenge and the host immune response, and are also modulated by genetic factors. There is evidence that sickle cell anaemia (SCA) does not represent a risk factor for periodontal diseases. However, it is still unclear whether the heterozygous condition [sickle cell trait (SCT)] is associated with periodontal diseases. SCT is a genetic condition that can cause vaso-occlusive events, which may be associated with a propensity to bacterial infections. The aim of this study was to investigate the association of SCA and S…

Alpha-lipoic acid modifies oxidative stress parameters in sickle cell trait subjects and sickle cell patients.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Oxidative stress plays a crucial role in the sickle cell disease. Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) is a potent antioxidant that is employed in the treatment of several diseases. The objective of this study was to test the ALA effect in the sickle cell disease (SCD) treatment. METHODS: Sixty subjects were selected and divided into groups according to the hemoglobin profile: AA (normal), AS (SCD trait subject) and SS (SCD patient). Patients were randomized into a placebo-controlled trial and treated with either ALA (200 mg) or vehicle. Blood samples were collected before supplementati
