Triple metachronous colon cancer.

A 72-year-old male with an early stage "node-negative" sigmoid colon cancer developed 2 separate "node-negative" early stage colon cancers during a subsequent colonoscopy surveillance regimen, the first in the descending colon 7 years later, and the second in the cecum almost 14 years after the first cancer was resected. After the initial symptomatic cancer, all subsequent neoplastic disease, including malignant cancers were completely asymptomatic. This entity, multiple primary cancers, likely reflected the use of a colonoscopic surveillance regimen.

[A Case of Unresectable Colorectal Cancer with Complete Remission after Palliative Surgery Due to Continued Pharmacotherapy].

A 50s-year-old man was admitted to our hospital because of abdominal pain and vomitting. CT showed a thickened wall of the sigmoid colon, marked enlargement of the oral side, and a 30 mm tumor on the left lateral section of the liver. We diagnosed colonic obstruction due to sigmoid colon cancer with liver metastasis. We failed to place a colonic stent for decompression, so we performed a colostomy using the cecum. An exploratory laparoscopy was performed instead of curative surgery due to peritoneal disseminations, followed by chemotherapy and molecular targeted therapy. Although primary lesio

[Locally Advanced Sigmoid Colon Cancer in an Elderly Patient Treated with Curative Resection after Successful Panitumumab Treatment].

An 84-year-old woman had locally advanced sigmoid colon cancer that was unresectable because of deep invasion in the left pelvic wall. Transverse double-barrel colostomy was performed owing to stenosis in the sigmoid colon. The patient's performance status score was 2, and it was difficult to administer cytotoxic chemotherapy. Single-agent panitumumab chemotherapy was initiated. In addition, although S-1 was administered for 4 days in the fourth cycle, it was discontinued owing to drug intolerance. Panitumumab was administered seven times. The tumor size markedly reduced, and sigmoid colectomy

Colorectal intussusception secondary to sigmoid carcinoma in an adult.

Although intussusception is relatively common in children, it is clinically rare in adults A 54-year-old woman who presented with cramping abdominal pain and rectal bleeding was found to have sigmoid rectal intussusception secondary to adenomatous polyps of the sigmoid colon. Following confirmation of intussusception by CT scan, surgical resection was performed after manual reduction.

Laparoscopic D3 lymph node dissection with preservation of the superior rectal artery for the treatment of proximal sigmoid and descending colon cancer.

In this paper we report a technique for laparoscopic lymph node (LN) dissection for descending and proximal sigmoid colon cancer with the preservation of the superior rectal artery (SRA) to maintain the blood supply to the distal sigmoid colon. Five (5) cases were included from November 2004 to March 2005. For D3 LN dissection, the root of inferior mesenteric artery was exposed with ultrasonic cutting and coagulating surgical device to avoid bleeding. The arterial wall was then exposed with a spatula-type electric cautery down to the left colic artery (LCA). The LCA was then clipped and cut wh

Juvenile polyps at the site of a ureterosigmoidostomy. Report of five cases.

Five cases of juvenile polyps at the level of a ureterosigmoidostomy are described. One of the juvenile polyps contained an area of adenomatous tissue. The mechanisms that might cause these polyps are discussed. The mechanisms that might cause these polyps are discussed. The presence of adenomatous tissue in one of the patients may be a step of the polyp cancer sequence at the level of ureteral implantation in the colon. The authors make a plea for a call-up and close follow-up of all patients who have a ureterosigmoidostomy.

Colonic adrenocarcinomas in patients with ureterosigmoidostomies.

Two additional cases of adenocarcinoma of the sigmoid colon occurring at the site of ureterosigmoidostomy are reported. The high risk of this complication occurring in patients who have undergone ureterosigmoidostomy is described. The possible shortness of the interval from diversion to development of an adenocarcinoma, especially in those cases involving carcinoma of the bladder, is emphasized. It is strongly recommended that careful follow up of such patients should begin within several years of establishment of the ureterosigmoidostomy.

Non-operative management of gallstone sigmoid ileus in a patient with a prostatic cancer.

Gallstone ileus is an uncommon complication of calculus cholecystitis through the formation of a biliary enteric fistula. The risk of mechanical obstruction caused by gallstones is increased with its size, in addition to chronic constipation, neoplasm and diverticulitis, to name a few. Here, we present a case of an 89-year-old male patient who presented with signs of bowel obstruction, which was found to be a gallstone impacted in the sigmoid colon. Considering the patient's stable condition and his comorbidities, a conservative approach was opted including IV fluids, fleet enema and bowel res

Streptococcus viridians bacteraemia and colonic adenocarcinoma.

Even though Streptococcus bacteraemia is an infrequent presentation of colonic malignancies, there is a well-established link between Streptococcus bovis bacteraemia and colonic malignancies. Most of the physicians are well aware of this correlation and further workup is pursued in most of the cases. However, many physicians may not be aware that other species of Streptococcus viridians, other than S. bovis, can be associated with colonic malignancies. In this case report, we present a case of Streptococcus viridians (anginosus) bacteraemia as a complication of an undiagnosed sigmoid adenocarc

Pyogenic granuloma of the sigmoid colon.

Pyogenic granuloma (PG) is a polypoid form of lobular capillary hemangioma that usually occurs in the skin and some mucosal surfaces. However, it is extremely rare in the intestinal tract and its preoperative diagnosis is difficult. We report on a case of PG of the sigmoid colon in a 62-year-old woman with a 6-month history of rectal bleeding. A pedunculated polypoid lesion was detected by colonoscopy and a polypectomy was performed. A microscopical study revealed a lobular arrangement proliferation of varying sizes of capillaries within an edematous stroma. A critical review of the English li

Out of 301 intestinal obstructions treated at the 1st Surgical Clinic of Iaşi in the interval 1970-1987, 58 patients aged between 70 and 90 years (mean age 75 years) were recorded. Anatomo-clinically these 58 cases presented: strangulated hernia (19 cases), strangulated eventration (2 cases), strangulations on cords (4 cases), small intestine volvulus (8 cases), sigmoid colon volvulus (6 cases), volvulus of cecum (1 case), intestinal investigation (1 case), colorectal neoplasm (15 cases), peritoneal carcinomatosis (2 cases).
