A 23-year-old primigravida admitted to the labor room one week prior to term because of bleeding was known to have a congenital asymmetry, but a heart defect, which decisively affected the course of delivery, had been undiagnosed up to that time. Secondary caesarean section was necessary for fetal and maternal indications. In women with congenital hemihypertrophy or hemihypotrophy (Silver-Russel syndrome), any associated malformations should be ruled out prior to pregnancy.

Here, we present a highly regioselective chalcogenation of pyridines, pyrimidines, and isoquinolines using readily available dichalcogenides. This transformation operates under simple conditions, tolerates a wide range of functional groups, and renders these processes applicable to the late-stage functionalization of drugs. Preliminary mechanistic studies indicated that a single-electron transfer (SET) pathway is likely involved in this chalcogenation reaction.

A simple electrochemical method has been proposed for the preparation of silver nanoparticles that can be used for the detection of cyanide. Both the electrochemical behavior and morphology of the Ag nanoparticles have been characterized in the presence of KCN or diethyl cyanophosphonate (DECP) as well as in alkaline media. These were investigated by cyclic voltammetry and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). DECP is a simulant of the chemical warfare agent tabun.

Silver sulfadiazine cream is a topical antibacterial agent that combines the antibacterial effects of both silver and sulfadiazine. Its reported cutaneous side effects include hypersensitivity reactions, allergic contact dermatitis, erythema multiforme, and systemic argyria. We report the case of a patient who had localized argyria develop in a scar after the use of silver sulfadiazine cream. In this case, the silver sulfadiazine cream was applied to and argyria developed within a postsurgical wound and area of severe contact dermatitis.

A total of 49 consecutive patients with lesions of the oral mucosa that were in contact with corroding dental amalgam restorations were subdivided into two groups. Silver sulphadiazine has been used as a topical antimicrobial agent in a large group of children with burns and scalds. Four developed neutropenia and two an erythema multiforme rash which were thought to be due to sulphadiazine sensitivity. To assess the extent of sulphadiazine absorption in children, the urinary excretion was measured in a group of 8 patients with a mean area of injury of 13 per cent BSA. The mean urinary concentration of sulphadiazine was 31.8 mg/l.
