INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Restoring lost teeth in the posterior atrophic maxilla presents a significant challenge due to insufficient bone volume for implant placement. Simultaneous implant placement during lateral sinus lift is often considered, but the decision is typically based on the amount of existing bone. The aim of this study was to investigate the feasibility of simultaneous implant placement and maxillary sinus floor augmentation in the atrophic posterior maxilla using autogenous bone ring.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 58-year-old man presented with teeth loss in the posterior upper jaw…

INTRODUCTION: Branches of the posterior superior artery (PSA) are often found within the lateral wall of the maxillary sinus. Most vessels are small and laceration of the blood vessel during sinus augmentation is not uncommon. Such lacerations can result in intra-surgical bleeding complicating the augmentation procedure, otherwise they are typically non-life threatening. The purpose of the present case report is to document a maxillary sinus floor augmentation procedure involving displacement of large artery from its bony canal using a piezoelectric device.
CASE PRESENTATION: A maxillary sinu…

BACKGROUND: During implant treatment in the maxillary molar area, maxillary sinus floor augmentation is often performed to ameliorate the reduced alveolar bone height attributable to bone remodeling and pneumatization-induced expansion of the maxillary sinus. However, this augmentation may cause complications such as misplaced implants, artery damage, and maxillary sinus mucosal perforation; infections like maxillary sinusitis; and postsurgical complications such as bone graft leakage and postoperative nasal hemorrhaging. To reduce the complications during maxillary sinus floor augmentation an…

This study aimed to collectively synthesize the available evidence on the effect of alveolar ridge preservation at the posterior maxilla in reducing maxillary sinus pneumatization after tooth extraction, and the necessity of sinus floor augmentation during implant placement. Database search, along with additional screening in the grey literature were conducted, to find clinical studies where ridge preservation was performed in the posterior maxilla, and was compared with normal healing. Eleven studies were included, with 185 and 203 sites for the test and control groups, respectively. Ridge pr…

Although augmentation of the maxillary sinus floor with autogenous bone grafts has become a well established preimplantology procedure, its effect on the function of the maxillary sinus has not been the subject of prospective human studies. In this prospective study the effects of sinus floor augmentation on maxillary sinus performance were evaluated. Seventeen consecutive patients who were to undergo augmentation of the maxillary sinus floor with an iliac crest autogenous bone graft agreed to participate in this study. All patients were subject to (i) extensive anamnestic and clinical investi…

One of the most challenging and technically sensitive surgical procedures in conjunction with dental implant rehabilitation is sinus membrane lifting to increase the bone height or volume from the maxillary sinus floor. This important preprosthetic surgical technique has been available for >15 years, making possible the creation of bone volume in the edentulous posterior maxilla for the placement of dental implants in surgically compromised cases. Substantial literature exists regarding the most efficacious way to increase the predictability of this surgical procedure, and reduce its associate

Maxillary sinus floor augmentation (MSFA) is one of the most predictable hard tissue augmentation procedures performed to support long-term dental implant survival and success. However, risks and complications still exist with this procedure including pain, bleeding, infection, oroantral communication, and inadequate bone regeneration for implant placement. To decrease some of these potential complications and improve outcomes, biologics are becoming more widely used in maxillary sinus augmentation. Autologous blood concentrates (ABCs) can be utilized as a membrane to seal a sinus membrane per…

Although the lateral window approach allows for greater graft material delivery and bone formation, it is more challenging and invasive, prompting keen interest among dentists to master this method. YouTube is increasingly used for medical training; however, concerns regarding the quality of instructional videos exist. This study proposes new criteria for evaluating YouTube videos on maxillary sinus elevation with the aim of establishing standards for assessing instructional content in the field. We sourced 100 maxillary sinus elevation videos from YouTube and, following exclusion criteria, an

BACKGROUND: Outside-in frontal drill out entails drilling the frontal sinus floor in the midline before identifying and dissecting the frontal recesses. It is a more direct approach, especially in revision surgery or cases with challenging anatomy.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to highlight the anatomical and surgical concepts for easy and safe outside-in frontal drill out by a preclinical anatomic study on cadaveric heads. In addition, to review our experience with this approach over a 5-year period for challenging frontal sinus pathologies.
METHODS: The study included 2 sectors; a

INTRODUCTION: The Modified Osseodensification Visco-Elastic (MOVE) protocol combines two established techniques for sinus lifting: osseodensification drills to elevate the Schneiderian membrane, and the use of a viscoelastic putty to distribute forces on the membrane, a combination first described by Neiva et al. (2019). This case series elucidates the technique for combining these materials, and its possible benefits, which include reduced procedure time, less traumatic sinus elevation, and more versatility for unusual sinus anatomy, such as sloped sinus floors and immediate implant sites.

Maxillary sinus augmentation is a procedure commonly performed in patients in need of posterior maxillary implants with limited vertical ridge height and sinus pneumatization. However, minimal information has been presented to evaluate the complexity of the sinus elevation procedure via a lateral window approach based on patient examination, including extraoral findings, anatomical factors, and the possible influence from the surgeon's experience. Therefore, this article presents a new scheme of maxillary sinus floor elevation difficulty score based on comprehensive patient- and surgical-relat
