Effects of leg activity and ambient barometric pressure on foot swelling and lower-limb skin temperature during 8 h of sitting.

Prolonged immobilization in an upright position often leads to discomfort and oedema in the feet of otherwise healthy subjects. To determine the significance of leg activity and ambient pressure on oedema formation, skin temperature (Tsk) and discomfort, 6 volunteers sat for 8 h with one leg immobilized and the other spontaneously active; one day at "sea level" (750 mmHg) and one day at reduced barometric pressure (540 mmHg). Foot swelling was measured by water plethysmography. Leg movements were continuously monitored by a Vitalog computer, and foot discomfort was estimated by analog-visual s…

Utility of core to skin temperature gradient and capillary refill time in determining prognosis for patients with septic shock: A prospective observational study.

INTRODUCTION: Septic shock is characterized by heterogeneous microcirculatory alterations that may contribute to organ hypoperfusion and eventual death. The microcirculatory alteration can manifest in various clinical indicators, such as the core-to-skin temperature gradient (CSTG) and capillary refill time (CRT), reflecting the microcirculatory state. This prospective observational study explored the prognostic significance of the CSTG and CRT in septic shock. METHODS: The study involved 54 patients over 18 months. The primary objective was to investigate the association between the CSTG mea…

Skin Temperature Circadian Rhythms and Dysautonomia in Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: The Role of Endothelin-1 in the Vascular Tone Dysregulation.

There is accumulating evidence of autonomic dysfunction in myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS); however, little is known about its association with circadian rhythms and endothelial dysfunction. This study aimed to explore the autonomic responses through an orthostatic test and analysis of the peripheral skin temperature variations and vascular endothelium state in ME/CFS patients. Sixty-seven adult female ME/CFS patients and 48 healthy controls were enrolled. Demographic and clinical characteristics were assessed using validated self-reported outcome measures. Postural…

Evaluation of high resolution thermal imaging to determine the effect of vertebral fractures on associated skin surface temperature in children with osteogenesis imperfecta.

Vertebral fractures are common in children with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI). Current imaging methods for fracture detection (X-ray and DXA) use ionising radiation. This pilot study explored whether the alteration in blood flow in vertebral fractures results in skin temperature changes that may be detected using high resolution thermal imaging (HRTI) and thus assist diagnosis and monitoring of fractures in OI patients. Eleven participants aged 5-18 years with OI and known vertebral fractures were enrolled. Small metal discs were placed on the skin surface alongside the vertebrae before partici…

Is there a difference between the effects of one-point and three-point indirect moxibustion stimulation on skin temperature changes of the posterior trunk surface?

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether any difference exists in responses to indirect moxibustion relative to thermal stimulation sites. METHODS: Twenty one healthy men of mean±SD age 22.5±6.1 years were randomly divided into two groups, one receiving a single moxibustion stimulation in three locations (the three-point stimulation group, n=10 participants) and the other receiving three stimulations in one location (the one-point stimulation group, n=11 participants). The thermal stimulation sites were GV14, GV9 and GV4 acupuncture points. A thermograph was used to obtain the skin temperature on the …

Is it possible to decrease skin temperature with ice packs under casts and bandages? A cross-sectional, randomized trial on normal and swollen ankles.

INTRODUCTION: There is a general belief that the presence of a cast or a bandage eliminates the lowering effects of skin temperature when local cold therapy applied on the surface of the cast or bandage. The purpose of this study is to determine the magnitude of temperature changes at the skin of the ankle after the application of frozen ice packs to the surface of various casts and bandages both in normal and swollen ankles. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-two healthy subjects (Group A) and 12 patients with Grade III inversion type acute ankle sprain (Group B) were randomly divided into four g…

The effects of continuous axillary brachial plexus block with ropivacaine infusion on skin temperature and survival of crushed fingers after microsurgical replantation.

BACKGROUND: Continuous axillary brachial plexus block with local anesthetic has been shown to improve tissue perfusion after replantation surgery of the extremity. The present study aimed to investigate whether continuous axillary brachial plexus block with ropivacaine infusion can improve the survival of the reconstructive fingers secondary to an increase in its skin temperature in patients receiving replantation surgery of the crushed fingers. METHODS: Under general anesthesia, 18 patients received replantation or toe-to-hand transplantation of their crushed digits. They were randomly divid…

The value of skin temperature measurements in forecasting the healing of a below-knee amputation for end-stage ischaemia of the leg in peripheral vascular disease.

In order to forecast the healing of a Burgess type below-knee amputation the skin temperature of the leg has been studied before operation in 39 instances using infra-red thermography in a 26 degrees C environment. Healing bore no relation to the mean skin temperature of the calf or that of the skin at the site of the anterior incision. However, when the skin temperature at the site of the incision for the long posterior flap was greater than 30.4 degrees C or when the ratio of the temperatures at the posterior and anterior incision sites (P/A) was greater than 0.98 healing was significantly m…

Agreement between automated ThermoHuman® and manual thermographic analyses for assessing lower-limb skin temperatures before and after running.

Although different studies are using ThermoHuman software to delimitate regions of interest (ROI) of lower limbs, no study has validated this automatic analysis. This work evaluated the level of agreement and time efficiency of the automated ThermoHuman software compared with manual determination of the regions of interest in assessing lower-limb skin temperature before and after exercise. Seventy-six thermographic images from 19 recreational runners (10 males, 9 females) were analyzed before and after a 10-km outdoor run. Automated analysis using ThermoHuman was compared with Manual analysis …

Pre-clinical evaluation of a low-cost tool for skin temperature measurements as a proxy to assess autonomic nerve function in leprosy neuropathy.

Peripheral autonomic nerve function (ANF) impairment (ANFI) can be one of the first indicators for leprosy or leprosy neuropathy. However, within leprosy, hardly any ANF assessment methods are used in current practice. Skin temperature could be a proxy measure to assess ANF. Therefore, this research aims to explore whether low-cost infrared (IR) video thermography can be used as an ANF assessment tool by measuring the skin temperature response (STR) of human hands before, and after applying a cold pressor test (CPT). A protocol was defined to perform a baseline measurement, apply CPT, and reco…

Retinyl palmitate-loaded nanostructured lipid carriers prepared by the phase inversion temperature method: Physicochemical properties, in vitro skin permeation, and occlusion ability.

Nanostructured lipid carriers (NLCs) have emerged as a promising approach to improve the stability and dermal delivery of retinyl palmitate (RP), a widely used anti-ageing ingredient. This study developed RP-loaded NLCs using the phase inversion temperature method for topical delivery. In this study, RP was encapsulated into NLCs prepared by the phase inversion temperature method. The optimised formulation comprised 2% polysorbate 20, a 5:5 ratio of glyceryl monostearate to cetyl palmitate, and a 6:4 solid-to-liquid lipid ratio. The resulting RP-NLCs displayed favourable physicochemical proper

Relationship between Skin Temperature, Electrical Manifestations of Muscle Fatigue, and Exercise-Induced Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness for Dynamic Contractions: A Preliminary Study.

Delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) indicates the presence of muscle damage and impairs force production and control. Monitorization of DOMS is useful to improving recovery intervention plans. The magnitude of DOMS may relate to muscle fatigue, which can be monitored by surface electromyography (EMG). Additionally, growing interest has been expressed in determining whether the skin temperature over a muscle group during exercise to fatigue could be a non-invasive marker for DOMS. Here we determine whether skin temperature and manifestations of muscle fatigue during exercise are correlated and…

Thermal Infrared Imaging Can Differentiate Skin Temperature Changes Associated With Intense Single Leg Exercise, But Not With Delayed Onset of Muscle Soreness.

Muscle damage and soreness associated with increased exercise training loads or unaccustomed activity can be debilitating and impact the quality of subsequent activity/performance. Current techniques to assess muscle soreness are either time consuming, invasive or subjective. Infrared thermography has been identified as a quick, non-invasive, portable and athlete friendly method of assessing skin temperature. This study assessed the capability of thermal infrared imaging to detect skin temperature changes that may accompany the inflammatory response associated with delayed onset muscular soren…
