Phase Angle is Determined by Body Composition and Cardiorespiratory Fitness in Adolescents.

The phase angle is used to evaluate nutritional status and is an indicator of cellular health. Cardiorespiratory fitness and body composition are strong indicators of health during adolescence. We aimed to evaluate if body composition and cardiorespiratory fitness have an association with phase angle among adolescents. 203 girls and 220 boys (12.8±1.3 years) were evaluated. Peak height velocity, percentage fat mass, fat-free mass, cardiorespiratory fitness, and phase angle measurements were collected. Linear regression adjusted by peak height velocity was used to verify if predictor variables

Age, training, and previous experience predict race performance in long-distance inline skaters, not anthropometry.

The association of characteristics of anthropometry, training, and previous experience with race time in 84 recreational, long-distance, inline skaters at the longest inline marathon in Europe (111 km), the Inline One-eleven in Switzerland, was investigated to identify predictor variables for performance. Age, duration per training unit, and personal best time were the only three variables related to race time in a multiple regression, while none of the 16 anthropometric variables were related. Anthropometric characteristics seem to be of no importance for a fast race time in a long-distance i

Interferon-gamma is involved in photoimmunoprotection by UVA (320-400 nm) radiation in mice.

Ultraviolet B radiation not only inflicts tumor-initiating DNA damage, but also impairs T cell-mediated immunity relevant to survival of the initiated cells. We have reported, however, that ultraviolet A radiation, in contrast, is immunologically innocuous in hairless mice and opossums, but renders the animals resistant to the immunosuppression by ultraviolet B, or its mediator cis-urocanic acid. Ultraviolet B irradiation of skin causes abundant release of numerous cytokines (interleukin-1, interleukin-6, interleukin-10, tumor necrosis factor-alpha); notably interleukin-12 and interferon-gamma

Relationships of Schistosoma haematobium, hookworm and malarial infections and metrifonate treatment to growth of Kenyan school children.

Relationships of S. haematobium, hookworm and malarial infections to growth 6 months after metrifonate treatment were studied in Kenyan primary school children in an area where poor growth, S. haematobium and hookworm were common and malaria was endemic. All children with light-moderate S. haematobium infections (1-500 eggs/10 ml adj) in 4 schools were examined (Exam 1), allocated at random to either placebo (MIP, n = 198) or metrifonate treatment (MIT, n = 201) groups, treated, and examined again 6 months later (Exam 2). An additional 19 heavily infected children (HIT group greater than 500 e

[Nutrition studies in the mid valley of Senegal. 2. Nutritional health of the population and its trends].

A nutritional survey performed in the Senegal mid valley in 1983 including 610 individuals shows that mild to moderate protein-energy malnutrition, specific deficiencies and anemia are still present. In addition new health hazards such as overweight and perhaps high blood pressure, raise and may burden public health welfare in that area.

Enteral nutrition in surgical patients.

BACKGROUND: Malnutrition is common in patients admitted for surgery and is a major cause of increased morbidity and mortality. Nutritional support has been shown to be of help in reducing complications. Parenteral nutrition and commercially available enteral diets are expensive, so the efficacy of a 'home-brew' enteral diet was studied in such patients. METHODS: Forty malnourished patients, 20 with benign disease and 20 with malignancy, were administered a 'home-brew' enteral diet (1140 calories and 60 g protein per litre) perioperatively for 14 days. They received 2500 to 4000 calories per d

Childhood adiposity and fertility difficulties: the Bogalusa Heart Study.

BACKGROUND: Adult obesity is associated with infertility; however, childhood obesity has received little consideration. OBJECTIVES: The present study sought to evaluate the impact of childhood adiposity on fertility. METHODS: Associations between childhood adiposity and self-reported fertility difficulties were estimated among women participating in a long-term study of cardiovascular risks and reproductive health (n = 1061). RESULTS: Participants with obesity between ages 9 and 12 were more likely to report fertility difficulties (adjusted relative risk [aRR], 1.82, 95% CI 1.17-2.82) and i

Effect of topical vitamin D analogue on in vivo contact sensitization.

BACKGROUND: The immunomodulatory role of vitamin D and its analogues has been demonstrated in vitro and in vivo using animal models. We evaluated the effect of a vitamin D analogue, calcipotriene, in vivo on human subjects using a contact hypersensitivity model. OBSERVATIONS: Subjects were pretreated with topical calcipotriene, simulated solar radiation, or both on buttock skin. They were then sensitized and challenged using the contact allergen dinitrochlorobenzene. Immune response was measured by change in skinfold thickness before vs after elicitation across the challenge sites. CONCLUSIO

Loss of body weight and fat during exercise in a cold chamber.

Ten men spent one week in a cold climatic facility performing a simulated arctic military exercise demanding an energy expenditure of 13-16 MJ-day-1. Although the ration pack was adequate, extensive plate wastage led to a negative energy balance of 2.2 MJ-day-1. Fluid intake was also insufficient, with a 3.25% decrease of body weight, and a 9.7% decrease in skin thickness over the cold exposure. Extensive fat mobilization was indicated by a decrease of skinfold thicknesses, an increase of body density, and associated ketonuria and glycosuria. The fat breakdown far exceeded the calculated energ

Short Malnourished Children and Fat Accumulation With Food Supplementation.

BACKGROUND: In moderate acute malnutrition programs, it is common practice to not measure mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) of children whose length is <67 cm. This is based on expert opinion that supplementation of shorter children with low MUAC and weight-for-height z score ≥-2 may increase risk of excessive fat accumulation. Our aim was to assess if shorter children gain more fat than taller children when treated for moderate acute malnutrition diagnosed by low MUAC alone. METHODS: In this observational study, we included children aged 6 to 23 months with a MUAC between 115 and 125 mm and

An effective lifestyle intervention in overweight children: one-year follow-up after the randomized controlled trial on "Obeldicks light".

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Lifestyle interventions address primarily obese children, while interventions tailored to overweight but not obese children are scarce. The effectiveness of the lifestyle intervention "Obeldicks light" based on physical activity training, nutrition education, and behavior counseling for overweight children and their parents has been demonstrated by a randomized controlled trial. Here, we present the 12 months follow-up analysis of these children after end of intervention. METHODS: Degree of overweight (BMI and SDS-BMI), waist circumference, skinfold thickness, bioimpedance

Low plasma vitamin B12 in pregnancy is associated with gestational 'diabesity' and later diabetes.

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: This study was designed to test the hypothesis that low plasma vitamin B(12) concentrations combined with high folate concentrations in pregnancy are associated with a higher incidence of gestational diabetes (GDM) and later diabetes. METHODS: Women (N = 785) attending the antenatal clinics of one hospital in Mysore, India, had their anthropometry, insulin resistance (homeostasis model assessment-2) and glucose tolerance assessed at 30 weeks' gestation (100 g oral glucose tolerance test; Carpenter-Coustan criteria) and at 5 years after delivery (75 g OGTT; WHO, 1999). Cross-cultural correlations of childhood growth and adult breast cancer.

International differences in breast cancer incidence and mortality, and studies on Japanese migrants to the United States, point to the importance of environmental factors, including diet and nutrition, in the etiology of breast cancer. Some studies have suggested that dietary patterns in early life are important to the long-term risk of breast cancer. Given that human growth is partially a function of early dietary intake, cross-cultural correlations between breast cancer rates and anthropometric variables measured at different times in childhood provide additional information about the assoc

Aerobic and anaerobic exercise capacities in obstructive sleep apnea and associations with subcutaneous fat distributions.

Obesity is a strong risk factor for the development and progression of sleep apnea. Responses to exercise by patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) are clinically relevant to reducing body weight and cardiovascular risk factors. This study aimed to clarify the aerobic and anaerobic exercise capacities and their possible relationships with other findings in patients with OSAS. Forty patients (30 males, 10 females) and 40 controls (30 males, 10 females) were enrolled in this study. Questionnaires (excessive daytime sleepiness, daytime tiredness, morning headache, waking unrefreshe

Assessing malnutrition in gastric carcinoma: bioelectrical impedance or clinical impression?

The value of bioelectrical impedance (BI) as an index of body composition was assessed in 32 patients with gastric carcinoma, 20 with advanced disease. Bioelectrical impedance was compared with standard nutritional parameters: weight, body mass index (BMI), albumin, transferrin and triceps skinfold thickness. There was no correlation between BI and these parameters with the exception of weight and BMI in the male patients. Clinical assessment of nutrition on the other hand correlated well with the standard parameters. Although BI may be a useful adjunct to the routine assessment of nutritional

Rapid correction of wasting in children with cerebral palsy.

Severe cerebral palsy is often accompanied by wasting. The authors used standard methods for the correction of primary protein energy malnutrition in children with severe cerebral palsy. A randomised controlled trial was used to compare intensive nasogastric tube-feeding with the best oral feeding that could be achieved. Nasogastric feeding led to highly significant increases in weight. The changes in skinfold thickness and mid-arm muscle circumference indicated increases in both lean and fat tissue. This study indicates that wasting associated with cerebral palsy can be quickly corrected, so
