Embryogenesis of the gingival cyst.

The embryogenesis of gingival cysts derived from the dental lamina was studied histologically in paraffin prepared sections of 10 pairs of human fetal jaws and in individual celloidin sections of human fetal skulls. Cystic degeneration in the dental lamina was noted as early as 10 weeks in utero prior to the separation of the developing tooth bud. Rapid proliferation and growth of such cysts was seen in 15-20 week old embryos during the morphodifferentiation stage of tooth development after fragmentation of the lamina had occurred. Islands, strands and nests of dental lamina epithelium were di

Rare giant cell tumour of the left parieto-occipital skull in an 8-year-old female patient: a case report.

Giant cell tumor (GCT) of bone is a generally benign but locally aggressive neoplasm that most commonly affects the epiphysis of long bones in young adults, while involvement of the cranial bones is exceedingly rare, particularly in the pediatric population. Calvarial GCTs pose significant diagnostic challenges because their clinical and radiologic features overlap with other lytic skull lesions. We report a rare case of a pediatric giant cell tumor arising from the calvarium that presented with progressive scalp swelling and localized pain. Radiologic evaluation demonstrated an expansile oste

Metatypical Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma: A Variant Showing Prominent Squamous Differentiation With a Predilection for the Sinonasal Tract and Skull Base.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma is a malignant salivary gland neoplasm, commonly involving the major and minor salivary glands. Adenoid cystic carcinoma arising in the skull base region is considerably less common and is characterized by aggressive clinical behavior, perineural invasion, and intracranial extension. Classically, these tumors are composed of ductal and myoepithelial cells, arranged as tubules and cribriform structures, as well as in a solid pattern when higher in grade. The distinctive molecular findings in this tumor are the gene fusions involving the MYB/MYBL1 and NFIB genes. Squamou

Craniofacial Manifestations of Systemic Disorders: CT and MR Imaging Findings and Imaging Approach.

Many systemic diseases or conditions can affect the maxillofacial bones; however, they are often overlooked or incidentally found at routine brain or head and neck imaging performed for other reasons. Early identification of some conditions may significantly affect patient care and alter outcomes. Early recognition of nonneoplastic hematologic disorders, such as thalassemia and sickle cell disease, may help initiate earlier treatment and prevent serious complications. The management of neoplastic diseases such as lymphoma, leukemia, or Langerhans cell histiocytosis may be different if diagnose

Atypical osteomyelitis of the skull base and craniovertebral junction caused by Actinomyces infection--case report.

A 44-year-old man presented with a very rare case of skull base osteomyelitis manifesting as persistent diplopia. He initially had the symptom with fever after dental extraction. Biopsy from the cervix and upper pharynx performed in a previous hospital had showed negative findings by histological and bacterial examinations. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging disclosed enhanced lesions in the right cavernous sinus, clivus, and right cervical regions. Computed tomography revealed osteolysis, and fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) showed areas of increased uptake. Bacteriologi

18F-FDG PET/CT Findings in an Infant With Multisystem ALK-Positive Histiocytosis.

ALK-positive histiocytosis is a rare histiocytic neoplasm seen predominantly in infants and children and may present as single-system or multisystem disease, often with neurologic involvement. We report a 5-month-old girl with pancytopenia and hepatosplenomegaly whose whole-body 18F-FDG PET/CT demonstrated intensely FDG-avid disseminated disease involving the brain, left parapharyngeal/skull-base region, lungs, liver, pancreas, kidneys, cervix/lower uterine body with vaginal extension, vulva, soft tissues, muscle, spinal canal region, and skeleton. Published FDG PET/CT descriptions of ALK-posi

Benign osteoblastoma of the mandible: a case report.

Osteoblastoma is a rare benign neoplasm formed by osteoid tissue and well-vascularized bone that occurs mainly in children and adolescents. It appears primarily in the long bones, vertebral column, and small bones of the hands and feet, and not typically in the skull and maxillary bones. The purpose of this study is to present the case of an 8-year-old girl with a diagnosis of right mandibular osteoblastoma and a review of the relevant literature. The goals of treatment were to preserve dental occlusion, masticatory function and facial symmetry while minimizing the effects on patient body imag

[Langerhans histiocytosis and panhypopituitarism in adults. Case report].

Langerhans-cells Histiocytosis (LCH) is a rare disease characterized by the clonal proliferation of immature dendritic cells that locally or diffusely infiltrate different systems, mainly affecting children. We present the case of a 38-year-old man with a long-standing history of multiple tooth loss without association with trauma, smoking, or poor dental hygiene. Skull computed tomography (CT) showed multiple lytic jaw lesions. Jaw biopsy and immunohistochemical results were compatible with the finding of LCH. The patient evolved with polyuria, polydipsia, and nocturia, confirming the presenc

Malignant extra-adrenal pelvic paraganglioma in a paediatric patient.

The extra-adrenal paraganglioma is a neoplasm originating in regional structures, uncommon in paediatrics. We report on a case of a 13-year-old patient who began with severe arterial hypertension, tachycardia, dilated cardiomyopathy and elevated levels of catecholamines in the blood and urine. The presence of a retrovesical pelvic mass in contact with the right vaginal dome was determined by imaging studies. A diagnosis of malignant extra-adrenal pelvic paraganglioma with lymph node metastases was reached through biopsy and the surgical resection of subsequent local recurrences. Paragangliomas

Proteus syndrome.

Proteus syndrome is a rare sporadic, hamartoneoplastic disorder of vascular, skeletal, and soft tissues that causes asymmetry of the skull, body, arms, and the legs. The name "Proteus" of the Greek god who had the ability to change his shape was coined to define the variety of deformities including partial gigantism of the hands or feet, asymmetry of the arms and legs, hypertrophy of long bones, plantar hyperplasia, haemangiomas, lipomas, varicosities, linear verrucous epidermal naevi, macrocephaly, and cranial hyperostoses. The basic defect seems to be the focal overgrowth of cellular element

Diffuse Meningiomatosis without Neurofibromatosis: A Rare Diagnosis with Atypical Presentation.

Meningiomas are amongst the most common neoplasms of the central nervous system; however, "multiple meningiomas" or "meningiomatosis" account for < 10% of cases. The association with neurofibromatosis 2 is seen in ∼50% of cases. We report a case of 35-year-old female patient who presented with left eye proptosis, left forehead swelling, and multiple cranial nerve palsies predominantly on the left side. Imaging evaluation revealed innumerable en plaque meningiomas forming a sheet-like nodular thickening along the dura, causing marked hyperostosis and extending into the orbits, cavernous sinuses

Gastrointestinal spindle cell tumor of the rumen with metastasis to the liver in a goat.

Many neoplasms have been reported in goats; however, neoplasia of the rumen is rarely reported. A 9-y-old castrated male pygmy goat was presented with a history of respiratory stertor, fever, and anorexia. A respiratory diagnostic work-up including skull and thorax radiographs and endoscopy revealed minor enlargement of the arytenoids but no other abnormal findings. After a month of little improvement on symptomatic treatment and worsening general health, the goat was euthanized. On autopsy, the forestomachs, liver, spleen, diaphragm, and the ventral and lateral aspects of the cranial third of

Collet-Sicard syndrome secondary to a large glomus jugulotympanicum.

Collet-Sicard syndrome is caused by various neoplastic and non-neoplastic lesions affecting the base of the skull with involvement of IX, X, XI and XII cranial nerves. Paraganglioma accounts for < 1% of all the neoplasms in the head and neck region. They are traditionally considered as benign, slow growing, locally invasive, encapsulated and highly vascular tumors. We report a case of Collet-Sicard syndrome secondary to a large glomus jugulotympanicum in a 45-year-old woman who presented to the emergency department with complaints of recurrent episodes of a fresh bleeding from the left ear for

Lateral sellar angiolipomas: a therapeutic challenge. Our experience on two cases and review of the literature.

Angiolipomas are rare benign mesenchymal tumours, most commonly found in the subcutaneous tissue of the extremities. These neoplasms are rarely located in the central nervous system (CNS), with spinal localization being the most common in this group. Intracranial location is extremely infrequent, and only ten cases have been described in the sellar region. We report on two more patients with skull-base (intracranial) angiolipomas, the former presented with a long history of headache and the latter complained diplopia. Both patients were postoperatively verified as angiolipoma. Neuroimaging stu

Imaging of the skull base: anatomy and pathology.

The skull base is a critical landmark, separating intracranial from extracranial structures. This intricate anatomic structure has several foramina and crossing structures, which can be a challenge for novices. Comprehensive anatomic knowledge is critical for narrowing the differential diagnosis of lesions that may affect the skull base. These lesions can be divided into major categories to help in a systematic approach for skull base pathology evaluation.

[Growth disturbances of the temporomandibular joint: causes, diagnosis and treatment].

Growth disturbances of the temporomandibular Joint are characterized by mandibular asymmetry, sometimes with secondary maxillar disturbances. Although the clinical symptoms are sometimes quite severe, patients usually have no pain. There are several growth disturbances, but in this article we discuss three particular causes of facial asymmetry, namely hemimandibular growth defects; overdevelopment, underdevelopment and neoplasms of the mandibular joint. Hemimandibular overdevelopment (hyperplasia) is a growth disorder characterized by progressive asymmetry of the mandibula. Hemimandibular hypo

Endoscopic Endonasal Repair of a Persistent Craniopharyngeal Canal and Sphenoid Meningoencephalocele: Case Report and Review of Literature.

BACKGROUND: A persistent craniopharyngeal canal (PCC) is a rare cause of cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea in children. The condition often coexists with other midline facial defects, such as cleft palate. Children with PCC may also have pituitary dysfunction or neoplasms, such as craniopharyngiomas within the canal. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 5-year-old girl presented with bacterial meningitis and active cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea from her left nostril. Imaging showed a large nasopharyngeal meningoencephalocele, communicating with the subarachnoid space through a persistent craniopharyngeal canal.

Neurotologic considerations in the treatment of advanced clival tumors.

Head and neck manifestations of advanced clival tumors result from subtle, yet progressive mass effect or direct involvement of multiple cranial nerves. Misinterpretation of clinical or radiographic findings in these patients may result in inappropriate treatment planning, increased patient morbidity, and probable tumor recurrence. Our combined experience in managing 21 patients with advanced clival tumors has shown that preoperative loss of vision, diplopia, or facial hypesthesia suggests superior parasellar disease. Facial twitching or neurotologic symptoms result from posterior central tumo
