Vulvar epithelioid leiomyoma with myxoid change: A case report and literature review.

RATIONALE: Smooth muscle tumors of the vulva are infrequent neoplasms with diverse histologic features and unclear biologic behavior. Herein, we report a very rare case of vulvar epithelioid leiomyoma and review of previous reported cases of these tumors. In addition, we have discussed the representative diagnostic criteria of vulvar smooth muscle tumors and prognostic significance of epithelioid morphology. PATIENT CONCERNS: We recently met a 45-year-old woman with complaint of painful vulvar mass. INTERVENTIONS: Excisional biopsy was performed. DIAGNOSES: Pathologic examination revealed a…

A case of mediastinal angiomyolipoma.

Angiomyolipoma is a common tumor of the kidney but has rarely been found in the mediastinum. We report a case of angiomyolipoma of the posterior mediastinum in a 62-year-old woman. She experienced exertional dyspnea and intermittent cough at admission. Computed tomography indicated a tumor located at the left paravertebral and upper posterior mediastinum and MRI imaging demonstrated a mass with low signal intensity in T1-weighted image at T4-5 level. Thoracotomy was done for surgical removal of the tumor and histologic examination revealed a mesenchymal tumor composed of mature fat, capillarie

Solitary infantile myofibromatosis of bone. An immunohistochemical and ultrastructural study.

A rare case of solitary infantile myofibromatosis of bone in an 11-month-old boy is reported. Radiographically the lesion of parietal bone was round, well-circumscribed, and osteolytic with a sclerotic rim. Histologically the tumor was made up of nodules that were hyalinized or cellular and containing plump, spindle-shaped cells that were intermediate in appearance between fibroblasts and smooth-muscle cells, arranged in short bundles or whorls. Another typical feature was the presence of distended, cleft-shaped vascular spaces around the nodules. The microscopic features of this tumor were co

A leiomyomatoid angiomatous neuroendocrine tumor of the myometrium: case study with ultrastructural analysis.

Leiomyomatoid angiomatous neuroendocrine tumor (LANT) is a possible new disease entity that was described as a dimorphic neurosecretory tumor with a leiomyomatous vascular component; it was found in the pituitary. We describe here a second case of LANT in a 45-year-old woman with a myometrial tumor, diagnosed clinically as uterine leiomyoma. She underwent laparoscopic myomectomy. The tumor consisted of hyalinized vasculature, containing factor VIII-positive endothelium and smooth muscle actin-positive vascular smooth muscle cells, and stromal cells, expressing neuroadhesion molecules. Both vas

Shapeshifters in Pathology: Paratesticular Solitary Fibrous Tumor Mimicking Leiomyoma.

Solitary fibrous tumors are mesenchymal fibroblastic tumors that were originally described as intrathoracic lesions but have since been found to occur in many other locations. They may rarely occur as paratesticular masses. Here we present a peculiar case of a solitary fibrous tumor arising in the paratesticular region and exhibiting leiomyoma-like morphology. Confirmation of the tumor as a solitary fibrous tumor was achieved by RNA sequencing showing NAB2::STAT6 fusion. Possible explanations for the unusual tumor morphology include entrapment of normal smooth muscle elements and tumor differe

[Leiomyoma of tongue: a case report].

Oral leiomyoma is a benign smooth muscle tumor. Leiomyoma occurs most frequently in the uterine myometrium, gastrointestinal tract, and skin. Occurrence in the oral cavity is considered rare, probably because of the paucity of smooth muscle tissue at this area. Smooth muscle tumors can occur at any age and usually appear as a slow growing, firm submucosal nodule. Most lesions are asymptomatic, although occasional tumors can be painful. The most common sites are lips, palate and tongue. The diagnosis of leiomyoma in the oral cavity is mainly determined by histological studies. The purpose of th…

Do urinary bladder smooth muscle neoplasms show morphologic and immunophenotypic features of their uterine fumarate hydratase-deficient counterparts?

While the morphologic and immunophenotypic features of smooth muscle neoplasms of the uterus and skin have been well-described in relationship to fumarate hydratase (FH) deficiency (FHD), a potential association of urinary bladder smooth muscle tumors with FH tumor predisposition syndrome (FHTPS) has not been previously investigated. Given an index urinary bladder leiomyoma which showed some of the purported morphologic features seen in uterine FHD leiomyomas, we performed a multi-institutional search for bladder smooth muscle tumors to further evaluate a putative FHTPS association. Cases were…

Cotyledonoid leiomyoma of uterus: a case report.

The diagnosis of uterine smooth muscle tumors is usually not difficult. Occasionally, benign tumors with an unusual growth pattern may cause some diagnostic confusion for pathologists who had not experienced such a tumor before. A fifty-one year old female patient had admitted to our gynecology outpatient clinics with abnormal uterine bleeding (menorrhagia) and undergone a surgery with a diagnosis of pelvic mass. A neoplasm consisting of spindle cell nodules with prominent hydropic degeneration was observed at pathological examination. Tumor cells were positive for vimentin, desmin and smooth …

Hepatic angiomyolipoma with predominant epithelioid component: Diagnostic clues on aspiration and core needle biopsies.

Hepatic angiomyolipoma (HAML) is a rare mesenchymal neoplasm that belongs to the perivascular epithelioid tumor family. Though it is characteristically, a triphasic tumor composed of smooth muscle, blood vessels, and adipocytes, the smooth muscle cells are often epithelioid and can represent the near-entirety of the tumor. A HAML composed predominantly of epithelioid smooth muscle cells occurring in the liver presents significant diagnostic challenges as many liver tumors are composed of large epithelioid cells. Furthermore, even if the tumor is not composed predominantly of epithelioid smooth

[Metastatic leiomyoma or synchronous lesion of the uteri corpus and vulva?].

OBJECTIVE: To reveal the morphological characteristics of simultaneously diagnosed leiomyoma of the corpus uteri and vulva. SUBJECT AND METHODS: The paper describes a case of multiple uterine leiomyomas concurrent with vulvar leiomyoma in a 39-year-old patient with progressive tumor nodule growth over 2 years. Vulvar tumor was biopsied simultaneously with extirpation of the uterus; vulvar leiomyoma was removed six months later. Histological and immunohistochemical studies: such as hematoxylin and eosin staining, the expression of smooth muscle actin, desmin, and progesterone and estrogen rece

A difficult to diagnose case of low-grade endometrial stromal sarcoma with smooth muscle differentiation treated with laparoscopic surgery: A case report.

Low-grade endometrial stromal sarcoma (LGESS) is a rare uterine tumor, accounting for <1% of all uterine cancer cases. LGESS has several variations and the frequency of tumors exhibiting smooth muscle differentiation is 10-30% of LGESS cases, making such cases even rarer. The present report described the case of a patient with LGESS with smooth muscle differentiation, who was diagnosed as having uterine leiomyoma by preoperative needle biopsy and then underwent laparoscopic surgery. The patient was a 41-year-old woman. MRI findings revealed a diffusely hyperintense uterine tumor on T2-weighted

Tumors of the esophagus.

This collective review includes all available case reports of smooth muscle (stromal) tumors of the esophagus in the world literature. Compiling this review, we endeavored to examine cumulative and recently collected data of both benign and malignant esophageal smooth muscle tumors found in the literature spanning the period from 1875 to 1996, which totaled 1679 leiomyomas (LMs) and 165 leiomyosarcomas (LMSs). The peak age of occurrence of benign smooth muscle tumors in the esophagus was found to be between the ages of 30 and 59, whereas the highest frequency of malignant tumors was seen later…

Soft tissue lipoleiomyoma.

A primary tumor composed of mature adipose tissue and smooth muscle occurring in the anterior abdominal wall of a 46 yr old Filipino woman is described. The tumor was not attached to the uterus, but had an appearance similar to a uterine lipoleiomyoma. It appeared as a soft, rubbery, encapsulated 11 cm ovoid mass with a uniform, white cut surface. Histologically, there were long intersecting bundles of bland smooth muscle mixed with nests of mature fat cells. The presence of differentiated smooth muscle was confirmed by fuchsinophilia, desmin positivity and electron microscopy. The patient als

Cellular mesenchymal tumors of the uterus: a review emphasizing recent observations.

Cellular mesenchymal tumors of the uterus may be divided in 2 main groups, smooth muscle and endometrial stromal. Among the former, highly cellular leiomyoma is the classic example. This tumor is not infrequently confused with an endometrial stromal tumor due to its often yellow color and soft consistency, dense cellularity, striking vascularity, not uncommon irregular margin and even rarely association with seedling cellular leiomyomas, both mimicking the infiltration of a low-grade endometrial stromal sarcoma. Cellular intravenous leiomyomatosis can also mimic endometrial stromal sarcoma due

Leiomyosarcoma of the soft palate.

Tumors of the smooth muscles are rarely seen, as the number of smooth muscles is low within the intraoral region. Leiomyosarcoma is a type of malign tumor originating from smooth muscles. The most common regions of leiomyosarcoma of the oral cavity are the maxilla and mandible. In this article, we present a leiomyosarcoma detected in a 20-year-old male patient who was admitted to the clinic with the complaint of a mass for about three months. The mass was located in the left half of the soft palate and it was resected en bloc with the mucosa. No recurrence was observed during the two-year foll

Visceral myogenic tumors. A manifestation of HIV infection in children.

We report a primary smooth-muscle tumor of undetermined malignant potential of the liver in a child with acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). This patient represents the eighth child infected with the human immunodeficiency virus who developed a mesenchymal tumor other than Kaposi's sarcoma. All these children were younger than 10 years of age. These tumors often were histologically or clinically malignant and all but one were smooth-muscle tumors. These tumors arose exclusively in visceral organs, and the hepatobiliary, gastrointestinal, and tracheopulmonary systems were involved. Tran

Leiomyoma of the ciliary body. Report of 2 cases.

PURPOSE AND METHODS: The files of the Eye Pathology Institute contain only two cases of leiomyoma of the ciliary body. The diagnoses were re-evaluated, applying modern immunostainings. RESULTS: The tumors were composed of interlacing fascicles of spindle-shaped cells with bright eosinophilic cytoplasm and cigar-shaped nuclei. Both tumors were well-vascularized, mostly by thin, branching capillaries. Larger vessels were also seen. In one case the tumor perforated the sclera. The tumor cells reacted with the reticulum stain and the Masson trichrome and were positive for antibodies against: smoo

Renal leiomyosarcoma.

Leiomyosarcoma (LMS) is a rare malignant tumor of smooth muscle origin that generally stems from soft tissues and uterine tissue. Although, a small percentage of these may originate from the smooth muscle or vessel walls, most of which are of venous origin. Renal leiomyosarcomas may arise from the smooth muscle fibers of renal pelvis, renal capsule or renal vessels, last one is the most frequent. We report a case of renal LMS that could be originated in the renal capsule.

Magnetic resonance imaging in the diagnosis of jejunal leiomyoblastoma.

We report a case of large leiomyoblastoma of the jejunum. The sagittal views in pre-operative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) indicated that a cystic tumor with solid component was present, sequential from the small bowel. We suspected a smooth muscle tumor of the small bowel, but did not rule out the malignancy. The operative diagnosis was smooth muscle tumor of the proximal jejunum, and partial resection of the small bowel was performed. The pathological examination revealed benign leiomyoblastoma of the jejunum without metastasis. MRI contributed to the pre-operative diagnosis of the origi…
