The utility of wearable devices in assessing ambulatory impairments of people with multiple sclerosis in free-living conditions.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a progressive inflammatory and neurodegenerative disease of the central nervous system affecting over 2.5 million people globally. In-clinic six-minute walk test (6MWT) is a widely used objective measure to evaluate the progression of MS. Yet, it has limitations such as the need for a clinical visit and a proper walkway. The widespread use of wearable devices capable of depicting patients' activity profiles has the potential to assess the level of MS-induced disability in free-living conditions. METHODS: In this work, we extracted 96 featu

Estimating disability prevalence and disability-related inequalities: Does the choice of measure matter?

RATIONALE: Different measures for quantifying the percentage of people with a disability in surveys result in diverging estimates of prevalence and disability-related inequalities. Thus understanding the implications of using different disability measures is of vital policy importance. This study is the first to investigate the within-survey variation in disability prevalence based on two internationally recognized measures: the Washington Group Short Set (WGSS) and the Global Activity Limitation Indicator (GALI). It is also the first to examine the disability-related inequality in voter turno

Trends in inequalities in disability in Europe between 2002 and 2017.

BACKGROUND: Monitoring socioeconomic inequalities in population health is important in order to reduce them. We aim to determine if educational inequalities in Global Activity Limitation Indicator (GALI) disability have changed between 2002 and 2017 in Europe (26 countries). METHODS: We used logistic regression to quantify the annual change in disability prevalence by education, as well as the annual change in prevalence difference and ratio, both for the pooled sample and each country, as reported in the European Union Statistics on Income and Living Conditions (EU-SILC) and the European Soc

The Impact of Micro and Macro Level Factors on the Working and Living Conditions of Migrant Care Workers in Italy and Israel-A Scoping Review.

Background: The provision of home-based care for frail older adults in Italy and Israel is predominately provided by live-in migrant care workers (MCWs). However, despite the important role that they play in filling the demand for home care, MCWs often experience labor rights violations. This not only impacts the well-being of MCWs but also leads to lower-quality care being provided to people in need of support. Method: This scoping review used Arksey and O'Malley's methodological framework to map literature. This article aims to analyze the scope, main topics, themes and gaps in the existing

[Urban space, war and social diseases: the case of infantile trachoma in Valencia,1936-1937].

From late 1937 on, there was a resurgence in Spain of endemic diseases such as trachoma. This disease had been controlled since the beginning of the twentieth century, especially during the Second Republic (1931-1936); however, the decline in living conditions and the population displacements during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) facilitated the resurgence of endemic trachoma. This article seeks to analyze the consequences of the Civil War on the struggle against infantile trachoma in Valencia, a city in the rearguard of the Republican zone in which poverty and overcrowding appeared suddenl

[Biological ad social characteristics of infants who died from pneumonia in the Metropolitan Region of Chile, 1995].

In order to determine the biological, sociocultural, and health-care characteristics associated with deaths from pneumonia among infants, this study used cases and controls to obtain quantitative information from a semistructured questionnaire given to those infants' mothers and to 28 doctors (15 who headed inpatient services and 13 who directed outpatient services). The cases were defined as children under 1 year of age who had died from pneumonia in 1995 in the Metropolitan Region of Chile (Greater Santiago). The controls were 118 children who survived after being hospitalized with pneumonia

Protracted Indian monsoon droughts of the past millennium and their societal impacts.

Protracted droughts lasting years to decades constitute severe threats to human welfare across the Indian subcontinent. Such events are, however, rare during the instrumental period (ca. since 1871 CE). In contrast, the historic documentary evidence indicates the repeated occurrences of protracted droughts in the region during the preinstrumental period implying that either the instrumental observations underestimate the full spectrum of monsoon variability or the historic accounts overestimate the severity and duration of the past droughts. Here we present a temporally precise speleothem-base

William Wilde's census of the deaf: a 19th century report as a model for the 21st century.

Sir William Robert Willis Wilde (1815-1876) made many contributions to otology. Perhaps his greatest, and the one least appreciated, was his performing, analyzing, and reporting of the 1851 census of the deaf of Ireland. He is the first to recognize and document genetic deafness as a major cause in early-onset deafness. His census techniques used trained enumerators, and for each family suspected as having a deaf person, a physician was sent who, before obtaining the very detailed family and medical history, was required to obtain an informed consent. Wilde's career is analyzed to show how his

[Epilepsy caused by cysticercosis. Apropos of a sociological and cultural investigation conducted at Savalou in Benin].

Neurocysticercosis has been detected at Savalou, place situated in the center of Bénin. The prevalence of epilepsy was 1.52% (22 out of 1443) and of cysticercosis, 3.95% (57 out of 1443). It was then necessary to appreciate the socio-cultural and environmental dimension which could explain the propagation of the disease and to look for contingent durable and adapted solutions for its eradication. The collect of information has been done through observation of the environment, interviews and group-discussions. A sample of 104 persons has been obtained through a probation at three degrees. Social crisis and epidemic disease in the famines of nineteenth-century India.

The onset of famine in nineteenth-century India resulted in the breakdown of normal social relations and produced a series of often dysfunctional behavioural responses. Survival strategies like the use of 'famine foods' and migration in search of food and work facilitated the spread of such epidemic diseases as cholera, dysentery, malaria, and smallpox. Although many of these diseases are not normally thought of as having a synergistic relationship with malnutrition and hunger, they were linked to it (as the Madras famine of 1876-78 illustrates) through abnormal social and environmental condit

Empowering physicians to respond to domestic violence.

Despite the progress of the last 15 years in combating family violence, some individuals, community agencies and institutions still support a man's "right" to control, and they often disregard the physical violence he uses. Because threats and assault are in fact against the law, a man who physically or sexually assaults his wife or girlfriend couldn't keep doing it without this support from the very people who are supposed to enforce the law and help the victims of crime-namely, police, prosecutors, judges, clergy, psychologists, social workers and doctors. Some let him get away with it, look

Parametric investigation of social place preference in adolescent mice.

Social interaction promotes survival by helping animals to form stable and supportive groups. Additionally, maladaptive social behavior is a hallmark of disorders such as autism and schizophrenia. In many different animal species, including humans, social interaction can be inherently rewarding. Lately there has been growing interest in studying the neurobiological underpinnings of social interaction and learned social behavior in rodent behavioral models. One common procedure is conditioned place preference (CPP) to measure the rewarding effects of social interaction and social reward learnin

The Influence of Social and Psychological Factors on Cognition Among Liver Transplant Recipients.

IntroductionCognitive impairment in liver transplant recipients can lead to poor health outcomes, and identifying at-risk individuals is important to provide timely support. Poor social conditions, including poor socioeconomic status and lack of social support, have been suggested as potential contributors to cognitive impairment. Further, individuals with poor social conditions may experience psychological symptoms, such as depression and anxiety, which can further affect cognition.AimThis preliminary study explored longitudinal associations between social conditions, depression and anxiety s…
