Peer pressure and thai amateur golfers' gambling on their games: the mediating effect of golf self-efficacy.

Our study hypothesizes that Thai amateur golfers gamble on their game because of peer pressure and their golf self-efficacy. To support our hypothesis, we conducted a study to examine the mediating effect of golf self-efficacy on the peer pressure-golf gambling relationship among 387 amateur golfers in Thailand. Peer pressure was operationally defined as fellow players' influence on the individual golfer to gamble; golf self-efficacy as the judgment of the golfer's skills to play golf; and golf gambling as the frequency and amounts of gambling. Regression analysis with bootstrapping was used t

The use of anti-psychotic drugs with adults with learning disabilities and challenging behaviour.

The use of anti-psychotic medication with an adult population of people with learning disabilities and challenging behaviours was investigated as part of an epidemiological study covering seven district health authorities and corresponding local authorities in North West England. The study found a high rate of prescription of anti-psychotic drugs (48.1%). Chlorpromazine was the most frequently prescribed drug, followed by Thioridazine and Haloperidol. Three variables, psychiatric diagnosis, where the person was resident (hospital disturbed ward, hospital non-disturbed ward, hostel or family ho

ME/CFS and the emotional toll of persistent disbelief: from epistemic to affective injustice.

Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) is a debilitating chronic illness whose sufferers are frequently met with disbelief, stigmatization, and psychologization in both clinical and social contexts. Recent work has used the concept of "epistemic injustice" to illuminate important dimensions of this problem, especially the ways in which ME/CFS patients are discredited as knowers and denied adequate interpretive resources. This paper argues that the harms associated with persistent disbelief in ME/CFS are not exhausted by this epistemic dimension. Drawing on recent philosoph

Constructive processes in person cognition.

The notion of constructive memory processes is imported from research on eyewitness memory to the area of social cognition. Mere questioning about the applicability of personality attributes to a target person is shown to affect subsequent memory-based judgements of that person. These constructive influences are to be distinguished, conceptually, from the global notion of priming effects. In Expt 1, the target person was first described as an extravert; afterwards, subjects had to indicate whether either desirable aspects of extraversion (self-confidence) or undesirable aspects (exhibitionism)

Analysis of the cost-effectiveness of proton beam therapy for unresectable pancreatic cancer in Japan.

BACKGROUND: Proton beam therapy (PBT) has recently been included in Japan's social health insurance benefits package. This study aimed to determine the cost-effectiveness of PBT for unresectable, locally advanced pancreatic cancer (LAPC) as a replacement for conventional photon radiotherapy (RT). METHODS: We estimated the incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) of PBT as a replacement for three-dimensional conformal RT (3DCRT), a conventional photon RT, using clinical evidence in the literature and expense complemented by expert opinions. We used a decision tree and an economic and Markov

Utilization of organs following implementation of the 2020 United States Public Health Service guideline recommendations.

The 2013 U.S. Public Health Service (PHS) guideline for screening organ donors for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis B virus (HBV), and hepatitis C virus (HCV) designated donors with social and behavioral characteristics associated with HIV, HBV, and HCV for transmission as increased risk donors (IRDs) and was associated with an underutilization of IRD organs. In 2020, the PHS guideline was updated to remove the IRD designation and certain risk factor criteria. We analyzed adult and pediatric organ transplantation from 2019 to 2023 to assess the impact of the 2020 guideline on orga

A Replication and Extension of the Factor Structure of the Masculine Drinking Norms Measure (MDNM) and Associations with Drinking Behaviors in a Multisite Sample of College Men.

Gender-specific norms are learned, which can influence social norms, attitudes, and behaviors in specific situations. For example, men who conform to certain masculine norms/ideals may express their masculinity by drinking alcohol. Recent research indicates that endorsement of alcohol-specific masculine norms is mixed when predicting men's risk for heavy consumption and adverse alcohol-related outcomes. Using a large, college sample of self-identified men (n=1350; M age=20.10/SD=1.80; 12 universities), we examined the psychometric properties of the Masculine Drinking Norms Measure-MNDM, and th

Associations between post-traumatic stress disorder severity, drinking motives, and unhealthy alcohol use among women veterans.

OBJECTIVE: Unhealthy drinking, defined as patterns of alcohol use that increase risk for adverse consequences, is common among US military veterans. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) severity has been positively associated with alcohol-related consequences and, less consistently, alcohol consumption among veterans. PTSD is highly heterogeneous, with specific symptom clusters showing varying patterns of association with indices of unhealthy drinking. Drinking motives, particularly coping-related motives, have also been associated with greater alcohol-related consequences and PTSD severity.

Social Mistreatment Effect on Alcohol Misuse Trajectories Is Moderated by Subcortical Network Activation During Error Processing.

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a preventable condition that impacts more than 28 million adults in the United States. The neurocognitive correlates of AUD have been extensively studied, but their interaction with psychosocial contributors remains less clear. Social mistreatment is common in human society, and negative social experiences can lead to poor health behaviours, such as binge drinking. Inhibitory control and error processing are cognitive functions facilitating self-regulation, which may mitigate the influence of social mistreatment on alcohol misuse. This study examined the longitudi

Gender Performativity Norms and Friendship Networking Processes: An Epidemiological Perspective From a Longitudinal Cohort of Adolescents.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescence is a stage of development in which sensitivity to social norms and peer influences becomes more pronounced, and individuals are expected to conform to social group identities and adopt the normative behaviors of their peers, including gender role norms. However, little is known about the reciprocal effects between gender performativity and the friendship networking process in Taiwanese adolescents. Therefore, this study aimed to adopt a social network analysis to study the relationship mentioned above using a representative cohort study. METHODS: Empirical data were

[A preliminary fMRI study of moral judgment task in high functioning autistic children].

Autistic patients show social cognitive disorders and hardly recognize their situations. This means it is difficult for them to obey rules or conform to customs. Humans have social intelligence thought to be related to a network connected to amygdala, the orbito-frontal cortex, and the superior temporal gyrus. It has been reported that normal participants judged morality in dilemma sentences through which the medial orbito-frontal cortex and the right lateral prefrontal cortex were activated. However, where autism is concerned, there has been no fMRI study during the moral judgment task. The s

Physician Burnout and Higher Clinic Capacity to Address Patients' Social Needs.

BACKGROUND: A recent regional study found lower burnout among primary care clinicians who perceived that their clinic had greater capacity to meet patients' social needs. We aimed to more comprehensively investigate the association between clinic capacity to address social needs and burnout by using national data that included a more representative sample of family physicians and a more comprehensive set of practice-level variables that are potential confounders of an association between clinic social needs capacity and burnout. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of 1298 family

Cultural aspects in social anxiety and social anxiety disorder.

To examine cultural aspects in social anxiety and social anxiety disorder (SAD), we reviewed the literature on the prevalence rates, expressions, and treatments of social anxiety/SAD as they relate to culture, race, and ethnicity. We further reviewed factors that contribute to the differences in social anxiety/SAD between different cultures, including individualism/collectivism, perception of social norms, self-construal, gender roles, and gender role identification. Our review suggests that the prevalence and expression of social anxiety/SAD depends on the particular culture. Asian cultures t

"How Do I Exist in This Body…That's Outside of the Norm?" Trans and Nonbinary Experiences of Conformity, Coping, and Connection in Atypical Anorexia.

Addressing eating disorders (EDs) within trans and nonbinary (TNB) populations is a growing concern, as TNB individuals are two to four times more likely to experience EDs than cisgender women. This study explored the lived experiences of TNB people with atypical anorexia by examining how gender identity impacted experiences of ED illness and (potential) recovery. Nine TNB adults with atypical anorexia were followed for one year and completed semi-structured, in-depth, longitudinal qualitative interviews at baseline, 6 months, and 12 months. Interviews were coded using Braun and Clark's themat

Identity-Related Factors Protect Well-Being Against Stigma for Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming People.

Relatively little is known about identity-related resilience factors associated with well-being among transgender and gender non-conforming (TGNC) people. Drawing upon theory on stigma-related stress and resilience and work examining group identification as a buffer against discrimination, the aim of the current study was to model perceived discrimination, transgender identification, and gender identity affirmation as predictors of well-being for TGNC people. We also tested whether the positive association between gender identity affirmation and well-being might be explained by the benefits af

The Interplay Between Sex-Biased Parenting Attitudes and Children's Gender Nonconformity in the Psychological Adjustment of School-Age Children.

Research on parental attitudes toward children's gender-related behaviors suggests that parents often treat boys and girls differently and apply varying degrees of pressure on children to conform to traditional gender norms. These pressures can negatively affect children's psychological adjustment. Compared to their cisgender peers, gender-diverse children tend to experience greater psychosocial challenges. In the present study, 1411 parents of children aged 6-12 completed questionnaires including the Italian adaptation of the Sex-Biased Parenting Scale (SB-PIQ), which assesses parental attitu

Self-presentational motives in eating disordered behavior: a known groups difference approach.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the role of self-presentation motivation across three groups with known differences in disordered eating behavior. METHODS: Female participants (N=131) were currently in-treatment for an eating disorder (n=39), deemed at-risk (n=46), or not-at-risk for an eating disorder (n=46). All participants completed general and physique-specific measures of self-presentation motivation. RESULTS: Results revealed significant moderate differences between groups. Those not-at-risk reported lower levels of self-presentation motivation across all measures compared to those
