Social anxiety as a precursor for depression: Influence of interpersonal rejection and attention to emotional stimuli.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) are comorbid conditions, and SAD confers risk for MDD. Biased attention and interpersonal rejection are important for the development of SAD and MDD, but little research has examined how these processes may lead to MDD. We hypothesized that interpersonal rejection would result in SAD symptoms being associated with more "depression-like" attention biases. Participants (n = 164) completed a measure of SAD symptoms and an eye tracking task before and after a task in which they were randomized to be socially included or rejected. SA

Correlates of Social Exclusion in Social Anxiety Disorder: An fMRI study.

Cognitive models posit that social anxiety disorder (SAD) is maintained by biased information-processing vis-à-vis threat of social exclusion. However, uncertainty still abounds regarding the very nature of this sensitivity to social exclusion in SAD. Especially, brain alterations related to social exclusion have not been explored in SAD. Our primary purpose was thus to determine both the self-report and neural correlates of social exclusion in this population. 23 patients with SAD and 23 matched nonanxious controls played a virtual game ("Cyberball") during fMRI recording. Participants were f

Social justice and social determinants of health: lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, intersexed, and queer youth in Canada.

TOPIC: While nurses address lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, intersexed, and queer (henceforth LGBTIQ) patients' health needs, the professional nursing practice value of social justice provides a larger role for nurses in identifying and minimizing social barriers faced by LGBTIQ patients. PURPOSE: This paper examines the social and health-related experiences of LGBTIQ youth in Canada, a country which has removed many of the social and legal barriers faced by LGBTIQ in countries such as the United States. An awareness of the Canadian LGBTIQ experience is instructive for nurses in differ

Predictors of Late-Life Depression and the Mediating Role of Digital Inclusion Across Living Arrangements in Vietnam.

Rapid population aging in Vietnam raises concerns about late-life depression. This study analyzed data from 4,457 adults aged 60+ in the 2018 Longitudinal Study of Aging and Health to identify predictors of depressive symptoms and assess whether digital inclusion mediates the effects of living arrangements. Weighted logistic regression examined associations, and generalized structural equation modeling assessed mediation, adjusting for demographic, health, and social factors. Living with non-spouse/non-child members, rural residence, disability, chronic disease, lower education, and limited so

[Formula: see text] Unraveling the impact of child opportunity and medical factors on neuropsychological outcomes in school-age patients with critical congenital heart disease.

We examine the role that medical history and social determinants of health play in predicting school-age intellectual (IQ) and executive functioning (EF) in children with critical congenital heart disease (cCHD). This is a retrospective observational study of 197 patients with cCHD (age 5-18 years) who attended a neuropsychological evaluation through the Cardiac Neurodevelopmental Program. Medical history and social determinants of health (SDOH), measured by the Childhood Opportunity Index (COI 3.0), were obtained via chart review. COI was a significant predictor of school-age IQ and EF. Seizu

Chronic cough: more than just a persistent cough: a systematic literature review to understand the impact of chronic cough on quality of life.

PURPOSE: Chronic cough (CC), defined as a cough persisting ≥ 8 weeks, can have a substantial negative impact on health-related quality of life (HRQoL). This is exacerbated by challenges with timely diagnosis and a lack of approved therapies. A systematic literature review (SLR) was conducted to identify evidence on HRQoL and health state utility values associated with refractory CC or unexplained CC. METHODS: Electronic database searches were supplemented with searches of conference proceedings and health technology assessment body websites. Two independent reviewers assessed all citations fo

Peer perspectives on friendships among peers with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities: A pilot mixed methods study.

BACKGROUND: The benefits of friendships among peers with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities are well supported by research. However, little is known about the nature of these inclusive friendships in inclusive college courses. METHOD: We explored the perspectives of peers on the development of authentic friendships among peers with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities in inclusive college courses in the United States. We used a sequential, explanatory, transformative mixed methods-grounded theory research design. We integrated quantitative (N = 44) and

Navigating Challenges with Trust and Creativity: Adolescents' Experiences of COVID-19 in Iceland.

In this study, we explore the relational dimensions of resilience among adolescents in Iceland during the COVID-19 pandemic. Using the frameworks of social-ecological resilience and the embodied, social, and public child, we examine how resilience manifests through interactions with family, peers, and community. Participants employed tactical trust and creative strategies to navigate restrictions, transforming digital and physical spaces into sources of social connection. Their critical engagement with public health policies highlighted vulnerability as integral to resilience. Our findings rev

Animal Connections: A Scoping Review towards Enhanced Understanding of Companion Animal Interactions in Assessment of Social Connectedness in Older Adults.

Social isolation and loneliness are concerns in gerontology. The impact of the human-animal interaction (HAI) on loneliness for older adults living alone is understudied. This scoping review explored the extent to which HAI is included in studies investigating social connectedness, specifically social isolation and loneliness, and if HAI bolsters healthy aging through increased perceived support. Following the PRISMA-ScR protocol, data from 58 articles were thematically categorized, identifying (a) existing inclusion of HAI; (b) definitions and descriptions of HAI; and (c) the relationships be

The past, present and future of Social Psychiatry.

In psychiatry, tensions have often arisen between biological and social approaches, despite their interconnection. Social psychiatry has evolved alongside changing understandings of mental health and its ties to broader social and geopolitical determinants. Global factors such as economic inequality, migration, and social exclusion are increasingly recognized as key influences on mental health outcomes. Nonetheless, challenges like stigma, lack of access, and resource limitations persist. The Biopsychosocial Model remains central to social psychiatry, offering an integrated framework that cons

Toward feminist principles for epidemiology and public health.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiology has traditionally examined the distribution and determinants of health in populations. While early work focused on social determinants and collective conditions, recent decades have seen a shift toward individualized, molecular, and risk-based models emphasizing behavior, biology, and lifestyle. This shift has often obscured structural determinants and reinforced a biomedical paradigm. Feminist scholarship critiques these trends by centering lived experiences, power dynamics, and inequities in health research. MAIN BODY: This commentary explores how feminist principle

Critically Exploring Self-Harm Through Lived Experience Perspectives: A Survivor-Controlled Integrative Review Employing Participatory Methodology.

INTRODUCTION: In psychiatric knowledge, self-harm is commonly understood as an individual, self-destructive behaviour arising from emotional dysregulation where sociocultural context is referred to briefly but typically overlooked. Conversely, many with lived experience (LE) highlight relational and systemic trauma, abuse and violence as inseparable from self-harm. This survivor-controlled integrative review was led by a LE researcher and employed participatory methodology with people with LE to explore self-harm. Our research question was 'How is self-harm conceptualised?'. METHODS: Evidence

The Impact of Misinformation on Social Media in the Context of Natural Disasters: Narrative Review.

BACKGROUND: Misinformation on social media during natural disasters has become a significant challenge, with the potential to increase public confusion, panic, and distrust. Although individuals rely on social media platforms for timely updates during crises, these platforms also facilitate the rapid spread of unverified and misleading information. Consequently, misinformation can hamper emergency response efforts, misdirect resources, and distort public perception of the disaster's true severity. OBJECTIVE: This narrative review aims to (1) critically evaluate the available evidence; (2) unp

Citizenship and Community Mental Health Care.

Citizenship is an approach to supporting the social inclusion and participation in society of people with mental illnesses. It is receiving greater attention in community mental health discourse and literature in parallel with increased awareness of social determinants of health and concern over the continued marginalization of persons with mental illness in the United States. In this article, we review the definition and principles of our citizenship framework with attention to social participation and access to resources as well as rights and responsibilities that society confers on its memb…

Investigating Undergraduate Student Perceptions of Classroom Inclusion-Emergence of the Student Perceptions of Instructor Practices-Inclusion/Exclusion (SPIP-I/E) Framework.

While assertions are common about what fosters inclusive undergraduate STEM classrooms, few studies have systematically investigated student perspectives. Additionally, it is unclear how students broadly perceive active learning practices in relation to inclusion. As such, we purposefully investigated student perceptions of classroom inclusion across courses in a biology department enriched with evidence-based teaching and situated in an urban, public institution. Student perceptions were investigated using open-ended prompts on a department-wide, end-of-term assessment. Results revealed that
