Alcohol Facilitates Social Dominance Via Activating Dopamine 1 Receptor-expressing Neurons in the Lateral Septum of Male Mice.

Acute alcohol consumption reduces behavioral inhibition while increasing locomotor activity, aggression, and social dominance, which is related to the mesolimbic dopamine system. The lateral septum (LS) abundantly expresses dopamine receptor neurons that critically regulate social motivation, reinforcement, and reward processing, their specific role in mediating acute alcohol related behavior remains poorly understood. In the present study, the acute alcohol exposure model (AAE) of male mice was established with different alcohol concentrations, and a tube, social interaction and open field te

Associations of social media and health content use with sexual risk behaviours among adolescents in South Africa.

Increasing rates of mobile phone access present potential new opportunities and risks for adolescents' sexual and reproductive health in resource-poor settings. We investigated associations between mobile phone access/use and sexual risks in a cohort of 10-24-year-olds in South Africa. 1563 adolescents (69% living with HIV) were interviewed in three waves between 2014 and 2018. We assessed mobile phone access and use to search for health content and social media. Self-reported sexual risks included: sex after substance use, unprotected sex, multiple sexual partnerships and inequitable sexual p

A Scoping Review of the Factor Associated with Older Adults' Mobility Barriers.

The phenomenon of ageing may contribute to the rise of the dependent population. Due to the obstacles and difficulties they confront, the elderly's mobility decreases significantly. The aim of this article is to identify factors associated with mobility barriers in older adults. The method employed is an examination of articles published between 2011 and 2022 to identify common themes in previous studies. Four search engines were being used, and 32 articles have been included. This study demonstrated that health is a major factor associated with decreased mobility. This review identified four

Fostering Connections: How Mentoring Relationships Can Promote Youth Social Capital.

Little is known about how mentors support mentees in strengthening social capital. It is theorized that mentors support mentees in building new connections and strengthening existing relationships (i.e., connection-building support). This mixed-methods study examines how connection-building support contributes to mentee's network mobilization in pursuit of life goals. Survey data were gathered from youth (n = 122) ages 13-18 (88% youth of color; 57% female). A path model tested the association between connection-building support and mentee goal attainment and occupational identity via network

Urban traffic dynamics and their impact on CO₂ emissions and temperature: a three-year GNSS-based study during the COVID-19 pandemic in Jakarta.

BACKGROUND AND METHOD: Urban traffic and air pollution remain strongly interconnected challenges for big cities. In Jakarta, transportation activity remains one of the primary contributors to carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions and urban heat stress, worsened by high-density land use and limited integration of public transportation. The COVID-19 pandemic temporarily transformed these dynamics through the policy of social mobility restriction; this study therefore aims to assess how changes in traffic volume affect CO₂ intensity and thermal level across different traffic policy and behavioral contex…

The impact of health shocks on housing instability: Evidence from urban Medicaid enrollees.

Poor health and unstable housing are closely linked. Most research has focused on how housing shapes health, with little empirical study of whether and how health events can lead to future residential mobility or housing instability. This paper uses high-frequency administrative data on residential location and health among Medicaid enrollees in New York City to test whether adverse health events trigger housing mobility or insecurity, independent of the financial toll of medical bills. Using an event study design, I find that health shocks - or, sudden hospitalizations after two hospital-free

Prioritizing mobility factors for assessment during the transition of older adults from hospital to home: a cross-sectional survey of physiotherapists in Southeastern Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Assessing all factors influencing older adults' mobility during the hospital-to-home transition is not feasible given the complex and time-sensitive nature of hospital discharge processes. OBJECTIVE: To describe the mobility factors that Nigerian physiotherapists prioritize to be assessed during hospital-to-home transition of older adults and explore the differences in the prioritization of mobility factors across the physiotherapists' demographics and practice variables. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 121 physiotherapists who completed an online questionnaire, rank

Assessing the Relationship of Quality of Life With Functional Status in a Large Cohort of Adult Patients With Neuromuscular Disorders.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Health-related quality of life (HR-QoL) is compromised in patients with neuromuscular disorders (NMDs). Disease severity alone does not predict HR-QoL; there are other known predictors including physical, psychological, and social factors. This study aims to provide insight into how mobility, age, and diagnosis may affect HR-QoL in adults with NMD. METHODS: The QoL in Genetic Neuromuscular Disease Questionnaire (QoL-gNMD) was completed by adult patients with NMDs before attending a clinical visit at the John Walton Muscular Dystrophy Research Centre in Newcastle upo

Modified ride-on toy cars for early power mobility: a technical report.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Children with significantly decreased mobility have limited opportunities to explore their physical and social environment. A variety of assistive technologies are available to increase mobility; however, no single device provides the level of functional mobility that children developing typically enjoy. The purpose of this technical report is to formally introduce a new power mobility option--the modified ride-on toy car. KEY POINTS: This report will provide (a) an overview of toy car features, (b) examples of basic electrical and mechanical modifications, and (c) a b

Promoting mobility in older people.

Out-of-home mobility is necessary for accessing commodities, making use of neighborhood facilities, and participation in meaningful social, cultural, and physical activities. Mobility also promotes healthy aging as it relates to the basic human need of physical movement. Mobility is typically assessed either with standardized performance-based tests or with self-reports of perceived difficulty in carrying out specific mobility tasks. Mobility declines with increasing age, and the most complex and demanding tasks are affected first. Sometimes people cope with declining functional capacity by ma

Mobile phone technology: a new paradigm for the prevention, treatment, and research of the non-sheltered "street" homeless?

Individuals experiencing homelessness have disproportionately high rates of health problems. Those who perceive themselves as having greater access to their social support networks have better physical and mental health outcomes as well as lower rates of victimization. Mobile phones offer a connection to others without the physical constraints of landlines and, therefore, may make communication (e.g., access to one's social support networks) more feasible for homeless individuals. This, in turn, could lead toward better health outcomes. This exploratory study examined mobile phone possession a
