A number of studies have indicated that social support is associated with the course of depression. However, none of these studies have ruled out the potentially confounding effects of personality factors, such as neuroticism. The authors examined whether social support was related to the course of depression after controlling for neuroticism and several possible confounding clinical variables. Participants were 59 patients meeting Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (American Psychiatric Association, 1987) criteria for major depression. All participants received structured d…

Coping, social support and quality of life (QOL) were examined in 120 HIV+ people (mean age = 37). The sample came from ambulatory clinics and drop-in centres in Toronto: 29% had AIDS, 35% were HIV symptomatic, and 35% were asymptomatic. Information was gathered from self-administered questionnaires. Respondents had good levels of social support and used a variety of coping strategies. Their scores on the behavioural and subjective measures of QOL were somewhat below average. The illness-related measure indicated that their diagnosis had an almost neutral effect on QOL and showed several areas…

Two studies were done to assess the direct and stress-buffering effects of social support on psychological symptoms of college students. Three conceptually distinct measures were used to assess different aspects of social support: receipt of supportive transactions, satisfaction with support received, and social support network characteristics. The results indicated a significant direct and stress-buffering effect for support satisfaction in reducing psychological symptomatology. Two measures of support network size were used: number of people who were both a source of supportive and of upsett…

BACKGROUND: For nearly a decade, the US Veterans Health Administration (VA) has distributed tablets to Veterans with access barriers who may benefit from video telehealth visits. Older Veterans' lower likelihood of tablet use relative to younger Veterans has prompted interest in factors influencing tablet utilization.
OBJECTIVES: We examined whether social support facilitates video telehealth utilization among older Veterans who received VA tablets.
RESEARCH DESIGN: We performed a cross-sectional analysis of electronic health record-linked survey data. We used multivariable logistic regressi…

OBJECTIVES: This study was designed to examine associations among measures of stress, social support, and symptoms at midlife. Specifically, the study examined whether support buffered against the negative effects of stress on severity of symptoms grouped via factor analyses into emotional instability, vaso-somatic symptoms, mood disturbances, and aches and pains.
METHODS: We used cross-sectional data from n = 119 women aged 40-55 in Nagaland, India. Midlife symptoms were measured with the help of questionnaires, and factor analysis was used to identify latent factors. Stress and social suppo…

Before infants walk independently, they move upright with support by holding caregivers' hands, pushing a wheeled walker, and "cruising" along walls or furniture. To what extent do caregivers and infants engage in these activities and do these experiences with supported walking relate to independent walking status? To address these questions, we assessed supported walking in 50 11-month-olds and their mothers in the context of everyday routines. For each bout of supported walking, coders scored the type of support, frequency of supported bouts, and the number of steps infants took per bout. Mo

A change of mind in response to social influence could be driven by informational conformity to increase accuracy, or by normative conformity to comply with social norms such as reciprocity. Disentangling the behavioural, cognitive, and neurobiological underpinnings of informational and normative conformity have proven elusive. Here, participants underwent fMRI while performing a perceptual task that involved both advice-taking and advice-giving to human and computer partners. The concurrent inclusion of 2 different social roles and 2 different social partners revealed distinct behavioural and

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE: The role of perceived social support from specific sources (e.g., families, friends, and significant others) on the development of postinjury posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and associated psychological symptoms (e.g., depression and anxiety) remains relatively unexplored. We examined the predictive role of social support from specific sources on psychological symptoms among emergency department (ED) patients following motor vehicle crash (MVC). Research Methods/Design: Sixty-three injured patients (63.5% female; 37 years old on average) with moderately painful complain…

BACKGROUND: Women with hirsutism have reported imparied health and health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Social support is a factor that might increase HRQoL in chronic diseases, but little is known about this association among women with hirsutism.
AIM: The aim of the study was to describe social support and explore its association with HRQoL among women with hirsutism. A further aim was to compare HRQoL in women with hirsutism with a Swedish normal population.
METHODS: A questionnaire including socio-demographic questions, Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36), the Multidimensional Scale of P…

The author, a lawyer who advocates for transgender children and youth, explores how clinical approaches to transgender children and youth are keeping pace with social and legal changes affecting these young people and with recent evidence suggesting that children are harmed by family and societal rejection as well as by attempts to change their gender identity or gender expression. The author urges providers and legal advocates to work with policymakers and the families of transgender children and youth to create a future in which these young people can reach their full potential and be embrac

BACKGROUND: Psychosocial factors largely external to the individual--such as social support and those that are inherently dispositional, like optimism--may both play a role in determining oral health outcomes and serve to buffer the effect of each other.
PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to assess associations of social support and optimism on oral health.
METHOD: In 2005-2006, n = 1,859 persons around 30 years old were surveyed to collect data on social support, optimism, oral health-related quality of life, and caries experience.
RESULTS: Unadjusted analyses found high social support ass…

While most births result in a live baby, stillbirth (the birth of a dead baby) occurs in nearly 1 in 110 pregnancies. This study examined whether levels of maternal anxiety and depression are lower amongst mothers who received social support after stillbirth. Using non-probability sampling, data were collected from 769 mothers residing within the USA who experienced a stillbirth within the past 18 months and for whom we have complete data. The study Maternal Observations and Memories of Stillbirth and the website http://www.momstudy.com containing the questionnaire were open in the period 8 Fe…

Rare diseases (RD) pose a great challenge to our society in different fields: health, social and educational. This means that multidisciplinary interventions are required that deal with the negative impact of these diseases on the people affected and their families. In order to minimise the repercussion of these problems there are a series of support resources in the different fields referred to (social, educational and health) that provide welfare, favour social integration and improve the quality of life of the people affected and their families. With respect to the educational field we pres

There is strong and consistent evidence across numerous studies that social isolation or lack of social support is an independent risk factor for incident coronary heart disease. However, the impact of social isolation or lack of social support on the progression of coronary atherosclerosis in women has not been well documented. Among 292 women, aged 30-65 years, consecutively hospitalized with acute myocardial infarction or unstable angina between 1991 and 1994 enrolled in the female coronary risk study, 102 women were available to study disease progression over an average of 3.2 years. This study investigated the effect of perceived social support on the outcome of group therapy for patients who experienced complicated grief following a variety of death losses. One hundred and seven psychiatric outpatients, who received either interpretive or supportive group therapy, rated their perceptions of social support from three sources (family, friends, and a special person) prior to treatment onset. For patients in both forms of therapy, perceived social support from friends was directly associated with favorable treatment outcome. In contrast, perceived social support from family …

A causal model based on Lazarus' (1966) cognitively oriented theory of psychological stress and coping was tested in a functionally disabled population to determine the effects of social support variables, threat appraisal, and coping responses on coping effectiveness. Social support variables (perceived availability of social support, perceived effectiveness of social support, and personal constraints to the use of social support) were hypothesized to effect coping responses both directly and through the variable of threat appraisal. Coping responses (use of social support, cognitive reapprai…
