Compound drought-heat wave hazards are concentrated in US regions with multiple social vulnerabilities and agricultural dependence.

Compound drought and heat wave (CDHW) events are becoming more frequent and intense across the contiguous United States, increasing risks to human health, ecosystems, agriculture, and energy production systems. However, their distribution across socioeconomically vulnerable communities remains largely unexplored at the national scale. In this study, we develop a CDHW metric by integrating weekly US Drought Monitor classifications with daily temperature extremes from 2000-2021, allowing consistent mapping of CDHW occurrences along county-level socioeconomic conditions. Our analysis reveals sign

Digital disease management programme reduces chronic gastrointestinal symptoms among racially and socially vulnerable populations.

OBJECTIVE: Considerable disparities exist in access to gastrointestinal (GI) care and digestive outcomes across gender, racial, and socioeco … n therapy, GI-specific health coaching, and targeted education on common GI symptoms. We assigned a Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) score to each participant according to their home address and compared baseline and end-intervention symptoms and other patient-reported outcomes by gender, race/ethnicity, and SVI. RESULTS: Of the 1936 participants, mean age was 43.1 y …

Understanding the psycho-social problems of vulnerable adolescent girls and effect of intervention through life skill training.

INTRODUCTION: Children and adolescents are considered to be among the most vulnerable groups with respect to psychosocial issues who have been affected the most by this change in the family structure. The adolescent phase for girls is a critical period characterized by significant bio-psychosocial transformations. It is imperative to provide adolescents with the necessary tools and abilities to effectively confront these challenges which are provided by the members of the family. The implementation of life skill education is commonly acknowledged as an intervention mechanism for augmenting ski

Social and programmatic vulnerability in the context of transgender people's health: a scoping review of scientific evidence from Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Most transgender people face different conditions of health vulnerability on a daily basis. In the Brazilian context, no research review has been found on such situations in the light of the theoretical conceptualization of multidimensional vulnerability. This research aimed to identify and analyze components of social and/or programmatic vulnerability that interfere with access to health care for trans people in Brazil. METHODS: The scoping review followed the JBI Manual and the PRISMA-ScR list. Brazilian studies published in any language, in the period 2019-April 2023, in the NC

Utilizing social determinants of health to identify most vulnerable neighborhoods-Latent class analysis and GIS map.

OBJECTIVES: Public Health officials are often challenged to effectively allocate limited resources. Social determinants of health (SDOH) may cluster in areas to cause unique profiles related to various adverse life events. The authors use the framework of unintended teen pregnancies to illustrate how to identify the most vulnerable neighborhoods. METHODS: This study used data from the U.S. American Community Survey, Princeton Eviction Lab, and Connecticut Office of Vital Records. Census tracts are small statistical subdivisions of a county. Latent class analysis (LCA) was employed to separate

Medicare home health payment reform may jeopardize access for clinically complex and socially vulnerable patients.

The Affordable Care Act directed Medicare to update its home health prospective payment system to reflect more recent data on costs and use … -profit home health agencies in 2011. We found that patients with clinically complex conditions and social vulnerability factors, such as living alone, had substantially higher service delivery costs than other home health patients. Effect of households' social networks on lice infestation among vulnerable Mexican children: a qualitative comparative analysis.

The prevalence of pediculosis is high among elementary and secondary school children, which favors the belief that infestation occurs more often in schools than in homes. This study explored the role of households' social networks in the transmission of head lice. Seventeen school children and their social networks (n = 22) from Acatlipa (Morelos, Mexico) participated in a prospective observational study during school vacation. The hair of all the school children was washed with shampoo containing permethrin at the beginning of the study and the incidence of pediculosis (O) was evaluated at th

Oral health indicators and dental care utilization patterns among adults in a context of social vulnerability (Polígono Sur, Seville).

INTRODUCTION: Access to quality dental services continues to be a challenge for individuals living in contexts of social exclusion. In the Polígono Sur area of Seville, the high socioeconomic vulnerability of the population highlights the need to identify barriers to access and to provide evidence for the development of more inclusive public policies. OBJECTIVE: To describe the oral health status of a group of adults enrolled at the CEPer Polígono Sur, considering sociodemographic, clinical, and access-to-care aspects. Determinants of care seeking behavior for sexually transmitted infections in a context of social vulnerability: Evidence from Essaouira, Morocco.

This study was designed to examine the care practices adopted in the presence of signs of sexually transmitted infection among women of childbearing age in the province of Essaouira, Morocco. A cross-sectional study was carried out on a sample of 1100 sexually active women of childbearing age. Data were collected via questionnaires. The results showed that more than half of the women (63%) consulted a health professional if they showed signs of an STI. However, 37% chose other non-medical remedies. Association between social vulnerability index and rates of carbapenem-resistant enterobacterales infections in the Denver metropolitan region, 2016-2019.

In Denver area census tracts during the years 2016-2019, the rate of carbapenem-resistant enterobacterales (CRE) infection increased by 10% for every 0.1 unit increase in Social Vulnerability Index (RR 1.10, 95% CI 1.06, 1.14). This finding suggests that community factors may influence risk of healthcare-associated infections such as CRE.

BACKGROUND: Gonorrhea remains a significant burden in central Ohio, particularly in socially disadvantaged communities. This study evaluates gonorrhea case rates and changes from 2020 to 2021, focusing on geographic patterns associated with social vulnerability. METHODS: We analyzed gonorrhea case data from the Columbus STD Surveillance Network for 2020 and 2021. Cases were linked to census tracts and categorized into low (0-0.66) or high (0.67-1.0) vulnerability groups based on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention/Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry Social Vulnerabilit…

Shame and guilt as shared vulnerability factors: Shame, but not guilt, prospectively predicts both social anxiety and bulimic symptoms.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) and bulimia nervosa (BN) are highly comorbid. However, little is known about the shared vulnerability factors that prospectively predict both SA and BN symptoms. Two potential factors that have not yet been tested are shame and guilt. In the current study we tested if shame and guilt were shared vulnerability factors for SA and BN symptoms. Women (N=300) completed measures of SA symptoms, BN symptoms, state shame and guilt, and trait negative affect at two time points, two months apart. Utilizing structural equation modeling we tested a cross-sectional and prospec
