Third-degree atrioventricular block associated with suspected arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy in a three-year-old Cocker spaniel.

A three-year-old spayed female English Cocker spaniel was presented with diarrhea, abdominal distension, and exercise intolerance. On physical examination, bradycardia, abdominal distension with positive undulation, and a soft systolic right-sided heart murmur were detected. Electrocardiography showed a third-degree atrioventricular block with monomorphic idioventricular rhythm and premature ventricular ectopic beats. On echocardiography, an extremely thin right ventricular wall, severe right ventricular and atrial dilation, and severely depressed right ventricular systolic function were obser

Multimodal imaging of congenital double-inlet left ventricle with hypoplastic right ventricle and ventricular septal defect in a young cat.

Double-inlet left ventricle (DILV) is a rare congenital cardiac abnormality that is a subtype of univentricular congenital disease. This defect has been reported in people and large animals but has not been previously described in a small animal. Here, we report a one-year-old cat diagnosed with DILV accompanied by a hypoplastic right ventricle and ventricular septal defect. Complete echocardiography, fluoroscopy with non-selective angiography, and computed tomography with angiography were used to document and characterize this rare case presentation. Findings in this patient showed similariti

Open atrial septal defect repair in a dog using fresh autologous pericardium.

A one-year-old Standard poodle was presented for evaluation of exercise intolerance with suspicion for a large atrial septal defect. Transthoracic echocardiography identified an unrestricted 2-cm secundum-type atrial septal defect with a peak left-to-right flow of 1 m/s yielding a Qp/Qs ratio of 2.1:1 and moderate right-sided chamber dilation. Based on clinical signs and echocardiographic findings, closure was recommended. Transesophageal echocardiography was subsequently performed to help determine the most appropriate closure method, which revealed insufficient posterior rim, and hence, surg

Right sinus of Valsalva aneurysm ruptured into the right atrium in a dog.

A 10-year-old spayed female Shih Tzu was referred with a heart murmur. Auscultation revealed a continuous 4/6 right anterior chest basilar murmur. Chest X-ray showed no cardiac dilation or lung abnormalities. Short-axis view on transthoracic echocardiography revealed an aneurysmal dilation from the right sinus of Valsalva, with a defect opening into the right atrium. Colour Doppler echocardiography showed a continuous, turbulent flow through the defect, entering the right atrium from the aorta, along with mild mitral and moderate aortic regurgitations. Pulmonary-to-systemic flow ratio was 1.11

Left ventricular non-compaction cardiomyopathy in eight guinea pigs (Caviaporcellus).

INTRODUCTION: Left ventricular non-compaction cardiomyopathy (LVNC) is a rare form of myocardial disease in humans, and only three animal case reports have been published. We report on LVNC in eight guinea pigs. ANIMALS, MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between 2018 and 2023, LVNC was identified in eight hairless Skinny breed guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus) aged 2-4.5 years that were referred for cardiac evaluation. Physical and echocardiographic examinations were performed. Echocardiographic findings were compared to those of a matched case-control group comprising eight apparently healthy guinea pigs.

Osborn waves secondary to hypercalcemia in a dog.

A seven-year-old female spayed Vizsla was presented on referral for evaluation after ingesting a toxic dose of a vitamin D analogue (calciportriol). The owners had noted vomiting, ptyalism, and polydipsia prior to evaluation. Blood work was performed, which confirmed a severe ionized hypercalcemia, and the dog was admitted for medical management of the hypercalcemia. An electrocardiogram was performed due to the severity of the hypercalcemia, which revealed Osborn waves. While Osborn waves have been reported in cases of hypercalcemia in humans, this is the first case of Osborn waves in a dog a

Divided left atrium (cor triatriatum sinister) with atresia of the right pulmonary veins in a cat.

A nine-month-old, female Maine Coon cat was referred for acute respiratory distress. Echocardiography revealed the presence of a membrane dividing the left atrium into two chambers, suggestive of cor triatriatum sinister (CTS). Due to poor prognosis, the owner elected for humane euthanasia. At necropsy, a transverse fibromuscular membrane containing an orifice dividing the left atrium into two chambers was observed, confirming the diagnosis of CTS, or divided left atrium. Moreover, atresia of the outflow of right pulmonary veins into the left atrium was identified. This study reports the rare

Complete transposition of the great arteries with a patent ductus arteriosus, atrial septal defect, and juxta-arterial ventricular septal defect in a cat.

An 11-week-old male intact Siamese cat was presented for evaluation of a grade V/VI parasternal systolic murmur. Echocardiography revealed multiple congenital cardiac abnormalities, including parallel orientation of the aorta and main pulmonary artery, a patent ductus arteriosus, and a juxta-arterial ventricular septal defect. Cardiac remodeling secondary to these congenital defects was also noted. The patient was clinically stable at the time of presentation, but the owner ultimately elected for humane euthanasia before the onset of cardiac decompensation. Postmortem necropsy was performed to

Idiopathic spontaneous intracardiac microbubbles in an adult dog.

A four-year-old, female neutered English springer spaniel presented for evaluation of exercise intolerance, panting and lingual cyanosis. Echocardiography revealed a structurally and functionally normal heart with the presence of spontaneous intracardiac microbubbles entering the right side of the heart from the caudal vena cava. A cause for the clinical signs could not be identified; routine blood work, urinalysis and electrocardiography were unremarkable. Testing for tick-borne diseases, clotting times, cardiac biomarkers, thyroid function and basal cortisol were all within normal limits. Fa

Treatment of supravalvular mitral stenosis in a kitten with hybrid balloon angioplasty.

A five-month-old, 2.8-kg domestic shorthair cat was presented for further evaluation of supravalvular mitral stenosis and congestive heart failure. Thoracic radiography revealed severe cardiomegaly, pulmonary arterial and venous distention, and cardiogenic pulmonary edema. Thoracic echocardiography revealed a thick, perforate membrane within the left atrium, just dorsal to the mitral annulus. The majority of the left atrial body including the left auricle was dorsal to this membrane, consistent with the diagnosis of supravalvular mitral stenosis. Spontaneous echocardiographic contrast was obse

Diagnosis of congestive heart failure by combining echocardiography and blood biomarkers in cats with cardiomyopathy.

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVES: In cats with cardiomyopathy, echocardiographic indices and blood biomarkers such as atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP), cardiac troponin I (cTnI), and N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NTproBNP) are useful in diagnosing congestive heart failure (CHF). However, the improvement in diagnostic accuracy by combining these indicators remains unclear. ANIMALS, MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-six cats diagnosed with cardiomyopathy using echocardiography were included in this study. They were classified into CHF and non-CHF groups according to the presence of pulmonary oe

Cutting and high-pressure balloon angioplasty in a dog with concurrent pulmonary valvar and infundibular stenosis.

A two-year-old, 7.7-kg female spayed Cocker spaniel dog was presented for further evaluation of severe pulmonary stenosis. Transthoracic echocardiography revealed severe concentric hypertrophy and dilation of the right ventricle, and two distinct levels of obstruction were observed. A discrete level of obstruction was observed at the crista supraventricularis. This lesion was hyperechoic and located roughly 11 mm away from the pulmonary annulus. Additionally, pulmonary leaflets were elongated and demonstrated systolic doming. These findings were consistent with concurrent pulmonary valvar and

Association of pulmonary arterial end-diastolic forward flow and right heart remodeling in dogs with congenital pulmonic stenosis and precapillary pulmonary hypertension.

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVES: Main pulmonary artery end-diastolic forward flow (EDFF) has been evaluated as an indicator of right ventricular (RV) restrictive physiology (RVRP) in humans. The authors theorized that dogs with conditions associated with RVRP, including pulmonic stenosis (PS) and precapillary pulmonary hypertension (PH), would have an increased EDFF magnitude compared to normal dogs and that EDFF velocity in dogs with PS or PH would be correlated with disease severity and RV remodeling. ANIMALS, MATERIALS AND METHODS: Echocardiographic studies of client-owned dogs, including 50 each
