Computational mapping methods place molecular probes (small molecules or functional groups) on a protein surface to identify the most favorable binding positions by calculating an interaction potential. OBJECTIVE: To review the scope and sequelae of solvent abuse in women presenting to a Manitoba teaching hospital.
METHODS: Fifty-six patient charts with a diagnosis of solvent abuse in pregnancy were identified through computer search in the medical records of Winnipeg Health Sciences Centre, General Hospital. These charts were reviewed and data obtained from birthing records and associated pediatric charts.

Fifteen patients referred for the evaluation of possible organic solvent encephalopathy were studied by clinical polysomnography. Seven had more than 30 apnoeas per night and an apnoea index of higher than 5, thus fulfilling the commonly used criteria of the sleep apnoea syndrome. Another group of eight workers exposed to trichlorethane, examined without prior knowledge of their individual symptoms, showed a significantly elevated number of sleep apnoeas compared with nine controls. The results indicate that organic solvent exposure can cause sleep apnoea.

Five cases of ulcerative and erythematous lesions on the genitals and buttocks which occurred among workers whose coveralls had been dry-cleaned using Stoddard solvent are presented. A typical clinical picture and investigative results were consistent with irritant contact dermatitis. The literature on the two most commonly used dry-cleaning fluids is reviewed. The hazards of dry-cleaning chemicals, both for workers in dry-cleaning shops and for their clients who wear the cleaned clothes, are outlined. Suggestions pertaining to the avoidance of cutaneous reactions are detailed.

An organic solvent-stable lipase (LST-03 lipase) secreted into the culture broth of the organic solvent-tolerant Pseudomonas aeruginosa LST-03 was purified by ion-exchange and hydrophobic interaction chromatography in the presence of 2-propanol.
