2,10-Disubstituted phenothiazines are the best drugs in psychiatry. Several methods for their analysis have been reported in the literature. The official methods are based on non-aqueous titration or spectrophotometry. Various oxidizing agents have been used for the spectrophotometric determination of 2,10-disubstituted phenothiazines, e.g. Ce(SO4)2, NH4VO3, K2S208, KIO4, KIO3, KBrO3, FeCl3, NaNO2, H2O2, chloramine T, p-benzoquinone, N-bromosuccinimide. Burkholderia pseudomallei, the cause of melioidosis, can be distinguished from the closely related but nonpathogenic Burkholderia thailandensis by gas chromatography (GC) analysis of fatty acid derivatives. A 2-hydroxymyristic acid derivative (14:0 2OH) was present in 95% of B. pseudomallei isolates and no B. thailandensis isolates. GC mass spectrophotometry confirmed that 2-hydroxymyristic acid was present in B. pseudomallei. GC-fatty acid methyl ester analysis may be useful in distinguishing these two closely related species.

Blood selenium concentrations in 43 patients with laryngeal cancer and 47 normal subjects were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. No significant differences in selenium values were observed in sera from the cancer patients when compared with controls, but there were significant differences between patients with advanced (T4) supraglottic cancers and the normal controls. These results suggest that lower blood selenium levels in this latter group of laryngeal cancer patients may be a consequence of their disease rather than its cause.

Cadmium, lead and copper concentrations were measured in normal and cataractous human lenses by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The concentrations of all three elements were relatively higher in cataractous lenses compared with normals, and the ratios of cataract/normal concentrations were in the order Pb greater than Cd greater than Cu. The concentration of these trace elements also varied according to lense age. It is likely that the major source of cadmium is tobacco smoke while that of lead is the exhaust gases of motor cars.

Red blood cell, serum and tissue Mg concentrations in 100 subjects with aged 34-78, with squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The concentration of this cation in cancerous tissues was found to be about twice as high as in the unchanged homologous tissues of the host. This was accompanied by a systemic deficiency manifesting itself by a decreased Mg concentration in red blood cells, serum and muscles which became more pronounced as the disease advanced, and returned to normal after radical treatment.

Barbiturates are a source of interference in the estimation of paracetamol by both UV spectrophotometry and gas-liquid chromatography (GLC). Experiments have shown that the interference by barbiturates on GLC can be avoided by benzoylation (in aqueous solution) of the paracetamol. This O-benzoyl derivative can be N-silylated to give an additional identification parameter. The method, which requires ml of sample, will quantitatively and qualitatively estimate "free" paracetamol in plasma and in post mortem blood in the range of 2-40 mug of drug per millilitre of sample.
