Regression and principal components analyses were employed to study the relationship between 30 aerodynamic speech parameters and the speech intelligibility of 40 severely to profoundly hearing-impaired speakers. Regression analysis on the original 30 aerodynamic variables revealed that speech intelligibility was predicted by a cognate-pair voice onset-time difference measure and a measure of the stability of the volume-velocity rise time. Principal components analysis of the 30 independent variables derived seven factors that accounted for 84.3% of the variance in the original 30 parameters.

BACKGROUND: Moebius syndrome (MS) is characterized by congenital bilateral paralysis of the facial and abducens nerves. Clinical features include feeding problems, dysarthria, dysphagia, sialorrhea, strabismus, and lack of facial expression. Patients with MS frequently present with dysphagia during infancy. Further on during childhood a severe speech disorder is a common feature. However, articulation deficits in patients with MS are scarcely reported in the related scientific literature.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to describe speech deviations, intelligibility and sialorrhea in pati

AIM: Speakers with dysphonia often report difficulty with maintaining intelligibility in noisy environments; however, there is no objective method for characterizing this difficulty. Landmark-based analysis is a linguistically-motived, knowledge-based speech analysis technique, which may serve as the basis of acoustic tool for describing the intelligibility deficit. As the first step toward development of such a tool, this study examined whether Landmark-based analysis could describe acoustic differences between normal and dysphonic speech.
METHOD: The recordings subjected to the Landmark-bas

A patient with a maxillectomy and persistent hypernasality despite wearing a digitally fabricated obturator and receiving speech therapy was treated with a nasal speaking valve (NSV) adjunct. Using speech intelligibility tests, the Kumakura Speech Handicap Index-7, nasalance scores, and the blowing test, speech outcomes were assessed under 3 conditions: without a prosthesis, with digitally fabricated obturator alone, and with the combined use of an obturator and NSV. The combined use of the obturator and NSV improved speech intelligibility and reduced hypernasality, suggesting clinical benefit

Reports the notice of retraction of "Computer-based voice familiarization, delivered remotely using an online platform, improves speech intelligibility for older and younger adults" by Wansu Zhu and Emma Holmes (Journal of Experimental Psychology: Applied, Advanced Online Publication, Dec 09, 2024, np). This retraction is at the request of coauthors Zhu and Holmes after they discovered an issue with how Gorilla assigned participants to conditions for the Speech Intelligibility Test. The training results were correct. However, the Speech Intelligibility results were incorrect. Given that Gorill

The current study involved the ability of deep-learning based noise reduction to generalize to accented-English speech. The deep neural network (DNN) was trained using a large number of different speakers (and different noises) of primarily standard native American English. This model was used to remove background noise from speech produced by 88 speakers having 9 different native-language backgrounds, who spoke English as a second language. The resulting speech was characterized by accents strong enough to substantially affect intelligibility. Objective measures of intelligibility, which refl

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Individuals with speech disorders are often judged more negatively than peers without speech disorders. A limited number of studies examined the attitudes of adolescents toward peers with speech disorders due to a cleft lip with or without a cleft of the palate (CL ± P). Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate the attitudes of peers toward the speech of adolescents with CL ± P.
METHOD: Seventy-eight typically developing adolescents (15-18 years, 26 boys, 52 girls) judged audio and audiovisual samples of two adolescents with CL ± P based on three attitud

PURPOSE: This study examined the effect of alphabet supplementation (AS) on temporal and spectral features of speech production in individuals with cerebral palsy and dysarthria.
METHOD: Twelve speakers with dysarthria contributed speech samples using habitual speech and while using AS. One hundred twenty listeners orthographically transcribed speech samples. Differences between habitual and AS speech were examined for intelligibility, rate, word duration, vowel duration, pause duration, pause frequency, vowel space, and first and second formant frequency (F1 and F2) values for corner vowels.

Post-surgical maxillary defects have recently been reconstructed by microvascularized free flaps. However, few reports have evaluated the resulting speech function. This study compared the speech intelligibility of four maxillectomy patients who underwent reconstruction by rectus abdominis myocutaneous flaps (RAMCF) with that of four non-reconstructed patients who were treated with split-skin grafts and prostheses, to explore ways of achieving better speech function. Speech function was assessed by a Japanese language speech intelligibility test. Intelligibility scores ranged from 57.3% to 75.

This study evaluated speech rehabilitation outcome and length of training needed for laryngectomized patients who underwent the Blom-Singer tracheoesophageal (TE) puncture procedure. Preoperative patient selection criteria included: 1) acceptable stoma size, 2) adequate motivation and manual dexterity, 3) absence of constrictor spasm. Training focused on coordination of breath control, articulation, muscle relaxation, and proper handling and maintenance of the "duckbill" prosthesis. Speech intelligibility in 12 patients was evaluated following the completion of their speech rehabilitation prog

This study assessed the ability of three acoustic measures of vowel space, two token-based and one trajectory-based, to quantify speech differences in people with Parkinson's disease compared to controls and correlations with speech intelligibility. Fifty-six speakers (28 people with Parkinson's and 28 controls) read a custom reading passage containing corner vowels. For token-based measures, the triangular vowel space area (tVSA) in kHz2 and the unitless ratio of vowel articulation index (VAI) were calculated. For the trajectory-based measure, the articulatory-acoustic vowel space (AAVS) in k

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of personalized and home-based speech therapy on quality of life, intelligibility, and social participation for people with Parkinson's disease (PD) who have a reduced intelligibility of speech.
BACKGROUND: Speech problems in PD have a profound negative impact on social interaction and quality of life. Evidence for speech therapy in PD is growing, but more work remains needed to explore its full potential. Efficacy exists for highly intensive standardized speech treatment programs, but not all patients can comply with this rather intense intervention,

Esophageal (ES) speech, tracheoesophageal (TE) speech, and the electrolarynx (EL) are common methods of communication following the removal of the larynx. Our recent study demonstrated that intelligibility may increase for Cantonese alaryngeal speakers using clear speech (CS) compared to their everyday "habitual speech" (HS), but the reasoning is still unclear [Hui, Cox, Huang, Chen, and Ng (2022). Folia Phoniatr. Logop. 74, 103-111]. The purpose of this study was to assess the acoustic characteristics of vowels and tones produced by Cantonese alaryngeal speakers using HS and CS. Thirty-one al

The evaluation of speech outcomes after resection and reconstruction of the oral tongue remains largely unsystematic. A cross-sectional study was performed to analyse the speech outcomes of patients who underwent curative treatment with appropriate reconstruction. Sixty-nine patients were assessed for speech intelligibility and phonetics using a validated speech intelligibility assessment tool in the local language. Volume defects were classified as class I (less than one third), II (one third to half), III (half to two-thirds), or IV (two-thirds to total glossectomy). Defect location was defi

OBJECTIVE: Tracheoesophageal voice is state-of-the-art in voice rehabilitation after laryngectomy. Intelligibility on a telephone is an important evaluation criterion as it is a crucial part of social life. An objective measure of intelligibility when talking on a telephone is desirable in the field of postlaryngectomy speech therapy and its evaluation.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Based upon successful earlier studies with broadband speech, an automatic speech recognition (ASR) system was applied to 41 recordings of postlaryngectomy patients. Recordings were available in different signal qualities;

We aimed to provide proof-of-principle evidence that intensive home-based speech treatment can improve dysarthria in complex multisystemic degenerative ataxias, exemplified by autosomal recessive spastic ataxia Charlevoix-Saguenay (ARSACS). Feasibility and piloting efficacy of speech training specifically tailored to cerebellar dysarthria was examined through a 4-week program in seven patients with rater-blinded assessment of intelligibility (primary outcome) and naturalness and acoustic measures of speech (secondary outcomes) performed 4 weeks before, immediately prior to, and directly after
