Endoscopic sphincterotomy is a benign procedure but occasional complications happen. They require a surgical team used to their specific management. On the other endoscopic sphincterotomy may control surgical insufficiency: retained stones. Main duct stones need a surgical approach, but endoscopy may be a substitute in many cases; this technic is more benign and efficient in most cases.

Autonomic dysreflexia continues to be a major problem in spinal cord injury patients. In our report 16 patients with spinal cord lesions abo … cystometry revealed significant decreases in intravesical and urethral pressures compared to before sphincterotomy (p less than 0.001) along with an associated significant decrease in blood pressure (p less than 0.01). Other dysreflexic responses also were markedly attenuated. These results suggest an association among detrusor-sphincter dyssynergia, high intrav …

Internal sphincterotomy is thought by most surgeons to have minimal complications. We retrospectively reviewed 306 patients following internal sphincterotomy to determine the incidence of any complications. Major complications (requiring reoperation) caused by fistula, bleeding, abscess, or unhealed wounds occurred in ten patients (3 percent). Minor complications caused by pruritus, persistent wound, pain, bleeding, abscess, discharge, urgency, impaction, or defects of continence occurred in 110 patients (36 percent). Complications were lowest for closed sphincterotomy (20 percent) and highest…

Recurrent pyogenic cholangitis is a condition prevalent in Asia. Surgery has been the only form of treatment when extrahepatic and/or intrahepatic biliary dilatation, irregularity, debris and calculi are present. Endoscopic sphincterotomy was attempted in 134 such patients, the majority of whom had calculi confined to the common bile duct, and in whom 85.8 per cent were over 60 years old, 61.2 per cent had previous biliary surgery, and 36.6 per cent had an associated major medical illness. Sphincterotomy was successful in 88 per cent of patients, good results were obtained in 81.3 per cent, an…

In 29 patients with abscesses of the anorectal region the wall of the purulent collection was sectioned not only toward the tegumental surface but also to the anal canal with partial sectioning of the sphincter in 9 of the cases with superficial abscesses, and complete sectioning of the sphincter in the remaining 20 patients that presented with ischio-rectal abscesses, and with deep posterior anal abscesses. No relapse was noted and in none of the cases did anal fistulae or anal incontinence develop. In contrast with the scars that develop following surgery for fistulae, the scars that develop
