Scoliosis Management through Apps and Software Tools.

Background: Scoliosis is curvature of the spine, often found in adolescents, which can impact on quality of life. Generally, scoliosis is diagnosed by measuring the Cobb angle, which represents the gold standard for scoliosis grade quantification. Commonly, scoliosis evaluation is conducted in person by medical professionals using traditional methods (i.e., involving a scoliometer and/or X-ray radiographs). In recent years, as has happened in various medicine disciplines, it is possible also in orthopedics to observe the spread of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) solutions (i.e.

Effect of Different Exercise Types on the Cross-Sectional Area and Lumbar Lordosis Angle in Patients with Flat Back Syndrome.

Flat back syndrome (FBS) is a sagittal imbalance wherein the normal spinal curvature is reduced. This study aimed to compare the effects of different exercise programs on the cross-sectional area (CSA) of the lumbar muscles, lumbar lordosis angle (LLA), lumbar disability, and flexibility in patients with FBS. Thirty-six females with flexible FBS were randomly allocated to the corrective exercise group (CEG, n = 12), resistance exercise group (REG, n = 12), and physical therapy group (PTG, n = 12). CEG and REG patients participated in a 12-week exercise intervention for 60 min three times per w

Factors associated with having an indication for surgery in adult spinal deformity: an international european multicentre study.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate factors that distinguish between patients with adult spinal deformity (ASD) with and without an indication for surgery, irrespective of their final treatment. METHODS: Baseline variables (demographics, medical history, outcome measures, coronal, sagittal and neurologic parameters) were evaluated in a multicentre, prospective cohort of patients with ASD. Multivariable analyses were carried out for idiopathic and degenerative patients separately with the dependent variable being "indication for surgery" and baseline parameters as independent variab

Deep learning-based precision phenotyping of spine curvature identifies novel genetic risk loci for scoliosis in the UK Biobank.

Scoliosis is the most common developmental spinal deformity, but its genetic underpinnings remain only partially understood. To identify scoliosis-related loci, we utilized dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scans from 57,588 individuals in the UK Biobank (UKB), and quantified spinal curvature using deep learning-based vertebral segmentation and landmarking to measure cumulative horizontal displacement. On a subset of 150 individuals, our automated image-derived curvature measurements showed a correlation of 0.83 with clinical Cobb angle assessments, supporting their validity as a proxy fo

Prophylactic Spinal Cord Untethering in Children with Spinal Dysraphism Undergoing Thoracolumbar Fusion for Scoliosis.

BACKGROUND: It remains unclear whether spinal cord untethering is necessary to reduce the chances of neurologic decline in children with myelomeningocele and complex closed spinal dysraphism who undergo thoracolumbar fusion for scoliosis. We sought to determine the neurologic and functional outcomes of children with spinal dysraphism undergoing spinal fusion for scoliosis with and without prophylactic spinal cord untethering. METHODS: Retrospective, single-center review of patients with spinal dysraphism treated with thoracolumbar fusion over the last 10 years (2009-2019) with or without prop

[Multifunctional Cervical Health Care Pillow].

Cervical spondylosis is due to degenerative cervical disc and its stimulation or oppression of the adjacent nerves, spinal cord, spinal artery and other tissue caused by clinical symptoms. The cervical spine is an anatomical structure with activity, while the pillow has a certain plastic fixation effect on the cervical spine anatomy. Therefore, the pillow not only plays a health role in the cervical spine, but also plays an important role in restoring the normal physiological curvature of the cervical spine. Based on this, a multi-functional cervical vertebra treatment pillow is designed, whic

Sagittal balance of the spine.

Spinal balance can be defined as the trade-off between outside forces acting on the spine and the muscle response of the trunk, under sensorineural regulation, to maintain stable upright posture, both static and dynamic. Homo sapiens developed sagittal alignment along with bipedalism. The upright posture was an important step in human evolution, to master the environment, at the price of some instability in postural control in the trunk, and to maintain horizontal gaze. To make upright stance energetically economical and thus sustainable, reciprocal sagittal curvatures developed. Sagittal spin

Early fidelity and long-term drift: do we achieve preoperative alignment goals in adult spinal deformity?

OBJECTIVES: To determine how often adult spinal deformity (ASD) surgery meets preoperative sagittal alignment goals and whether these corrections are durable over time, including the impact of planning frameworks and enabling technologies. METHODS: We performed a PRISMA-guided search of MEDLINE, EMBASE, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and Scopus through June 2025. Eligible studies enrolled adults undergoing ASD surgery where preoperative alignment targets were defined by numeric thresholds (e.g., SVA, PI-LL, PT), algorithmic frameworks (e.g., Roussouly, GAP), or technology-assisted modaliti

[Postural effect of vestibular galvanic stimulation in patients with Parkinson's disease and camptocormia: Case series].

The objective of this paper is to explore the postural effect of galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS) in camptocormia. It is a retrospective case series of 7 Parkinson disease and camptocormia patients. Binaural monopolar GVS was administered. Main outcome variable was trunk forward flexion (TFF), assessed pre and immediately post GVS, and one month after. The TFF was assessed in the standing position, with open and closed eyes. The Berg balance scale was assessed before and 1 month after GVS. The TFF immediately after the GVS showed a reduction of 2.3 cm (p = 0.091) in the first reading, and

Camptocormia as the presenting symptom in sporadic late onset nemaline myopathy: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Camptocormia has been reported in a plethora of diseases comprising disorders of the central nervous system, the peripheral nervous system, and the neuromuscular junction as well as hereditary and acquired myopathies. In sporadic late onset nemaline myopathy concomitant axial myopathy is common, but reports about camptocormia as the only presenting symptom in this condition are very rare. Notably, sporadic late onset nemaline myopathy is a potentially treatable condition in particular when associated with monoclonal gammopathy of unknown significance, HIV or rheumatological disorde

Measurement of camptocormia trunk flexion using a dual-sensor measurement setup.

Assessing the flexion of the trunk of patients with camptocormia is a key factor in developing therapies for camptocormia and monitoring their success. Currently used methods to measure this camptocormia angle are based on photographs or short videos. Both methods are not able to take the ability of patients into account to compensate their symptoms for short amounts of time. We propose a simple two sensor measurement setup based on two accelerometers to measure the angle in accordance with the established perpendicular measurement method [1]. We show that our method yields an average deviatio

The Nuances of Pedicle Subtraction Osteotomies.

In adult spinal deformity, the pedicle subtraction osteotomy is a useful technique to provide correction, especially in rigid, previously fused spines. However, it is not without its complications. In an effort to prevent pseudoarthrosis, a new technique using 4 rods has been pioneered to decrease stress on the 2 long rods while allowing for maintenance of correction with 2 smaller rods. One should also use careful neuromonitoring, especially during closure, to be able to make adjustments in time to prevent the development of neurologic deficits. Nevertheless, significant correction can be ach

Transpsoas Approach Nuances.

The transpsoas approach is a powerful tool in correcting adult spinal deformity secondary to the degenerative process. It may be used as a stand-alone construct or in combination with other approaches to correct both coronal and sagittal malalignment. Preoperative planning with careful analysis of full-length 36-in radiographs and an MRI of the lumbar spine is essential in determining the safety and feasibility of this approach. Ultimately the goals of deformity correction must be achieved, and lateral lumbar interbody fusion is a valuable tool that can aid in achieving these goals while minim

Multilevel Schwab grade II osteotomies for sagittal plane correction in the management of adult spinal deformity.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Prior reports have compared posterior column osteotomies with pedicle subtraction osteotomies in terms of utility for correcting fixed sagittal imbalance in adolescent patients with deformity. No prior reports have described the use of multilevel Smith-Petersen Osteotomies (SPOs) alone for surgical correction in the adult spinal deformity (ASD) population. PURPOSE: The study aimed to determine the utility of multilevel SPOs in the management of global sagittal imbalance in ASD patients. STUDY DESIGN/SETTING: This is a retrospective observational study at a single academic

Anterior column realignment following lateral interbody fusion for sagittal deformity correction.

Degenerative and iatrogenic diseases may lead to loss of lordosis or even kyphotic thoracolumbar deformity and sagittal misalignment. Traditional surgery with three-column osteotomies is associated with important neurologic risks and postoperative morbidity. In a novel technique, the lateral transpsoas interbody fusion (LTIF) is complemented with the sacrifice of the anterior longitudinal ligament and anterior portion of the annulus followed by the insertion of a hyperlordotic interbody cage. This is a less invasive lateral technique named anterior column realignment (ACR) and aims to correct
