A new zinc(ii) complex with a condensed hydroxynaphthyl pyridine (SPHN) as the coordinated ligand has been synthesized for the selective recognition of pyrophosphate (PPi) over other anions including phosphate in a mixed aqueous solution. The fluorescence enhancement of SPHN in association with Zn(2+) ions is quenched in the presence of intracellular pyrophosphate. This phenomenon is utilized in the construction of a logic gate. Deposits of trace or toxic metals can be quickly identified by light microscopical surveys of tissue sections stained for metals by variants of Timm's silver enhancement method. The present work shows that the small, isolated silver grains that label isolated deposits of metal in tissue are undetectable in brightfield light microscopy but are easily detected in darkfield microscopy. Darkfield illumination is therefore recommended for improving the detection of trace or toxic metals in tissue.

A rapid dimethyl sulfoxide modification of an acid-fast technique was applied to direct fecal smears to monitor cryptosporidiosis in nonhuman primates. Brilliantly stained pink oocysts against a pale green background demonstrated well-preserved internal morphology and facilitated rapid, simple, noninvasive diagnosis without fluorescent or phase-contrast microscopy.

The needle aspirate of abdominal fat was investigated for its sensitivity in giving a tissue diagnosis in 32 consecutive patients with systemic amyloidosis. The fat tissue aspirate was stained with Congo red and examined with a polarizing microscope. Positive results were obtained in 95% (18/19) of patients with primary (AL) amyloidosis, 66% (4/6) of patients with secondary (AA) amyloidosis, and 86% (6/7) of patients with the heredofamilial (AF) form.
