Spontaneous eye-blinking and stereotyped behavior in older persons with mental retardation.

Previous research indicates that abnormal stereotyped movements are associated with central dopamine dysfunction and that eye-blink rate is a noninvasive, in vivo measure of dopamine function. We measured the spontaneous eye-blinking and stereotyped behavior of older adults with severe/profound mental retardation living in a state mental retardation facility. Analyses revealed that the mean eye-blink rate of the residents that engaged in stereotypy was significantly lower than the rate for residents who did not exhibit stereotypy. Moreover, the stereotypy group also demonstrated greater variab

Challenging gender stereotypes in the counselling of adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse.

When working with adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse, the pairing of client with practitioner has implications for both parties. Many … e interviews were also conducted. Key themes emerged from the study. These were social and cultural stereotyping, gender specific issues, the therapeutic relationship, service and professional issues and special opinions and unique angles. The terms 'therapist' and 'practitioner' will be used interchangeably in this paper.

Stereotypes as dominant responses: on the "social facilitation" of prejudice in anticipated public contexts.

This article challenges the highly intuitive assumption that prejudice should be less likely in public compared with private settings. It proposes that stereotypes may be conceptualized as a type of dominant response (C. L. Hull, 1943; R. B. Zajonc, 1965) whose expression may be enhanced in public settings, especially among individuals high in social anxiety. Support was found for this framework in an impression formation paradigm (Experiment 1) and in a speeded task designed to measure stereotypic errors in perceptual identification (Experiment 2). Use of the process dissociation procedure (B

Circadian rhythm of stereotyped complex behaviours in rats in environmental lead exposure.

1. Stereotyped complex behaviours are present in a number of psychotic illnesses, neurological diseases and even can be generated in response to chemical environment (e.g., drugs or toxins). 2. The circadian rhythm of complex behaviours such as, rearing, preening, scratching and biting/licking was evaluated in an open-field situation in rats exposed to lead (2% lead acetate in drinking water for 30 days). 3. The circadian rhythm of rearing patterns showed depressions from 2 to 14 hr on day 3 and 13, and from 2-6 hr on day 23 (it elevated at 10 hr), whereas increased pattern was apparent at all

A quantity of stereotyped behavior of ddY mice induced by low-dose methamphetamine.

It is reported that high-dose methamphetamine (8 mg/kg) induces stereotyped behavior in ddY mice in an open field, but it is still not certain that low-dose methamphetamine (less than 2 mg/kg) can induce the stereotyped behavior in ddY mice in a narrow space. In order to investigate the problem, we evaluated the quantity of stereotyped behavior of ddY mice by using a mouse wheel-running apparatus. In this method, we have come to recognize an increase in the stereotyped behavior depending on the dose of methamphetamine and the reverse-tolerance phenomenon as a decrease in the wheel-revolution c

Definition of abnormal focused affections and exploration of their relation to abnormal stereotyped behaviors.

The relation between abnormal stereotyped behaviors and abnormal focused affections (i.e., abnormally consistent preferences for specific objects, symbols, and/or physical locations) was examined in 20 children with developmental disabilities. Results indicated that (a) all children who exhibited abnormal focused affections exhibited stereotypies; (b) abnormal focused affections could be studied reliably in individuals with developmental disabilities through the use of direct time-sampling observations, naturalistic observations, and informant reports; and (c) developmental age was significant

Use of clomipramine to treat ritualistic stereotypic motor behavior in three dogs.

Atypical, stereotypic motor and locomotor behavior was observed in 3 dogs. In 1 dog, the behavior included circling, vocalization, and snapping; in another, circling associated with pica and aerophagia; and in a third, gradually intensifying locomotor behavior stimulated by bright light. This behavior interfered with normal interaction between their owners and the dogs, and has been associated with obsessive-compulsive disorders. Treatment with clomipramine, along with other psychotropic medications and behavioral modification, suppressed the inappropriate behavior in all dogs; in 2 of the 3 d

[Cholinergic modulation on stereotyped behavior and behavioral hypersensitivity (reverse tolerance) in rats].

The failure in the mutual balance between striatal/mesolimbic dopaminergic neurons and the inhibitory system, and a decreased activity of mesocortical dopaminergic neurons may account for biological base of paranoid schizophrenia. We tested this hypothesis by investigating stereotyped behavior and "reverse tolerance" in dopaminergic supersensitivity co-existing with a low-level activity of the inhibitory cholinergic system induced by the chronic administration of methamphetamine (MAP) 4 mg/kg in combination with scopolamine (SCOP) 0.5 mg/kg, in male Wistar rats. For investigating the influence

Stereotype threat effects on deaf and hard-of-hearing college students' mathematics performance.

This study examined whether stereotype threat degrades deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) college students' math performance. The DHH participants self-assigned their social identity as "deaf" or "hard of hearing" irrespective of audiological assessment. Social identity is central to experiencing stereotype threat and being deaf or hard of hearing may activate negative biases which trigger a stereotype threat that impacts test performance. A sample of college students (216 deaf, 128 hard of hearing, 152 hearing) were randomly assigned to either a stereotype threat or no-threat test condition and t

Stereotypic behaviors across species: From neurobiological mechanisms to farm animal welfare.

Stereotypic behaviors, characterized by repetitive, fixed, and seemingly functionless behavioral patterns, are critical indicator of compromised animal welfare and neuropsychiatric disorders. While stereotypic behaviors have been extensively studied in humans and laboratory animals, the neurobiological mechanisms of farm animals and their cross-species commonalities remain to be systematically elucidated. This review summarizes the progress in the research on stereotypic behaviors, with a particular focus on comparing the phenotypic similarities among humans, laboratory animals, and farm anima

#OCD: A Content Analysis of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder Stereotype Amplification and Misinformation on TikTok.

Misinformation regarding the symptoms and treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) has persisted for decades, influencing public perceptions and propagating misconceptions. Content posted on social media regarding mental health conditions, like OCD, impacts the health information ecosystem, as consumers can find it difficult to distinguish factual information from misleading generalizations. This study examines the quality of OCD-related content on TikTok, with a focus on the prevalence of misinformation and its potential impact on viewers. We analyzed the top videos tagged with #OCD,

Gustatory receptors interact with the serotonin pathway to regulate silkmoth stereotyped courtship behavior.

BACKGROUND: Gustatory receptors (GRs) are known to mediate responses to various chemical stimuli including sugars and bitter compounds and sex pheromones. Although numerous types of GRs have been identified across insect species, the physiological roles of most GRs remain largely unknown. The silkworm, Bombyx mori, is representative of the order Lepidoptera, which includes over 70% of agriculturally important pest species. A notable feature of GRs in B. mori is that most GRs are organized in clusters, making them highly suitable for large-scale genetic studies. RESULTS: Here we developed a tr

The flexible, the stereotyped and the in-between: putting together the combinatory tool use origins hypothesis.

Tool use research has long made the distinction between tool using that is considered learned and flexible, and that which appears to be instinctive and stereotyped. However, animals with an inherited tool use specialisation can exhibit flexibility, while tool use that is spontaneously innovated can be limited in its expression and facilitated by predispositions for ecological specialisations. Furthermore, recent evidence does not support the proposed division of flexible tool use along primate-bird taxonomic lines. Instead, we hypothesise that tool use is a more complementary phenomenon than

Effect of familiarity and knowledge about epilepsy on associated cultural stereotypes in French society.

People with epilepsy face stigma that impacts numerous aspects of their daily lives. Although the stigma surrounding people with epilepsy has been extensively documented, the mechanisms underlying it-such as cultural stereotypes-remain to be explored. Cultural stereotypes are widely shared beliefs within a cultural context about attributes typically associated with members of a particular group. This study, conducted within French society, has two primary objectives: 1) to define the content of cultural stereotypes associated with people suffering from epilepsy and 2) to examine how familiarit

The effect of questioning gender stereotype threat on girl's standing long jump performance.

BACKGROUND: Over the past few years, the sport psychology literature has established that gender stereotype threat (ST) is one of the factors that can impair girls' performance. However, few studies have attempted to annihilate these negative effects. The purpose of the current study was to investigate whether questioning gender ST can mitigate the classical decline in girls' standing long jump (SLJ) performance. METHODS: The participants were 120 girls (Mage = 10.74 ± 0.85 years), selected through convenience sampling and randomly assigned to three groups: the gender ST group (n = 40), the q

Mapping the developmental structure of stereotyped and individual-unique behavioral spaces in C. elegans.

Developmental patterns of behavior are variably organized in time and among different individuals. However, long-term behavioral diversity was previously studied using pre-defined behavioral parameters, representing a limited fraction of the full individuality structure. Here, we continuously extract ∼1.2 billion body postures of ∼2,200 single C. elegans individuals throughout their full development time to create a complete developmental atlas of stereotyped and individual-unique behavioral spaces. Unsupervised inference of low-dimensional movement modes of each single individual identifies a

Competition and stereotypic behavior in Thoroughbred horses: The value of saliva as a diagnostic marker of stress.

Many horses exhibit stereotypies, especially when living in human controlled environments that may prevent horses from satisfying natural needs in terms of feeding, drinking, moving, and socializing. In human medicine, obsessive compulsive disorder and other severe psychiatric disturbances are associated with stereotypic behaviors; salivary biomarkers evaluation is considered a reliable tool for diagnosis of common mental health disorders because saliva collection easy to obtain and noninvasive. In this study, we hypothesized that salivary cortisol concentrations, in addition to alpha-amylase

Genetic Lesions in Russian CLL Patients with the Most Common Stereotyped Antigen Receptors.

Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is one of the most common B-cell malignancies in Western countries. IGHV mutational status is the most important prognostic factor for this disease. CLL is characterized by an extreme narrowing of the IGHV genes repertoire and the existence of subgroups of quasi-identical stereotyped antigenic receptors (SAR). Some of these subgroups have already been identified as independent prognostic factors for CLL. Here, we report the frequencies of TP53, NOTCH1, and SF3B1 gene mutations and chromosomal aberrations assessed by NGS and FISH in 152 CLL patients with the m

How exposure to patient narratives affects stereotyped choices of primary care clinicians.

In this paper, we examine whether patient narratives alter the impact of stereotyping on choice of primary care clinicians: in this case, the common presumption that female doctors will be more attentive to empathic relationships with patients. 1052 individuals were selected from a nationally representative Internet panel to participate in a survey experiment. Participants were given performance data about 12 fictitious primary care physicians, including a randomized set of narrative feedback from patients. We compared the choice of clinician made by participants who value bedside manner and w…
