Articular cartilage lesions of the patellofemoral joint in dogs with naturally occurring cranial cruciate ligament disease.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate frequency, severity, and location of patellofemoral (PF) osteoarthritis (OA) in dogs with naturally occurring cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) disease. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional observational study. ANIMALS: Dogs (n = 40; stifles, 44). METHODS: Stifle arthroscopic video recordings and radiographs were performed. Cartilage pathology was scored at 3 locations (proximal, middle, distal) in the trochlear groove and patella. A radiographic osteoarthrosis and synovial pathology score were assigned. A Kruskal-Wallis test was used to determine if lesion severity varied by

Kinetic, kinematic, magnetic resonance and owner evaluation of dogs before and after the amputation of a hind limb.

BACKGROUND: The amputation of a limb is a surgical procedure that is regularly performed in small animal practice. In spite of several clinical reports indicating high owner satisfaction after limb amputation in dogs, an amputation is still very critically seen by the owners, and even by some veterinarians, due to the lack of accurate information about the recovery of amputee patients. Thus, the objective of this study was to prospectively evaluate, both objectively and subjectively, the recovery outcome of dogs undergoing a hind limb amputation. Twelve patients in which a hind limb amputation

Long-term functional outcome after surgical repair of cranial cruciate ligament disease in dogs.

BACKGROUND: Cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) rupture is a very common cause of pelvic limb lameness in dogs. Few studies, using objective and validated outcome evaluation methods, have been published to evaluate long-term (>1 year) outcome after CCL repair. A group of 47 dogs with CCL rupture treated with intracapsular, extracapsular, and osteotomy techniques, and 21 healthy control dogs were enrolled in this study. To evaluate long-term surgical outcome, at a minimum of 1.5 years after unilateral CCL surgery, force plate, orthopedic, radiographic, and physiotherapeutic examinations, including

Effect of distal femoral growth plate fusion on femoral-tibial length.

Unilateral distal femoral epiphysiodesis in seven 10 week old crossbred Doberman Pinscher littermates resulted in a significant (p less than or equal to 0.0001) femoral length deficit of 23.5% without clinically detectable alterations in gait up to 42 weeks after surgery. In addition to compensatory hyperextension of the stifle joint, the ipsilateral tibia showed significant (p less than or equal to 0.0001) acceleration in longitudinal growth. The combined femoral-tibial length at necropsy was still significantly shorter (p less than or equal to 0.0001) in the treated leg than in the control l

Contralateral cruciate survival in dogs with unilateral non-contact cranial cruciate ligament rupture.

BACKGROUND: Non-contact cranial cruciate ligament rupture (CrCLR) is an important cause of lameness in client-owned dogs and typically occurs without obvious injury. There is a high incidence of bilateral rupture at presentation or subsequent contralateral rupture in affected dogs. Although stifle synovitis increases risk of contralateral CrCLR, relatively little is known about risk factors for subsequent contralateral rupture, or whether therapeutic intervention may modify this risk. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We conducted a longitudinal study examining survival of the contralateral CrC

Arthroscopy of the normal cadaveric ovine femorotibial joint: a systematic approach to the cranial and caudal compartments.

OBJECTIVES: Preclinical studies using large animal models play an intergral part in translational research. For this study, our objectives were: to develop and validate arthroscopic approaches to four compartments of the stifle joint as determined via the gross and arthroscopic anatomy of the cranial and caudal aspects of the joint. METHODS: Cadaveric hindlimbs (n = 39) were harvested from mature ewes. The anatomy was examined by tissue dissection (n = 6), transverse sections (n = 4), and computed tomography (n = 4). The joint was arthroscopically explored in 25 hindlimbs. RESULTS: A cranio-

Modified Tibial Tuberosity Advancement Rapid in a Dog with One Contralateral Amputated Limb.

Cranial cruciate ligament disease (CCLD) is one of the most frequent causes of hindlimb lameness in dogs. Tibial tuberosity advancement (TTA) is a common surgery performed for CCLD. A modified, simplified technique (TTA Rapid) is also reported to have very good clinical outcomes. In this paper, we report a modified TTA Rapid technique to treat a CCLD in a dog with an amputated contralateral hindlimb. A 5-year-old mixed breed dog presented with amputated right hindlimb and difficulty walking. Pain and positive drawer sign were present at manipulation of left stifle joint. Radiographic findings

The effectiveness of 3D animations to enhance understanding of cranial cruciate ligament rupture.

Cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) rupture is one of the most important orthopedic diseases taught to veterinary undergraduates. The complexity of the anatomy of the canine stifle joint combined with the plethora of different surgical interventions available for the treatment of the disease means that undergraduate veterinary students often have a poor understanding of the pathophysiology and treatment of CCL rupture. We designed, developed, and tested a three dimensional (3D) animation to illustrate the pertinent clinical anatomy of the stifle joint, the effects of CCL rupture, and the mechanism

Relationship between the stage of osteoarthritis before and six months after tibial tuberosity advancement procedure in dogs.

The present retrospective study evaluated the progression of osteoarthritis in stifle joints based on the radiographic grade of osteoarthritis (OA) scored in dogs with cranial cruciate ligament rupture. The aim of the study was to search for a correlation between the stage of radiographic osteoarthritis prior to surgery and the osteoarthritis progression occurring after the tibial tuberosity advancement (TTA) procedure. It was hypothesized that the procedure carried out in dogs in the early stages of OA could reduce the OA changes. A total of 190 X-ray images obtained from the medical records
