Bochdalek's hernia is infrequent in adults. We communicate the case of a 22 year old male that was admitted at hospital because of a thoracic pain of sudden onset. In the exploration there was pain in left hypochondrium non tolerating decubitus. Thorax radiology showed an "arched" image in left pulmonary base and pleural shedding. The patient underwent a surgical procedure in which a great gastric herniation was found, which forced a total gastrectomy.

We have presented a case of mesenteroaxial volvulus in a 12-year-old girl. Since this entity is rare in children, one must be especially alert to its possibility for early diagnosis and treatment of this potential catastrophe.

Large esophageal and paraesophageal gastric herniations may occasionally produce gastric obstruction and strangulation. Seven cases of gastric intrathoracic herniation of varying degree, including 2 with obstruction, are presented with diagrams of the anatomy in each case. The cases with obstruction are discussed in relation to existing theories of the mechanism of obstruction: (a) tightness of the hernial ring; (b) acute volvulis of the herniated stomach; and (c) subdiaphragmatic redescent of the fundus with fundic distension and crowding of the hernial orifice. It is concluded that the last

BACKGROUND: First described in the pediatric population in 1899 by Oltmann, pediatric gastric volvulus is a rare disease, but carries a high mortality rate. Due to vague signs and symptoms it can easily be mistaken for gastroenteritis or appendicitis, but unique radiographic findings can help illuminate the diagnosis. The pathophysiology of gastric volvulus is related to an abnormality in the attachment of at least one of the gastric ligaments, which can occur either primarily or secondarily. The abnormality in these ligaments allows the stomach to freely rotate, eventually causing an obstruct

Twenty-five patients with acute gastric volvulus were studied. The two types, organoaxial and mesenteroaxial, are compared with respect to clinical characteristics, diagnosis, pathogenesis and treatment. An understanding of the varied features, including both thoracic and abdominal manifestations, is essential to early recognition and prompt treatment. In addition to Borchardt's triad, this study suggests three important features: (1) minimal abdominal findings when the stomach is in the thorax; (2) a gas-filled viscus in the lower chest or upper abdomen shown by chest radiography (Figure 8),

Acute gastric volvulus in the newborn period is a rare condition requiring surgery. The association of gastric volvulus with congenital bands is extremely rare and unreported previously. A one-day-old male neonate was diagnosed to have acute gastric obstruction in the neonatal intensive care unit. Mesenteroaxial gastric volvulus due to dense gastrocolic bands was detected during laparotomy. Band excision and anterior gastropexy were performed. The clinical features, radiologic findings, treatment modes and possible mechanisms of gastric volvulus due to congenital bands are discussed.

We report a 45-year-old lady who presented with recurrent vomiting, retching and epigastric pain, and was diagnosed to have gastric volvulus. After correction of the volvulus by endoscopic detorsion, a tumor was seen along the greater curvature. This was excised surgically. Histology showed leiomyoma.

Background and Clinical Significance: Fetal jejunoileal atresia is a congenital anomaly of the lower digestive tract. Subsequent small intestinal volvulus, which may occur secondary to intestinal malrotation or atresia, represents a common cause of neonatal intestinal obstruction. The synthesis of intestinal atresia and volvulus is a dynamic, progressive process with distinct imaging features at each stage. Serial fetal ultrasound can detect abnormalities, and imaging changes may evolve from the initial onset of atresia to the development of volvulus. Case Presentation: We report the clinical

We report a neonate who presented with failure to thrive, non-bilious vomiting and upper abdominal distension starting at one week of age. A barium upper GI study confirmed the diagnosis of organoaxial volvulus of the stomach, and the child underwent a successful laparoscopic gastropexy. At one year of follow-up the child is asymptomatic. We discuss the technique and review the literature.

This is the report of a newborn girl who was treated by "trial of life" before surgical repair of her left-sided diaphragmatic hernia. Surgery was performed 60 hours after birth, at which time she was found to have an organo-axial volvulus of the stomach. Her postoperative course was complicated by a jejunal perforation on the fourth postoperative day, necessitating another laparotomy.

Gastric volvulus in children might be observed both as an acute form, characterized by gastric necrosis with sudden perforation and patient's death and as an idiopathic or chronic form with a less severe insurgence that causes epigastric pain, vomit and gastric distension. The latter could resolve spontaneously but recurs frequently. The acute form rises in newborns and toddlers and is often associated with a diaphragmatic defect; the idiopathic forms are correlated on the opposite to a fixation deficit of the stomach which is held in place by the gastro-colic, gastro-hepatic, gastro phrenic a

A brachycephalic dog was presented with an acute onset of retching and abdominal discomfort. The dog had a chronic history of stertor and exercise intolerance suggestive of brachycephalic airway obstructive syndrome. Radiographs were consistent with a Type II hiatal hernia. The dog was referred and within hours of admission became acutely painful and developed tympanic abdominal distension. A right lateral abdominal radiograph confirmed gastric dilatation and volvulus with herniation of the pylorus through the hiatus. An emergency exploratory coeliotomy was performed, during which the stomach

BACKGROUND: Once paraesophageal hernia has been diagnosed, it should be repaired immediately because of life-threatening complications such as bleeding, ischemia, and perforation when intrathoracic strangulation or volvulus occurs. We describe our surgical strategy for treating this rare type of hiatal hernia with regard to early and late postoperative complications.
STUDY DESIGN: This was a retrospective case series from a university hospital. Twelve patients (seven women and five men) with a mean age of 64 years (range, 50-76 years) and a completely intrathoracic stomach underwent laparosco

We report three infants who presented with acute gastric volvulus and recovered initially after de-torsion, but later presented with sequelae due to ischemia of gastroesophageal junction, stomach and gastroduodenal junction. The first two infants could not be fed orally or by gastrostomy tube because of microgastria and stricture of the lower esophagus and gastroduodenal junction, and were managed on jejunostomy feeds, while the third child was managed on gastrostomy feeds till the gastric substitution surgery. The first case was treated nonsurgically with repeated dilatations, but ultimately

Gastric volvulus is a rare surgical emergency characterized by the rotation of the stomach by more than 180° along one of its axes, which can result in significant upper gastrointestinal obstruction. If not promptly treated, it can lead to severe complications and carries a considerable risk of morbidity and mortality. Clinically, patients typically present with epigastric pain, nausea, and vomiting of gastrointestinal contents. Diagnosis is primarily based on the patient's history and clinical presentation, with confirmation through imaging studies. Definitive treatment is surgical. We report

A healthy 45-year-old woman with a previous Roux-en-Y gastric bypass presented with the signs, symptoms and blood analysis results consistent with acute pancreatitis. She was initially treated nonoperatively and subsequently went into circulatory shock. Computerized tomographic scan and exploratory laparotomy revealed a volvulus of the afferent jejunal limb with secondary obstruction, necrosis, and perforation of the bypassed stomach.

A 10-year-old male red panda presented acutely with symptoms of shock due to acute abdominal distress and respiratory compromise. Abdominal ultrasound confirmed a severely distended stomach for which passage of an orogastric tube for relief was unsuccessful. Intra-operatively, the stomach was found to be distended and torsed around its long axis supporting the diagnosis of Gastric dilitation-volvulus (GDV). The animal arrested and died intra-operatively and was submitted for necropsy with lesions supportive of the diagnosis of GDV. No risk factors for GDV were found to correlate between the pa

OBJECTIVE: Gastric blunt traumatic injuries are uncommon and their radiological appearance has been infrequently reported in medical literature. These injuries are difficult to diagnose preoperatively, though they require immediate recognition to minimize their otherwise high mortality and morbidity. The aim of our study is to describe the radiological appearance of blunt gastric traumatic injuries.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective evaluation of a 25 patients series observed between January 1997 and May 2005.
RESULTS: We observed rupture of the stomach in 20% of cases, in 44% of cases a
