Immunopathogenesis of oral lichen planus and recurrent aphthous stomatitis.

Oral mucosal bullous/desquamative/ulcerative diseases involve immunopathological mechanisms that account for loss of adhesion between contiguous keratinocytes or to structures within the basal lamina. Some are antibody mediated, in which specific adhesion molecules of the desmosome, hemidesmosome, and basement membrane become antigenic targets. Oral lichen planus and recurrent apthous ulcers, although manifesting disparate clinical appearances and natural history, share immunopathological features that involve T cell-mediated immunity. Although the antigens, haptens, or autoantigens are not us

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis: clinical characteristics and associated systemic disorders.

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS), commonly known as canker sores, has been reported as recurrent oral ulcers, recurrent aphthous ulcers, or simple or complex aphthosis. RAS is the most common inflammatory ulcerative condition of the oral mucosa in North American patients. One of its variants is the most painful condition of the oral mucosa. Recurrent aphthous stomatitis has been the subject of active investigation along multiple lines of research, including epidemiology, immunology, clinical correlations, and therapy. Clinical evaluation of the patient requires correct diagnosis of RAS and …

Chronic ulcerative stomatitis with stratified epithelium-specific antinuclear antibodies.

BACKGROUND: In 1990 a new disease-associated antinuclear antibody was first recognized as a specific immunologic marker for a chronic form of ulcerative stomatitis (CUS). METHODS: Another case is reported herein and the subject of chronic ulcerative stomatitis with stratified epithelium-specific antinuclear antibodies (SES-ANA) is reviewed. Intraoral biopsies from this patient were submitted for microscopic examination and direct immunofluorescence. Indirect immunofluorescence studies were also performed. Serial SES-ANA titers were obtained with the patient on maintenance treatment with hydro…

Cinnamon-induced stomatitis venenata, Clinical and characteristic histopathologic features.

Fourteen new cases of cinnamon-induced stomatitis are reported. Ten of these fourteen cases were first detected on the basis of histopathologic changes, which included hyperkeratosis, chronic lichenoid mucositis with plasmacytic infiltration, and marked chronic perivasculitis. Six cases of false-positive histopathologic findings are presented for comparison. It is recommended that when the histopathologic features described are recognized, cinnamon stomatitis should be considered.

Role of mucosal injury in initiating recurrent aphthous stomatitis.

The buccal mucosa of 30 patients with recurrent aphthous stomatitis and 15 healthy controls was injured by suture and penetration with a tenaculum and a hypodermic needle and each of the six puncture wounds produced monitored for up to seven days for the development of ulcers. Altogether 26 lesions were induced in 13 patients, whereas none occurred in the controls (p less than 0.001). Sutures caused most of the lesions (15), and those so induced had a mean maximum diameter of 2.3 mm and lasted for an average of four days. Ulcers induced mechanically were clinically indistinguishable from those…

Functional validation of EXLB1 in leaf and stomatal development in tobacco.

Leaf morphological traits are the key determinants of tobacco yield and stress responses, and cell wall synthesis and metabolism play an important role in leaf development. However, the underlying regulatory mechanism of cell wall on leaf morphology remains largely unknown in tobacco. Here, we compared two pairs of tobacco cultivars (DMC vs. DX3 and DMC vs. WM3) with distinct leaf traits, and identified a cell wall-related expansin gene, NtEXLB1, based on transcriptome data analysis. The homolog NbEXLB1 from N. benthamiana is highly expressed in the mature leaf, and the NbEXLB1 protein is loca

Functional analysis of HvSNAC1 in stomatal dynamics and drought adaptation.

Drought stress can damage crop growth and lead to a decline in yield, thereby affecting food security, especially in regions vulnerable to climate change. SNAC1 (stress-responsive NAC1), the NAC transcription factor family member, plays a crucial role in stomatal movement regulation. Effective regulation of stomatal movement is essential for protecting plants from water loss during adverse conditions. Our hypothesis revolves around altering HvSNAC1 activity by introducing a point mutation in its encoding gene, thereby influencing stomatal dynamics in barley. Two TILLING mutants, each harboring

The effect of Hippophae rhamnoides on Hydroxychloroquine-Induced stomatitis in rats.

BACKGROUND: Stomatitis is the most common mucosal side effect associated with Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ). Hippophae Rhamnoides (HR) is known to contain several phytonutrients, including anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. This study aimed whether HR can mitigate HCQ-induced oxidative stress and inflammation in rat cheek tissue and to corroborate biochemical findings with macroscopic and histopathological evaluations. METHODS: Twenty four rats were used and split into four groups: healthy control group (HG), receiving HR alone, receiving HCQ alone, and receiving both HR and HCQ (HRHQ)…

Evaluation of biochemical variables in patients with recurrent aphthous stomatitis.

PURPOSE: We investigated the effects of various biochemical agents on the etiopathogenesis of recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS). METHODS: We enrolled 70 RAS patients and 70 healthy volunteers. Peripheral venous blood samples were collected. We performed complete blood counts, then measured the levels of ferritin, vitamin B12, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, calcium, thyroid-stimulating hormone, T3, T4, and 25-hydroxy D3. RESULTS: The groups did not differ in terms of age (p = 0.912) or sex (p = 0.612). The levels of ferritin and 25-hydroxy vitamin D were significantly lower in RAS patients (b…

Atomic model of vesicular stomatitis virus and mechanism of assembly.

Like other negative-strand RNA viruses (NSVs) such as influenza and rabies, vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) has a three-layered organization: a layer of matrix protein (M) resides between the glycoprotein (G)-studded membrane envelope and the nucleocapsid, which is composed of the nucleocapsid protein (N) and the encapsidated genomic RNA. Lack of in situ atomic structures of these viral components has limited mechanistic understanding of assembling the bullet-shaped virion. Here, by cryoEM and sub-particle reconstruction, we have determined the in situ structures of M and N inside VSV at 3.47…

The 30th birthday of chronic ulcerative stomatitis: A systematic review.

OBJECTIVES: Chronic ulcerative stomatitis (CUS) is a chronic, ulcerative condition of the oral cavity, clinically and histologically similar to oral lichen planus (OLP), first described as a new disease entity in 1990 by Parodi et al. In this review, 30 years after our first description of CUS, we aimed to systematically review the literature of CUS cases reported ever since. METHODS: We present a systematic review of CUS literature cases, performed in compliance with the PRISMA statement. RESULTS: Of 125 retrieved articles, 20 satisfied inclusion criteria. These described 76 CUS cases, all …

Update on roles of nitric oxide in regulating stomatal closure.

Nitric oxide (NO) as an important secondary messager plays crucial roles in modulating stomatal movement, especially abscisic acid (ABA)-induced stomatal closure. Accumulating evidence indicates that NO positively and negatively regulates guard cell ABA signaling. NO is also implicated in stomatal closure mediated by hydrogen sulfide, small peptides, polyamines, and methyl jasmonate. In this review, we summarize recent advances on the roles and the underlying mechanisms of NO in regulating stomatal closure in plants.
