BACKGROUND: Rates of invasive group B Streptococcus (GBS; Streptococcus agalactiae) disease in adults are on the rise. Invasive GBS disease can be community- or healthcare-associated. We report an outbreak of GBS catheter-related bacteremia in a hemodialysis (HD) unit.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two patients undergoing HD at the same outpatient HD unit were admitted on the same day (within a few hours of each other) with catheter-related GBS bacteremia. A retrospective study was undertaken at the HD unit to address risk factors for febrile illness on the last HD session day. A detailed questionna…

Data are presented in this paper which show that endotoxin stimulated nonspecific resistance of mice to bacterial infections is not lost when the animals become tolerant to endotoxin and in some cases can be increased as the animals become more tolerant to endotoxin. Experiments are also presented which suggest that the specific antibodies to endotoxin that develop in the serum of tolerant animals may be unimportant in the development of the tolerance or in the enhancement of the nonspecific resistance.

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus agalactiae (Group B Streptococcus, GBS) is a leading cause of neonatal infections, exhibiting remarkable adaptability. This study aimed to characterize the virulence and resistance profiles of GBS isolates obtained from pregnant women in Porto Velho, Rondônia, within the Brazilian Amazon. GBS strains were isolated and identified from rectovaginal cultures using phenotypic and genotypic methods. Capsule typing and the detection of virulence and resistance genes were performed through polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Antimicrobial susceptibility profiles and in vitro bi…

PURPOSE: Neonatal sepsis caused by Streptococcus agalactiae [group B streptococcus (GBS)] is a life-threatening condition, which is preventable if colonized mothers are identified and given antibiotic prophylaxis during labour. Conventional culture is time consuming and unreliable, and many available non-culture diagnostics are too complex to implement routinely at point of care. Loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) is a method that, enables the rapid and specific detection of target nucleic acid sequences in clinical materials without the requirement for extensive sample preparation.…

Streptococcus agalactiae (GBS) has emerged as one of the most prevalent bacterial pathogens causing severe economic losses in tilapia aquaculture due to its highly contagious and lethal nature. Nanobodies (Nbs), characterized by their small molecular size, enhanced tissue penetration, high tolerance, and exceptional antigen-binding affinity, represent a promising green alternative to conventional antibiotics. In the present study, the objective was to explore the potential of specific Nbs in the treatment of tilapia GBS disease. We first screened specific Nbs targeting the surface immunogenic …

A captive male Linnaeus's two-toed sloth died without any obvious clinical signs. At necropsy, multifocal ulceration at the lumbar and perianal skin, mitral valve vegetation, and multifocal hemorrhage in the leptomeninges were observed. Histopathologically, suppurative meningo-ventriculitis, dermatitis, and endocarditis characterized by severe neutrophilic infiltration were observed. Gram-positive cocci arranged in pairs or chains were present in these inflammatory lesions. Streptococcus agalactiae gene was detected in the skin, heart, and brain tissues by PCR and sequence analysis. These find…

Septic arthritis is not a very frequent disease, but with a high morbidity due to the important sequelae that it can cause. The etiology is age-specific, with Staphylococcus aureus being the most frequent microorganism in all ages. Streptococcus agalactiae or group B Streptococcus is an uncommon cause of infection outside the neonatal period. Beyond 3 months of age, infections by this pathogen are associated with serious infections in immunocompromised patients. The treatment of choice is penicillin G or ampicillin. A 4.5-month-old child who developed a group B Streptococcus septic arthritis i…

Streptococcus agalactiae (group B streptococcus; GBS) is a colonizer of the gastrointestinal and urogenital tracts, and an opportunistic pathogen of infants and adults. The worldwide population of GBS is characterized by clonal complexes (CCs) with different invasive potentials. CC17, for example, is a hypervirulent lineage commonly associated with neonatal sepsis and meningitis, while CC1 is less invasive in neonates and more commonly causes invasive disease in adults with comorbidities. The genetic basis of GBS virulence and the extent to which different CCs have adapted to different host en…

The prevalence of quinolone- and macrolide-resistant Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is increasing worldwide, but the relationship between the resistance of GBS to these antibiotics and patient outcome remains unclear. Therefore, we evaluated whether blood stream infection caused by quinolone- or macrolide-resistant GBS is associated with high mortality. Our findings in 77 patients with GBS bacteremia demonstrate that quinolone and macrolide resistance may not be risk factors for 30-day mortality.

BACKGROUND: One of the main causes of sexually transmitted diseases is group B β- hemolytic streptococci (GBS) multiplying in the genital tracts. Penicillin is the most common drug for the treatment of infections caused by these bacteria, but in patients suffering from Penicillin allergy, Erythromycin and Clindamycin are used as alternative therapeutic drugs against GBS. Recently, resistance to these drugs has been reported more often. In this study, efforts have been made to determine the prevalence and antibiotic resistance of GBS.
METHODS: Modified Christie Atkins Munch-Petersen (CAMP) tes

INTRODUCTION: Streptococcus agalactiae is a well-recognized pathogen in the obstetric population and is a cause of invasive infection in adults with underlying diseases. Nevertheless, the role of S. agalactiae in urinary tract infections in the adult non-pregnant population treated in outpatient health care centers has been less extensively studied.
METHODS: The clinical significance of S. agalactiae isolation in urine samples from health care center patients was studied in five areas of Spain over a period of six months. The study protocol included the collection of personal, epidemiological…

The present study was performed to investigate both the identity and the source of the bacteria responsible for a fatal septicaemia observed in a group of three subadult emerald monitors (Varanus prasinus Schlegel 1839). The emerald monitors were necropsied and examined by light microscopy, including immunohistology, and by electron microscopy. Tissue samples were additionally submitted for bacteriological, virological and parasitological examinations. The virological and parasitological results were noncontributory, whereas the bacteriological investigation resulted in the isolation of gram-p

A total of 103 group B streptococci (GBS) including 22 invasive, 21 non-invasive, and 60 colonizing isolates were collected in a Malaysian hospital (June 2010-October 2011). Isolates were characterized by conventional and molecular serotyping and analyzed for scpB, lmb, hylB, cylE, bac, bca and rib gene content. Antimicrobial susceptibility to penicillins, macrolides, lincosamides, quinolones and tetracyclines was determined using disk diffusion and the MICs for penicillin were determined by E-test. Molecular serotyping for all eight serotypes (Ia, Ib, II-VII) was in full accordance with conve
