Post-traumatic Stress Disorder: A Narrative Review of Pharmacological and Psychotherapeutic Interventions.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a complex mental health condition affecting individuals exposed to traumatic events. This paper is a narrative review of the existing literature on pharmacological and psychotherapeutic interventions for PTSD. Treatment includes selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), and alpha-1 adrenergic receptor antagonists. By exploring the outcomes of these interventions, the review seeks to provide valuable insights into their potential as PTSD treatment options. The paper also highlights the importan

Association of Cardiovascular Diseases With Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder: An Updated Review.

The intricate relationship between post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) has garnered increasing attention due to its bidirectional impact and potential for significant health consequences. Epidemiological evidence suggests that PTSD may serve as a risk factor for incident CVD, while acute CVD events can trigger PTSD, subsequently increasing the risk of recurrent cardiovascular events. This dynamic interplay is characterized by the human stress response, disrupted behavioral and lifestyle factors, and potential physiological mechanisms. Notably, the immediate a

Oxytocin and Vasopressin Blood Levels in People with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

BACKGROUND: The neuroendocrine system and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis are among the possible neurobiological factors that may be involved in the emergence and persistence of post-traumatic stress disorder. Here, we determined the levels of vasopressin and oxytocin in the peripheral blood of people with post-traumatic stress disorder, investigating their correlation with post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms. METHODS: The study included patients with post-traumatic stress disorder according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders Version 4 and healthy control

Exploring the enigma of low prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder in India.

INTRODUCTION: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a chronic psychiatric condition associated with significant distress and dysfunction. While worldwide estimates of prevalence range from 3.9% to 24%, little research has been conducted to identify the prevalence of PTSD in the general population of India. This study analyzes data from the National Mental Health Survey 2015-2016, a comprehensive epidemiological study of mental health disorders in India, to explore the unique characteristics and prevalence of PTSD in the Indian population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The National Mental Health S

Assessment tools for complex post traumatic stress disorder: a systematic review.

Appropriate screening tools are required to accurately detect complex post traumatic stress disorder (CPTSD). This systematic review aimed to assess and compare measurement tools. A literature search using key words 'complex post traumatic stress disorder', 'PTSD', and 'assessment' was undertaken on Embase and PsychINFO during February 2022 by two reviewers. Inclusion criteria included full text papers between 2002-2022 which evaluated CPTSD using assessment tools. Exclusion criteria included reviews, editorials, meta-analyses, or conference abstracts. Twenty-two papers met selection criteria.

Laboratory models of post-traumatic stress disorder: The elusive bridge to translation.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a debilitating mental illness composed of a heterogeneous collection of symptom clusters. The unique nature of PTSD as arising from a precipitating traumatic event helps simplify cross-species translational research modeling the neurobehavioral effects of stress and fear. However, the neurobiological progress on these complex neural circuits informed by animal models has yet to produce novel, evidence-based clinical treatment for PTSD. Here, we provide a comprehensive overview of popular laboratory models of PTSD and provide concrete ideas for improving

Late fetal demise, a risk factor for post-traumatic stress disorder.

Late-term fetal demise including fetal death in utero, late miscarriage and late termination of pregnancy are relatively frequent occurrences. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a pathology that finds its roots in exposure to a life-threatening event or an event related to death. Exposure to fetal death during a late-term fetal demise is, therefore, a situation at risk of trauma. The objective of this study was to assess the prevalence of PTSD symptoms in the short term among patients faced with late fetal demise, and to identify potential risk factors. All women were assessed at 15 days

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Among U.S. Army Drone Operators.

INTRODUCTION: Exposure to traumatic events could increase post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) risk among enlisted U.S. Army drone operators. Published research on PTSD risk in this population is unavailable.METHODS: We used a combined medical and administrative longitudinal dataset to examine adjusted associations between drone operator service among U.S. Army enlisted members and three PTSD indicators: whether screened via the PTSD Checklist - Civilian (PCL-C); PCL-C scores; and incident PTSD diagnoses. We compiled summary statistics for and conducted tests of differences in independent var

Study on the changes of Structural Covariance Network in post-traumatic stress disorder.

The topological properties of functional brain networks in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) have been thoroughly examined, whereas the topology of structural covariance networks has been researched much less. Based on graph theoretical approaches, we investigated the topological architecture of structural covariance networks among PTSD, trauma-exposed controls (TEC), and healthy controls (HC) by constructing covariance networks driven by inter-regional correlations of cortical thickness. Structural magnetic resonance imaging (sMRI) scans and clinical scales were performed on 27 PTSD, 33 T

Prevalence and correlates of self-stigma in Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

BACKGROUND: Self-stigma refers to the internalisation of negative societal views and stereotypes. Self-stigma has been well-characterised in the context of mental disorders such as schizophrenia but has received little attention in relation to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). OBJECTIVE: This work aimed to determine the prevalence of self-stigma in a sample of adults with PTSD and to establish factors associated with the internalisation of stigma in this population. METHOD: Participants were 194 adults (mean age 46.07 (SD = 12.39); 64.4% female; 96.6% white Caucasian; residing in the UK

A Study on the Factors Affecting Anger in Patients With Post-traumatic Stress Disorder.

OBJECTIVE: To identify the factors affecting anger in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) patients who underwent Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale (CAPS) and Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 (MMPI-2). METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed patients who underwent CAPS and MMPI-2 at Veteran Health Service Medical Center, Seoul, Korea. Based on the CAPS score, the patients were divided into the PTSD group (n=46) and the trauma exposed without PTSD group (n=29). After checking the correlation between anger, CAPS, and MMPI-2 scales, logistic regression analysis was performed to identi

Mitochondrial DNA as a marker for treatment-response in post-traumatic stress disorder.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a serious mental health condition thought to be mediated by a dysregulated stress response system. Stress, especially chronic stress, affects mitochondrial activity and their efficiency in duplicating their genomes. Human cells contain numerous mitochondria that harbor multiple copies of their own genome, which consist of a mixture of wild type and variant mtDNA - a condition known as mitochondrial heteroplasmy. Number of mitochondrial genomes in a cell and the degree of heteroplasmy may serve as an indicator of mitochondrial allostatic load. Changes in

Visual phenomenology in schizophrenia and post-traumatic stress disorder: an exploratory study.

BACKGROUND: Visual experiences such as hallucinations are commonly reported by people with psychosis, psychological trauma and dissociative states, although questions remain about their similarities and differences. For diagnostic and therapeutic purposes, clinical research must better delineate and compare the characteristics of these experiences in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and in schizophrenia. AIMS: To compare visual phenomena and dissociation in participants with a primary psychotic illness and those with a trauma diagnosis. METHOD: A quantitative group design study comparin

Mini-review: A possible role for galanin in post-traumatic stress disorder.

Several neuroendocrine systems have been implicated in post-traumatic stress disorder, including the mesocortical and mesolimbic dopamine, the norepinephrine, the β-endorphin, the serotonin, and the oxytocin systems. The interaction between these different systems remains, however, largely unknown and a generally accepted unifying theory is thus far lacking. In this review, we suggest that galanergic suppression of dopaminergic neurons in the ventral tegmental may constitute the missing link in a post-traumatic feedback loop. In addition, we address the literature on the negative cross-antagon
