Slow speech rate effects on stuttering preschoolers with disordered phonology.

To study the effects of clinicians' slow rate on the speech of children who stutter with and without a concomitant phonological disorder, an A-B-A-B single case design was used with six clinician-child dyads, where B = Clinician's slow speech rate model. Two boys and one girl, aged 49-54 months, stuttering with disordered phonology (S + DP), were compared to three boys aged 42-50 months, stuttering with normal phonology (S + NP). Articulation rates were measured in phones per second (pps) in clinician-child adjacent utterance pairs. The S + NP dyads showed improved fluency in the B condition t…

Stuttering in school-age children: a comprehensive approach to treatment.

PURPOSE: This letter, prepared through a close collaboration between the authors and more than 100 colleagues, responds to a paper by the editor of Language, Speech, and Hearing Services in Schools that highlighted the need for research on treatment for stuttering in school-age children. METHOD: Our response addresses 3 themes: First, we offer agreement with the editor's call for research because more evidence about treatment for children who stutter is certainly needed. Second, we provide an overview of recent literature, demonstrating that the majority of current treatments include strategi…

[Systematic review of delayed auditory feedback effectiveness for stuttering reduction].

PURPOSE: To perform a systematic review of studies related to the effects of delayed auditory feedback on speech fluency in individuals who … SULTS: The results indicated that the use of altered auditory feedback devices for the reduction of stuttering events still do not have robust support for their applicability. Methodological variability does not allow a consistent answer, or a trend about the effectiveness of the device, to be drawn. CONCLUSION: Although the limitations in the studies preve …

[Reduction of stuttering through bronchodilatation with beta2 sympathomimetic drug formoterol].

BACKGROUND: About 60 millions of people on the planet suffer from stuttering. Speech fluency disorder caused by stuttering (F98.5) was known already in the ancient civilizations of Egypt, Mesopotamia and China 7000 years ago (1). Despite of this the aetiology of stuttering has remained unknown and its causal treatment has not been possible. METHODS AND RESULTS: According to ICD-CD, 10th revision (2) ICD-10, stuttering belongs to "Other behavioral disorders including emotional ones with their beginning in childhood and adolescence" (F98) and it is related to Chapter V "Mental and behavioral di…

Speech effort measurement and stuttering: investigating the chorus reading effect.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate chorus reading's (CR's) effect on speech effort during oral reading by adult stuttering speakers and control participants. The effect of a speech effort measurement highlighting strategy was also investigated. METHOD: Twelve persistent stuttering (PS) adults and 12 normally fluent control participants completed 1-min base rate readings (BR-nonchorus) and CRs within a BR/CR/BR/CR/BR experimental design. Participants self-rated speech effort using a 9-point scale after each reading trial. Stuttering frequency, speech rate, and speech natural…

Developing intervention programs for children with stuttering and concomitant impairments.

School-aged children who stutter often present concomitant impairments in articulation and language that can complicate treatment. In this article, a framework is offered for designing intervention programs for such children. It is stressed that clinicians must first identify clinical priorities by determining the severity of the impairments, their impact on daily activities, others' reactions to the impairments, and the likelihood of unassisted recovery. Several potential treatment models are presented, as are general treatment principles and specific treatment strategies for three profiles o

Psychological impact of the Lidcombe Program of early stuttering intervention.

The Lidcombe Program is an operant treatment for stuttering in preschool children for which favourable outcome and social validity data have been published. The treatment involves parental praise for stutter-free speech in children's everyday speaking environments, and occasional correction of stuttered speech. Theoretical perspectives on the origins of stuttering have prompted suggestions that the Lidcombe Program may have an adverse psychological impact on children. The present preliminary investigation sought to identify any evidence of such a systematic, pernicious trend, which might justi…

Outcome measurement in adult stuttering therapy: a self-rating profile.

The speech and language therapy profession is committed to the use of outcome measurement to maximise both efficiency and efficacy. However, measuring change in adult stuttering therapy is particularly problematic. It is proposed that outcomes of therapy should include stuttering behaviours, reactions to stuttering and handicap resulting from stuttering. Current methods of measuring change are reviewed. The Wright & Ayre Stuttering Self-Rating Profile (WASSP) is described which includes clients' perceptions of stuttering behaviours, avoidance, feelings and disadvantage. Issues of reliability a…

Effect of frequency altered feedback and audience size on stuttering.

The effect of frequency altered feedback (FAF) and audience size on stuttering frequency was examined. Nine adults who stutter orally read to audiences of two, four and 15 people under conditions of FAF (one-half octave shift down) and non-altered auditory feedback (NAF). There was no statistically significant effect of audience size on stuttering frequency (p > 0.05). A statistically significant reduction in stuttering frequency was found under FAF relative to NAF (p < 0.5). Collapsed across audience conditions, stuttering frequency was reduced by 74%. These findings suggest that FAF may be u…

Modifying electroglottograph-identified intervals of phonation: the effect on stuttering.

Single-subject experiments were conducted with an adolescent and an adult male who stutter to assess the effect on stuttering of changing the frequency of phonation intervals that were within prescribed duration ranges during spontaneous speech. Electroglottograph-identified intervals of phonation were measured using a computer-assisted biofeedback system. Both subjects demonstrated that their stuttering could be controlled by modifying the frequency of phonation intervals within short duration ranges. The experimental effects not only replicated earlier findings but were demonstrated to be in…

Letter to the Editor: Clarifying neurodiversity-affirming frameworks in stuttering.

This letter responds to recent characterizations of neurodiversity-affirming and anti-ableist frameworks in stuttering in Vanryckeghem's (2026) position paper. We argue that these frameworks do not reject speech-related goals, intervention, or evidence-based practice. Rather, they question whether apparent fluency should function as the default marker of therapeutic success and emphasize outcomes such as participation, communicative agency, identity, and wellbeing. We also distinguish client-defined speech change from compulsory normalization and call for greater precision in representing neur…

Speech-Induced Myoclonus-Dystonia Mimicking Stuttering and Responding to Zonisamide.

We present the case of a child with myoclonus-dystonia (MD) who was mistaken for having stuttering and responded to oral zonisamide therapy. An 11-year-old boy presented with a 3-month history of speech-induced myoclonus, dystonia, and speech disfluency, with a positive family history in his father. A final diagnosis of MD was made, and the child responded to zonisamide. MD is a treatable form of neurogenic stuttering. It may mimic stuttering, and detailed analysis of the phenomenology and the evaluation of family history may help establish the diagnosis. A trial of zonisamide may be considere…

A pilot study of stuttering treatment for older children (STOC).

PURPOSE: This pilot study explored an operant treatment for school-age children, Stuttering Treatment for Older Children (STOC), in increasing quality of life and the fluency of school-aged children who stutter. METHOD: The participants were seven children 9-13 years old. A single-case experimental design using multiple baselines was utilized, with participants randomly assigned to baselines of different lengths. STOC is a home-based treatment program that combined time-out with a specific performance-based criteria. Recordings of children's speech were collected routinely as monthly samples …

Pharmacological and dietary treatments for developmental stuttering: A systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Pharmacological and dietary treatments are increasingly investigated as alternatives or adjuncts to behavioural therapy for developmental stuttering. However, their relative efficacy, acceptability, tolerability and safety remain unclear. This systematic review evaluated the evidence for these treatments. METHODS: We searched CENTRAL, MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane and other databases from inception to June 2024 for studies examining pharmacological or dietary treatments for developmental stuttering. We did not limit studies by design. Primary outcomes included clinician-rated and se…
