Heat waves reveal additive genetic effects leading to sunburn resilience of grapevine berries.

Grape sunburn is an abiotic stress response induced under heat wave conditions. Heat stress is reaching new dimensions in terms of intensity and frequency in European cool-climate wine-growing regions. The damage to grape berries manifests in browning and shriveling, leading to yield loss and can reduce wine quality. Established management strategies like defoliation of the cluster zone in order to reduce fungal infection pressure could enhance this problem. Climate-adapted cultivars that are resilient to sunburn would resolve those trade-offs in vineyard management. In recent years, grapes gr…

Physiological adjustment of pomegranate pericarp responding to sunburn and its underlying molecular mechanisms.

BACKGROUND: Sunburn is common in pomegranate, and sunburned fruits have poor appearance and low marketability. However, the physiological and metabolic responses to sunburn and their underlying molecular mechanisms in pomegranate fruit are little understood. Fruit of sunburn-sensitive cultivar 'Hongyushizi' was used to carry out physiological parameter detection and widely-targeted metabolomics and transcriptome study. RESULTS: Malondialdehyde and relative conductivity increased with the severity of sunburn, which indicated increased membrane injury. Meanwhile, the content of antioxidants (to…

Secondary Metabolites Coordinately Protect Grapes from Excessive Light and Sunburn Damage during Development.

Sunburn is a physiological disorder that reduces grape quality and vineyard yield. It is the result of excessive sunlight and high temperatures. As climate change continues to increase air temperatures, reports of sunburn damage in vineyards worldwide are becoming more frequent. Grapes produce secondary metabolites (carotenoids, polyphenols and aroma compounds) to counter photooxidative stress and acclimate to higher radiation environments. This study evaluated changes in these compounds in during ripening when grapes were exposed post-flowering (ED) and at véraison (LD), and compared them to …

Consistency of reported tanning behaviors and sunburn history among sorority and fraternity students.

BACKGROUND: Reliable measurements of behavior are crucial to evaluating health promotion efforts. The goal of this reliability study was to examine the consistency of recalled tanning behaviors in a population with a potentially high use. METHODS: We used the test-retest reliability of a self-administered survey to examine the consistency of reporting behavior patterns regarding artificial ultraviolet (UV) tanning, sunburns and sun sensitivity among sorority- and fraternity-affiliated university students. RESULTS: High reliability on test-retest for questions evaluating the number of artific…

Polymorphisms in XPD (Asp312Asn and Lys751Gln) genes, sunburn and arsenic-related skin lesions.

BACKGROUND: Single-nucleotide polymorphisms in genes related to DNA repair capacity and ultraviolet exposure have not been well investigated in relation to skin lesions associated with arsenic exposure. This population based case-control study, of 600 cases and 600 controls, frequency matched on age and gender in Pabna, Bangladesh, in 2001-2002, investigated the association and potential effect modification between polymorphisms in Xeroderma Pigmentosum complementation group D (XPD) (Lys751Gln and Asp312Asn) genes, tendency to sunburn and arsenic-related skin lesions. METHODS: Unconditional l…

Relationship between p53 codon 72 polymorphism and susceptibility to sunburn and skin cancer.

Upregulation of p53 protein induces either growth arrest or apoptosis in response to cellular injury This is signaled from a highly conserve … lic forms of p53 and nonmelanoma skin cancer, by determining the correlation with susceptibility to sunburn, which is a known risk factor, and then by p53 sequence analysis of a large series of tumors. We found a significant positive association between p53-72R and susceptibility to sunburn, as assessed by skin phototype and minimal erythemal dose followi …

Miniature swine as an animal model in photodermatology: factors influencing sunburn cell formation.

Swine have played an important role as animal models in dermatological research. In order to evaluate the usefulness of pig skin in photodermatology, sunburn cell (SBC) formation in the epidermis of miniature swine and erythema production were studied. SBCs were readily formed in the epidermis of the swine by ultraviolet radiation. Suberythemal doses of broad-band UVB radiation were effective in producing SBCs, and there was a dose-response relationship between SBC formation and ultraviolet radiation. When SBC formation was related to ultraviolet radiation in terms of biological dose (i.e. min…

Statistical study of individual variations in sunburn sensitivity in 303 volunteers without photodermatosis.

Variations in individual sunburn sensitivity have been studied using erythema as the photobiologic criterion. The minimal erythema dose (MED), the minimal dose necessary to elicit an intense erythema (MED++), and an edema (MOD), were determined by Saidman's method. The irradiation was performed with a 2,500-W xenon arc solar simulator fitted with a water filter and WG 305 Schott filter. The high correlation between MED, MED++, and MOD and the existence of saturation phenomenon confirm that determination of MED is the best photobiologic criterion. The average MED and the pathologic threshold fo…

Using Social Media to Determine the Affective and Cognitive Components of Tweets about Sunburn.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between social media usage and the public's expressions of sunburn remains unexplored. This study is a content analysis of Twitter that was performed to identify the public's expressions, perceptions, and attitudes towards sunburn. METHODS: Qualitative content analysis was conducted on tweets by Australian Twitter users during January 2007 and January 2016. Out of 2,000 tweets available, in-depth content analysis of 200 random tweets was performed. RESULTS: Tweets in this study were categorised into 10 distinct themes, three of which were cognitive (fact based) a…

Pharmacologic induction of epidermal melanin and protection against sunburn in a humanized mouse model.

Fairness of skin, UV sensitivity and skin cancer risk all correlate with the physiologic function of the melanocortin 1 receptor, a Gs-coupled signaling protein found on the surface of melanocytes. Mc1r stimulates adenylyl cyclase and cAMP production which, in turn, up-regulates melanocytic production of melanin in the skin. In order to study the mechanisms by which Mc1r signaling protects the skin against UV injury, this study relies on a mouse model with "humanized skin" based on epidermal expression of stem cell factor (Scf). K14-Scf transgenic mice retain melanocytes in the epidermis and t

Sunburns and risk of cutaneous melanoma: does age matter? A comprehensive meta-analysis.

PURPOSE: Sunburns are an important risk factor for melanoma and those occurring in childhood are often cited as posing the greatest risk. We conducted a meta-analysis to quantify the magnitude of association for melanoma and sunburns during childhood, adolescence, adulthood and over a lifetime. METHODS: After reviewing over 1300 article titles and evaluating 270 articles in detail, we pooled odds ratios from 51 independent study populations for "ever" sunburned and risk of cutaneous melanoma. Among these, 26 studies reported results from dose-response analyses. Dose-response analyses were exa…
